Chapter Thirty-Five
Christmas 1992, Richard's family headed to New Haven to spend it with Agnes and Bernice. Karen and Jon and their 4 children headed to Saskatchewan where Jon's parents lived. They flew to the city of Regina, the capital city of Saskatchewan. The city was very pleasant and they enjoyed the sights for the 2 days they spent there. They visited Wascana Park, saw a show at the Centre of the Arts, did some shopping, and visited other landmarks there, while visiting with Jon's sister's family.
Catharine and her husband Derrick Landon had 4 children: One boy Keith, and 3 Girls Kristi, Dora and Dahlia. They lived in the South part of Regina in a nice size, 6 bedroom home. Karen really enjoyed the privacy and normalcy here in Canada, especially in prairie land such as Saskatchewan. The older cousins loved taking care of Uncle Jon and Auntie Karen's children, and the parents didn't mind. It gave them a chance to visit with one another.
The one thing that Karen noticed, was that the oldest girl Kristi, who was 14 was thin, and seemed to not join the rest of the family for mealtimes, making up excuses. Karen looked around and noticed that no one seemed to think anything was out of the ordinary.
Later on, when Karen and Jon were laying in bed, talking the day's events over, Karen brought it up, "Jon, didn't you notice that Kristi didn't eat anything today? Don't you find that strange?" asked Karen, looking all concerned.
"Karen. It was nothing…really? You know how girls have to be thin and all that. She probably just wasn't hungry," explained Jonathon, who was trying to get through the latest John Saul novel.
"I know, but I am worried. She looks really thin. She wears baggy clothes to hide her appearance. She must weigh only 105 pounds and she is about 5 feet 6 inches tall. Something doesn't seem right," said Karen. "I wonder if I should bring it up with Catharine? Do you think she would mind?"
"I don't know…I think you might be wrong. Maybe she is just naturally thin. Maybe don't say anything yet. Wait until we head out to Mom and Dad's and if something is wrong, then maybe…but until then, let's just keep still, okay?" said Jon, in a matter of fact voice.
Karen leaned over to kiss her husband, and pretty soon Jon forgot about the book. It fell to the floor, but no one seemed to notice or care. They snuggled under the covers, with Karen giggling, and protesting, "Stop Jonathon! The baby is going to wake up!" Unbeknownst to them, their daughter was awake, but laying there looking up at the patterns of the ceiling.
The next morning, they all packed including Catharine's family, and they drove the 3 hours away to Swift Current where the farm was located south of the small city of 17,000. Karen and Jon had borrowed his sister's vehicle, as they had 2 vehicles. The drive was pleasant, and Karen marveled at the flatness and vastness of the Prairie Province. They drove through the city, which seemed like a nice place to raise a family, Karen thought as they drove and stopped for a bite at a local restaurant. KFC. Everyone seemed to favor the taste of good old fashioned chicken.
