Chapter Thirty Eight
The next few days were busy spent preparing for Christmas, and it wasn't easy, as there was always kids running here and there, getting into everything. The 2 oldest of Karen's were 2 prime examples. She just laughed at them, and let them have their fun while it lasted. Normally she was sort of stricter with them, but at Christmas, they could commit any sin, and she was more than forgiving. In that way she was a bit different than the way her parents raised her. It wasn't easy though. There were times, when Karen would almost lose her cool, and Jon had to take over. She knew that she wasn't a perfect parent, but she always tried to be the kind of mother that her kids could come to her with any problem and try to be as understanding as possible.
Karen had a feeling that she would be blessed with another child. Her period hadn't arrived for many weeks now, and she could tell by the telltale signs by now. She knew that after this, she would definitely have the operation to make sure she couldn't have any more kids. If it were up to her, she would have more and more, but she knew that there would be a limit. She wasn't getting any younger. A thrill went up inside of her being. She was nurturing a tiny life within her. One of the greatest gifts that could befall a woman.
Karen still phoned her mother Agnes every other night, and they would chat for as long as time would permit. It amazed her, at how her mother was now so mellow, someone whom she could really talk to, and even confide in. The best part was when she wanted to talk to her grandchildren on the phone, and the kids loved to talk to their grandma. They would talk about their boo-boos, or if someone hurt them, or whatever, and Agnes loved every minute of their tale. And it was a bit surprising that Karen could not wait to get back to California and visit with her mother. Times sure had changed, and Agnes loved the kids with a new passion.
Karen told Jon that they would be expecting again, and he cried tears of joy. He was so excited that he lifted her up and kissed her passionately. He then laid her on the bed, and began to be tender with her, showing her how much he cared and loved her, the mother of his children. Karen began to weep in happiness, as he began to touch her, in ways that made her love for him deepen and deepen further. She allowed herself to open herself emotionally and lovingly for him, as they were lost in time.
The next day, Christmas day, they told everyone the good news, and found out that Jon's sister Melisa was expecting, so that was exciting. Karen loved to see the excitement on her children's faces when they opened their Christmas presents. Karen received a diamond bracelet, necklace and earrings, which made her so happy, but she softly scolded Jon, saying, "You shouldn' t have spent so much on me…you know better!" but she rewarded him with a kiss, which made everyone laugh. It thrilled her to no end, that despite the fact he was not a rich world celebrity, with his business, he could still provide for her. Not that she needed a diamond bracelot, but it was the thought that counted and which touced her deeply.
The next few days were spent visiting with one another, as there was a lot of catching up to do. Karen loved the fact, that here, she was another member of the family. There was nothing special about her. So what if she happened to sell millions of hit records? She wanted to share in their joys, their sadness, their feelings, just as she wanted them to treat her accordingly. And to the little nephews and nieces…why, they didn't care that she was "THE" Karen Carpenter… to them, she was just Auntie Karen, and she loved the sound of their voices calling to her, "Look here Auntie Karen! You're not watching!" It made her feel all warm all over. Sadly, though, everything came to an end, and it was time to head back to Regina. That was not easy to do. The kids were very sad, and lots of tears were shed, but with promises of a get together in the works, the tears soon dissolved.
