Chapter Thirty-Three
Karen had been nominated for 4 Grammy Awards and for 3 diverse fields: Gospel, Pop and Country. She showed up at the ceremony wearing a blue suede mini-skirt, with a silver chain wrapped around her waist as a belt. She wore a white sheer blouse, which was quite daring in that it showed her ample figure(having 3 children helped with that). She wore white leather boots. She wore a blue suede vest over her blouse. She looked quite sexy even for being almost 42 in a short couple of weeks. Whistles and cat calls came from her at every angle, when she walked down the red carpeting towards the inside of the huge Auditorium. Karen walked away with a Grammy win for BEST POP/ROCK FEMALE PERFORMANCE for WHAT LOVE IS. She won the Grammy for BEST COUNTRY PERFORMANCE-FEMALE for WAITING ALL NIGHT LONG FOR YOU. Richard also won a Grammy for BEST POP/ROCK PERFORMANCE BY A MALE, and BEST ARRANGEMENT for THE RIGHT TIME TO FALL IN LOVE.
Karen and Jonathon drove all the way to Maryland, where their former friends James and Rose Allen and their brood of 5 children lived. The drive was a new experience to the parents as they had 3 very young children in the car but they managed. They took a longer time to get there, but they also had more time to relax. Finally they got there, and were very well received by the Allen family.
By this time, Karen was really starting to show in the advanced stages of pregnancy. Jon wouldn't let her pick up anything heavy or do anything strenuous. He was such a dear, she thought to herself, as she walked up to the house. Finally they got all settled and the kids were all outside playing except Steven who was taking a much-needed nap. Actually, Karen felt that she could use a nap, but declined instead, and spent a few hours visiting with Rose. They talked, laughed, confessed, shared and even disagreed on different things, but they enjoyed each other's company. Karen really enjoyed herself, just relaxing, without a care in the world. Pretty soon they would have to get supper ready, as the kids kept on coming inside wanting something to eat. Rose's older children watched Karen's younger children, who were playing with Rose's younger children around the same age.
After the supper, it was time to put the younger children to bed. The 2 couples sat in the living room, and just shared about what had happened in their lives in the last while. They drank coffee, and ate some desserts, while sharing. Karen snuggled closer to Jon, as they sat on the same loveseat. Finally it was time to go to bed. They knew that they needed some sleep, as the children were apt to rise early. So they were shown their quarters for the next week, and the room was very comfortable.
Their visit proved to be rewarding. Karen and Jon felt so good, so well rested, and so much still in love. They really treasured their friendship with Rose and James, and the next time, they would be the ones to come and visit Karen and Jon's home. Their trailer was loaded with goodies from Rose, and Karen gave a few treasured momentos from her career to Rose. She also gave each of the kids an autographed picture of her and Richard. The kids were very excited especially the teenaged Karen.
They drove thru parts of Canada and enjoyed the friendly and hospitable Canadian people. The drive thru it was nice, and they drove on the Number One highway from Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and finally British Columbia where they headed south to California.
The Carpenters Greatest Hits collection was released in a 6 CD Box Set, which featured an extensive beautiful booklet. The box set also featured 14 selections which had never been released before and some of these songs were THE WAY WE WERE, SUNRISE SUNSET, MY WAY, COPA COPACABANA, and IT'S MY TURN. These selections had been recorded during their long, and stunningly successful career.
The single IT'S MY TURN featured production by Richard, and was actually a solo song from Karen. So the single was released and was a top 20 hit peaking at #14. Richard's solo single, WISHING YOU WERE MINE hit the Top 10 at # 6. On the A.C. Chart it hit # 1 for 6 weeks. His album was now triple platinum, and he went overseas to continue promoting it in Japan and England. Worldwide, it had sold over 7 million copies.
Karen was back in the recording studio for a month laying down dozens of tracks for future albums. She recorded enough material for about 3 albums, and some. She loved singing, and also did some percussion work as well.
