Chapter Thirty-Four
July 24th, 1992 little 7 pounder and 3 ounces Cynthia Bernice Karen was added to the family. She had light colored hair and blue eyes. She looked very much like her father, but had her mother's nose and mouth. She was a very quiet baby, and out of all them, Karen reflected that Cynthia was the best. She just slept and kept unusually quiet. All the other kids would come around and take peeks at their new little baby sister.
Daniel was now almost 3 and he had such an innocent disposition, that he could get away with his antics. Karen and Jon had to keep a close eye on him as he would tease and torment the younger siblings. He didn't seem very fond of his little brother and baby sister. He only put up with Lindsay because she worshiped the ground that he walked on. She looked up to her big brother, and in her eyes, he could do no wrong. Lindsay liked being around her 2 younger siblings, and she would play with them, and try to talk to them in her childish language.
Karen was planning to head back to A&M Records and under the direction of a new producer, she was planning to record another album. The producer was world renowned David Foster who had won many Grammys for his work. His clients were Anne Murray, Celine Dion, Barbra Streisand, among many other musical celebrities. She had been a little apprehensive at first, because the 2 major producers of her life had been Richard and Phil. But she knew now that she was ready to spread her wings and fly.
She took Cynthia with her into the studio, and Cynthia was as quiet as a mouse, so no one need to have worried about anything. Most of the time Cynthia was sleeping, and when she awoke, Karen fed her in the privacy of Karen's office.
Karen liked David, who made her feel at ease. David had always wanted to work with Karen before, but the chance had never come up before. Now he jumped at the chance, and like everyone else, was amazed at how well she was in the recording studio. Out of the hundreds of stars he had produced for, he was stunned to realize that she knew what she was doing, had a good ear, superb rhythm, excellent productions skills, song-writing abilities, had a knowledgeable understanding of the various instruments, and knew how to use her incredible vocals which amazed him, at how incredible they sounded.
Karen recorded about 16 selections, and 6 of these were her own compositions. 2 were from Richard and John Bettis, and the rest were from various songwriters. All of these songs were unknown, and had never been recorded by anyone else. Karen's hair was really short, almost like a pixie style, which framed her face. It was now a very light brown with blond streaks in it, and it looked fabulous on her. She had some wrinkles on her face, but she still looked sensational, and her smile was beaming wide. During the photo sessions, Karen wanted one thing. To look as normal as possible, without looking glamorous or trendy. She wanted the photos to display who she really was. She didn't want herself to be airbrushed. She wanted everyone to see what she really looked like, with minimal makeup, and this was usually the way she looked on a day to day basis. Karen finally decided on a photo of her wearing a long billowy skirt and a blouse overtop of it. She wore a belt around her waist. She looked as natural as possible, as she leaned against a tree, with a flower garden behind her.
The album title was SIMPLY KAREN. The debut single was released October 22, 1992 and the song was WHAT CAN I SAY TO MAKE YOU MINE? It debuted at # 37 and peaked at # 2, selling 2.1 million copies.
