Chapter 31
September 1, 1990 Karen gave birth to a beautiful daughter, which she named Lindsay Aurora Traci, who weighed in at 7 pounds and 6 ounces. She had dark hair, and big, brown eyes.
Agnes almost gasped in disbelief, at how much little Lindsay looked as Karen had looked as a baby. Karen just loved her little daughter and couldn't believe the little female miracle that lay before her. That God would grant her this chance to mother this beautiful but fragile creature.
Jonathon was so happy, and little Daniel didn't really understand what the fuss was about. He was too young, but no one forgot about him. He still received his ample share of attention from Gramma and all the relatives.
Now there were 2 cribs in the Nursery, and Daniel was already crawling around everything, and getting his hands on everything. He had to be watched at every moment, as he got into everything. Karen was always tired, but in a good way. She wouldn't trade this kind of being tired for anything else in the world. It was her job as a mother. Jonathon seemed very content, with his family, and helped Karen in anyway possible. He truly was still the man of her dreams, and her love deepened for him. Her heart was overflowing with gratitude for him.
She also heard thru the grapevine, that Tom and his wife had 2 kids. Karen was extremely happy for them.
Christmas 1990 was coming up, and with the happy festive season arriving, it was joined with the thought that their beloved father Harold would not be there. Less than a year since he had died, and how much they all missed him. No words could be put into thought at how much he had meant to every one of them.
Agnes now spent a lot of time with her 5 grandchildren, and focused on them. It temporarily took away the loss that she was still experiencing, although when Agnes was alone at night it was especially hard.
Karen and Jonathon and their 2 children headed over to Richard and Mary's home to celebrate Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, along with Mom Carpenter. It was a quiet Christmas with Mary's family as well, and a feeling of missing someone was in the air. They tried to keep busy for the children's sake, and for Agnes, but it wasn't easy. When the day was over, a feeling of relief came over everyone. Now they could try to get on with their lives, in their own, special way.
January 1991, Karen found out that she was expecting again, as was Mary, so this news overjoyed Agnes, who now lived for her children.
Karen and Jonathon knew that they would have to find a place soon for them to move to. Karen wanted to move near Connecticut, while Jonathon opted for Canada. Many nights were spent going over maps and brochures. Finally they settled for outside of Los Angeles about 2 hours south. They had looked at some property and some houses, and the final decision was to be as close to L.A. as possible, close to Richard, Agnes, and her show business career. Jonathon had a hefty bank account, and could retire if he wanted to. He had worked for so many years, and now needed a break, and so he decided to take care of the kids whenever Karen was involved in her career.
Karen was now involved in television, having starred in several television sit-coms and dramas. So this new part of her career was providing her with a new fan base, apart from her musical platform.
Karen's duet with Sandi Patti on the Christian Contemporary Charts was a bonafide hit, striking the number one spot for 9 weeks. The song was JESUS LORD TO ME, and was a beautiful song with 2 of the richest vocals in music. They received rave reviews, and on the Billboard Charts it hit # 78 and finally settled at # 17 on the Pop Charts. By now the Gospel album was now at quadruple platinum, and the Dove Nominations came in. Karen was nominated for 6 Dove Awards.
Karen re-recorded the single Jambalaya (On the Bayou) for her Country album, and hit the top spot for 2 weeks, and stayed in the Top 10 for 22 weeks. On the Billboard Chart, it hit # 3 for 5 weeks and sold 2.4 million copies. It was certified platinum single status.
Another Carpenters single was making headway for the top at # 3. The single REMEMBER WHEN was already in the gold single range, and had a hard time hitting the top, as the Top 2 songs would not budge from their position, until Karen and Richard headed on the TONIGHT SHOW and the following week, stayed at # 1 for 4 weeks, now selling over 2.7 million copies. It stayed in the Top 10 for another 13 weeks. On the Adult Contemporary Chart it was # 1 for 10 weeks.
The Grammy Award Show came up and between her and Richard, they were nominated for several awards and it was neat that Karen was nominated in the Country, Gospel and Pop music fields.
Karen showed up wearing a white floor length gown, with great simplicity, yet very elegant. Her long hair was straight in the back, meeting her waist, while some of the hair was curled and pinned atop her head, with jewels holding it in place. Karen wore a diamond necklace, which was a second year anniversary gift from Jonathon. Karen's gown had flower patterns over it, with diamonds and rare stones attached to it. The dress was worth over 6 figures and was on loan from a very upscale store.
