Chapter 29
February rolled around and Karen and Jonathon decided to go on a vacation for their 1st year anniversary. Richard and Mary would look after Daniel while they were gone for 10 days. They knew that with another baby coming, they wouldn't have very much time to spend quality time together, and so they made the decision to go on the trip. They still hadn't used the cruise gift that Harold and Agnes had given to them over a year ago, and so thought this would be very special in memory of their father.
Karen wouldn't be attending this years Grammy Awards as she would be away. On her last solo album, A&M Records had released the song DREAMING ALWAYS OF YOU in September, and although it didn't hit the top spot it settled at # 3 and sold 2.4 million copies as it stayed in the Top 5 for 16 weeks. It hit # 1 on the A.C. chart for 5 weeks. This would be nominated for SONG OF THE YEAR and BEST POP/ROCK FEMALE PERFORMANCE. She didn't think that she had a chance in winning this year.
She and Richard were nominated for 4 Grammys as the Carpenters. Karen and Jonathon were all packed, and they said their good-byes to everyone. Karen didn't want to leave her son, but she was knew that Daniel would be in good hands with his cousins and Uncle Richard and Auntie Mary. She was actually looking forward to getting away. Spending time with her husband, and meeting other couples, and just a chance to unwind. She would be away from any pressures, and with her Dad passing away, she needed to get away and just think over everything that had happened to her recently. With Jon beside her, she knew that she would have a great time. He needed a wife, a friend and a lover, and he would get all that plus more.
They left on the 15th of February, 1990 and boarded the cruise ship. It was huge, and very luxurious. Harold and Agnes had booked first class accomodations for Karen and Jonathon, and they were quite impressed. The room was a nice size, and decorated quite tastefully. The bathroom was elegant, with shiny brass knobs on all the handles. Fluffy towels were neatly hanging on the brass racks, and the mirror was huge, extending from the floor to the ceiling.
When the dinner rolled around, they were escorted into a beautiful, spacious room with chandeliers of crystal, and wallpaper with brocade patterns all over it. They were seated at a table for 4, and met the other couple that they would be sharing with. After introductions were made, everyone seated themselves and began to make small talk.
The other couple's names were James and Rose Allen, and they were in their mid-thirties. James was about 5 ft 10 and Rose was a petite 5 ft. Rose and Karen started chatting, and Karen found out that Rose was the mother of 5 children. Karen gasped in disbelief, as she saw the good shape of Rose, who looked as if she had never bore any children at all. Karen found out that the second oldest daughter was named Karen Anne, after Karen Carpenter. Karen was quite flattered, and promised to send the 15 year old daughter an autograph and letter.
The meal was nice, and Karen ate until she was full, and then declined any dessert. She didn't want to overdo it, and then get all worried about her weight. She hadn't had any problems with weight, just the fact that having Daniel meant that her stomach was not as flat and firm as it had been before, and she didn't want to gain any unnecessary weight, if she didn't have to.
Rose glanced at Karen, and Karen knew what the other was thinking, that Karen was still anorexic. That was the problem of being in the public eye, was that she was always under scrutiny. Karen weighed 105 pounds, and had lost some weight, but that was more than likely due to the fact that her beloved father had just passed away. It hadn't been easy. She still was under the grieving stages, and she missed her father every passing day. She had wanted her children to know their grandfather. Well, if there was one consolation, well it was that before his death, they had had family portraits taken, and Karen had one for her livingroom, of Dad holding his little Daniel.
There was a dance later on, and Karen and Jonathon danced in each other's arms. Karen loved to be in his arms, and he loved to hold her. She was actually quite a good dancer, and her body was very fluid, very much like a dancer.
Afterwards they went on the deck, and looked at the night sky and talked about the recent happenings in their lives. They wondered how Daniel was making out. They knew that Bernice was taking care of Agnes and that the 2 sisters had done some bonding.
They talked of their upcoming arrival, and plans that went with that. Finally they headed back inside. The cruise was so much what they needed, and more than what they expected. Everything about it was very classy, and well staffed with people who truly loved their jobs. Karen knew that she would be recommending the cruise line to her friends.
The days passed so quickly, and it was time to leave. Karen and Jon exchanged addresses with their new found friends, and plans were made for a get together sometime down the line.
They arrived back in L.A. after catching a plane home, and headed straight to Richard and Mary's. Little Daniel, who was over 4 months old, saw them and seemed to be so happy. Karen immediately rushed over and gave him a big kiss and lots of hugs. Oh how she had missed him! Jonathon came over and did likewise, as well. He had grown in that 10 days, and Karen could definitely tell. Richard and Mary had enjoyed taking care of him, and said that the kids loved him a lot. Karen was very pleased at this. Daniel liked playing with his female cousin Mindi Karen, and she was about 5 months older than him.
