Chapter 27
Christmas 1989 was fast approaching and this was to be one special Christmas. Once again, Karen's home was to be the center of activity. Karen's in-laws would be coming in from Canada, and they were thrilled to finally come and see the new baby Daniel.
The Carpenters' newest Christmas album was released and with great publicity. The album was titled A NEW SEASON TO LOVE and debuted in the top ten chart at # 7 going gold the first week. Karen had written this song by herself during the summer months and she loved it as much as she loved her baby. The lyrics were so poignant…
So much sadness in the world today
Everyone has a reason to hate
Blaming this and that
Ignoring those in need
Christmas years have come and gone
And yet nothing's really changed
The holiday lasts just a few short weeks
Then it's gone from our hearts
Let's sing a song
A song to rekindle
Like a candle all alone
Waiting to be lit
Let's sing a song
A song of warmth
And pray for something
A new season to love
Speaking words of love to everyone
Helping hands heal all heartache
Giving of yourself fully
Fills the emptiness inside
Christmas should be everyday
In our cold and dampened hearts
So let's open ourselves to others
And find such joy and laughter
The single A NEW SEASON TO LOVE tore to # 1 in it's 3rd week on the charts, and was the first Christmas single to hit # 1 on the Top 100. It was certified as a gold single and stayed at # 1 for 3 weeks, and on the Adult Contemporary Chart it settled at # 1 for 10 weeks. The Christmas album, by December 25th, was now platinum.
Christmas 1989 was lovely and special. The 4 Carpenter grandchildren were the center of attention, as well as Jon's numerous nephews and nieces.
The room was piled so high with gifts. Red, green, blue, pink, white, purple, gold, yellow, orange colored presents with beautiful ribbons and bows added to the already colorful room.
It was especially fun to have a songfest around the Grand Piano, with Richard playing and everyone gathered around. Every imaginable Christmas song was played, and they went at this for hours, while the kids ran around the room, chasing each other, and playing games that kids usually play.
The crowning moment came when Karen sat at the piano and began to sing and play the song she had composed A NEW SEASON TO LOVE. She knew how to play the piano, though not as good as Richard, but she could manage. This song gave her so much hope in the world, as she glanced at her husband holding their precious son. It was easy to lose hope in the world, and lose perspective of things that were important to her.
