Chapter Twenty-Four
Karen had a dress designed for her, and it was spectacular to say the least. It had spaghetti straps and the gown flared out below her chest. It was white at the top, and red on the botton. Sparkles of red were on the top part, and white sparkles on the red part. She wore the jewelry that her in laws had given to her, and her hair was long in the back with spiral curls held in place with a red and white barette. She completed the outfit with white heels and a wrap around shawl. She looked great as usual, and received a lot of attention, and no doubt would make it on the BEST DRESSED lists. In the last few years, her fashion sense improved greatly. Jonathon wore a red suit, with a white shirt, and a vest with white sparkles on it.
Together they made a wonderful couple, and were the envy of all those at the Award show. Karen held tightly on to his arm as they made their entrance. Karen's 2 songs BEAUTIFUL and SOMEWHERE OVER THE RAINBOW were nominated for Grammy Awards. Both of these songs were nominated for SONG OF THE YEAR, and so she would be singing both of them. She had a good chance to take home this award, but there were some other good songs out there.
That evening Karen took home 1 Grammy Award for BEST POP/ROCK FEMALE PERFORMANCE for SOMEWHERE OVER THE RAINBOW. Karen was thrilled. Her single BEAUTIFUL had been nominated for SONG OF THE YEAR, and she was stunned to lear it had won. Unfortunately the writer of the song, Rick Bond was not able to make it, so Karen went up to accept the award on his behalf.
"Well this is a surprise! It is with regret that the writer of this awesome tune, Rick Bond is unable to accept this award, but I will accept this award on his behalf. I just want to add a few words. I fell in love with this song and knew immediately that I had to record it. And so I did, and it gave me another Number One hit, as well as another Number One Adult Contemporary Hit," she paused, and the audience began to clap. They knew how many Number One singles she had had in her career. Alot. She continued on, "Hopefully one day I will be able to meet this Rick Bond, but until then, I hope he writes another song for me. Thanks again!" and with that, she left the stage. The show continued on.
Upon winning the Grammy for SOMEWHERE OVER THE RAINBOW, Karen walked up the stairs to the stage, and facing the audience, she said, "I have always loved this song, ever since seeing The Wizard of Oz movie and hearing Judy Garland's version. As a young girl, I wanted to find someone that I could share my life with, and now I have. He has given me the hope and faith in myself and in my music. I have spent many a year in the rain, but now have found the end of the rainbow, so I dedicate this award to my husband Jonathon Andrews!" Everyone stood up and clapped as Karen left the stage to go backstage.
Afterwards, everyone came up and congratulated her on her wins. There were some performers who resented Karen for taking home so many Grammys, and they didn't think it was fair. They were nice to her face, but denounced her and ridiculed her in their circle of friends and business associates. Unfortunately that was the world of show business, where not everything was as it appeared to be. Everyone wanted to be on the top, and they would do anything to sabatoge another person's career to further there own, regardless of the cost. Karen went back into the recording studio, with Jonathon's blessing as he knew what her career meant. He loved her so much, that he gave her the opportunity to continue recording, even though she was a bit hesitant on how he might react. Her track record for previous relationships was not terribly great, as they had a hard time dealing with her career coming first.
The Boone Girls came down to L.A. to record with Karen. There was Cherry, Laury, Lindy and Debby, and all were beautiful singers, whose voices blended with each other. Karen wanted to record the songs Amazing Grace and How Great Thou Art. These songs were in a higher key, but Karen had no difficulty hitting these high notes. She was glad to get the chance to show others her ability to be able to sing with such ease and grandeur. Not because she wanted to show off or anything, but she knew that she had a gift, and she wanted to be able to share it with others.
All the Boone girls were alone in L.A. so Karen invited them to her place. Jon was away on a business trip with his restaurants so all of the girls had a big sleepover. The 4 sisters were Christian, but it didn't seem to bother Karen any. She had been raised in a Methodist Church, and even though she didn't go to Church except for special occasions, she still believed in God. They had some interesting talks, between the 5 of them. Karen had a ball, taking them shopping and dining them. They hit all the local spots, and Karen was able to get them more exposure with her celebrity connections, even though Debby was well known, and Cherry well known as a respected author.
Karen willingly played drums on all the tracks, and helped to produce the album. Brown Bannister, a very well known producer in the Gospel world helped Karen. He had done some amazing producing for Amy Grant, whom Karen had met on a few occasions, at the Grammys and other events.
Brown Bannister and Karen were talking and making plans on her doing a Gospel Christian Contemporary album. He had always been a fan of her voice and was blown away at the chance to work with one of the singing half of the Carpenter hit duo. The album was done, and the Boone girls all left for their respective homes, and promised to keep in touch. They would be singing and helping with the background vocals for Karen's upcoming Gospel album.
Jon came back, while Karen was busy with several album projects. A Christmas album, a Gospel album, A country album, and a Carpenters album. She had never been this busy before, but she knew by this time that she was expecting, and that she would be out of the limelight for the next few years, and so with these projects completed, she would still musically be known and not forgotten. Jon was busy with negotiations of opening his restaurant here in Los Angeles. Yet they made time for each other, and much to Karen's happiness found that Jon was a real romantic at heart. He surprised her in many ways, and kept their love fresh.
He was so thrilled with the news that Karen would soon be a mother. July 25, 1989 Richard and Mary welcomed Mindi Karen into their family. Everyone was so happy, especially Karen, who was now 5 months along, and starting to show. It didn't matter to her, that she was gaining weight. It was for her baby, and she needed to be as healthy as possible. One good thing she was glad about. Her wide hips. Everyone had said they were good for childbearing, so she was pleased about that. The twins weren't too pleased about the new arrival of their sister Mindi. They didn't like the fact of their attention being now focused on something else. So Karen made sure that they were not lacking in attention, and gave them lots of gifts and lots of love. Whenever she could, she would take the kids to her place, and give Mary a much needed break. Plus it gave Karen practice for when her turn at motherhood came.
Karen and Jonathon hired some workmen to tear the some of the wall down in between their huge upstairs master bedroom, to join a bedroom to theirs which would be the nursery. Karen had lots of fun redecorating the room. The nursery had pale blue sky on the walls with puffy clouds on it. She got a crib, with several musical mobiles to place over it. There was lots of dresser space, and closet space. Jon's dad had made a beautiful wooden chest for the baby, and Jon's mom crocheted some outfits which looked beautiful. Mom and Dad Carpenter also contributed and gave some curtains, toys and clothes for the baby.
