Chapter Twenty Two
February 4th, 1989 dawned and it was a beautiful day. The sky was a beautiful, striking shade of blue, offset by white, pale clouds. The sun was shining, and the birds were singing gaily from their trees.
Karen awoke, feeling refreshed. The day was upon them. Her day, and His day. Their day. This brought a smile to her face, as she leaped out of bed. She still had so much to do. There would be over 500 guests at her wedding, and about 2/3rds of them would be Hollywood associates, celebrities, and friends. No doubt it would be a circus out there. But she didn't care. It would be her wedding day and nothing would matter except to marry the man she loved.
Karen showered, and Mary came to help her get ready. Agnes and Bernice came to help her put on her wedding dress. It had cost Karen a fortune to have this dress tailored for her, more than her 1980 gown. It was an off white silk dress with a fitted bodice. The shoulder straps didn't go over her shoulders, but encircled her arms. Billowing under the straps were a lacy, petal-like sleeves gathered to her wrists. The top part of the bodice, revealed part of her chest, but tastefully. She wore a matching neck band. The gown part billowed out and layers and layers of starched material were underneath her dress. A train of 15 feet was behind her, and designs of flowers were woven into it. Karen wore a veil, which covered her face to her waist. The veil was over 15 feet long, and lay on the ground atop the train. Karen's hair was piled high atop her head, and she wore pearl earrings. She wore high heels that elevated her to over 5ft6 and she looked lovely. She also wore a garter belt with white and red lace. She carried over a dozen roses both red and white, which was the theme.
Agnes and Bernice got emotional, looking at Karen in her dress. They wiped away tears, as Karen said, "Please don't get me started. It'll ruin my make-up!" which started them in laughter. Agnes hugged Karen, and said three words that meant a lot to Karen. Any positive emotion from Agnes, was heaven-sent as if the heavens opened up, and pronounced their blessing upon the nupitals. "I love you!" were the simple but heavily cloaked words that came from the depths of Agnes' heart. Tears came to Karen's eyes as they hugged in a warm embrace.
"I'm so proud of you Karen. You look so beautiful, and I am so happy for you. I wish you only the best!" were the words which came from Auntie Bernice, who gave a generous hug and a kiss to the bride-to be. Now Karen started to spill tears all over her face, which made her cry even more. Luckily, her make-up didn't need to be adjusted. Mary was the Matron of Honor, and looked lovely. Even though she was very pregnant, she wore a red gown, with white trim. Her blonde hair was piled up, and she wore a red neck band around her neck. She also wore pearl earrings.
The other bridesmaids were Jonathon's sisters, and the other groomsmen were Mark, and Jon's brothers. Richard was Jonathon's Best Man. He wore a black suit with red vest. Jonathon looked so perfect, wearing a black suit, with a white rose on his lapel. He wore a red and white vest, with a red tie. His hair looked stylish, as he had just gotten a trim.
The guests were there by lunch time, and everyone was milling around. Celebrities and non-celebrities alike were mingling. The backyard was a sea of colors, and it looked just picture perfect, with all the trees standing so tall and lovely, the hedges all pruned, the fountains displaying their uniqueness. A lot of work, dedication and planning had gone on to make Karen's yard so magnificent.
The music began to play, and everyone stood up to face Karen, whose arm was rested on her father Harold. Harold gave her a kiss, and Karen beamed, as a tear slid down her face. She had to self-will herself to not continue to get sentimental and start to cry otherwise she would ruin her make-up.
They began to walk to the strains of Handel's Largo, which was so elegant and beautiful. Richard was playing on the White Grand piano and singing it. All sounds stopped; even the birds in the tree listened. His beautiful voice which had usually always sang background to Karen's lead, was now able to soar in such a way that even sent chills down her spine, it was eerie.
Her very good friend, whom she considered like a sister, that she had never had was Sandi Patti Helvering. She had agreed to sing at Karen's wedding and she sang the Ave Maria during the signing of the registry. Karen was so touched to hear, what Gospel music circles dubbed, "the voice." She knew why. Sandi could soar to the heavens with her multi octave voice. She had such power and beauty. It brought a tear to her eye just to listen to Sandi sing so elegantly.
The rest of the wedding was a dream, and everything happened so quickly. She remembered her vows, and said them with crystal clear dictation. By this time she was weeping, as she said that she would love, honor and cherish Jonathon Mikel Andrews. When the Pastor said, "You may kiss the bride!" Jon did it with so much enthusiasm, that Karen was literally swept off her feet.
Everyone clapped and cheered, as they went racing down the pathway, laden with rose petals. The Carpenters recording of WE'VE ONLY JUST BEGUN was being played, as Karen laughed, holding on to her husband. They and the rest of the wedding party left to have their photos taken.
The afternoon passed on, with memories that would be imprinted on Karen and Jonathon's mind for the years to follow. Karen was so happy, and other guests could sense her radiance, and knew that it wasn't for show. She had found her man. The train was detached, as well as the long veil, so it gave Karen more of a chance to mingle and visit with all the guests.
Personalities, like Barbra Streisand, Olivia Newton-John, Barry Gibb, Donna Summer, Debby Boone, Cherry Boone O'Neill and her family, Herb Alpert, Phil and Karen Ramone,Ed and Frenda Leffler, Debbie Vaiuso, John Davidson, Dorthy Hamill, Neil Sedaka, Elton John, and so many others. She spotted Sandi Patti, and went over to give her a hug for singing so beautifully.
The food was buffet style, and well catered. The tables were so decorated with white and red roses, and added to the décor. There was a lot of help with a staff that was hired, and they did their best to keep everyone happy, and everyone's champagne filled. Everything about the wedding spelled elegance.
The dance was nice, with the Carpenters' Band playing the music. Of course, many Carpenters classics were being played…ONE LOVE, TOP OF THE WORLD, WE'VE ONLY JUST BEGUN, FOR ALL WE KNOW, SUPERSTAR, TOUCH ME WHEN WE'RE DANCING, IN LOVE ALONE, TOGETHER AGAIN, DREAM SISTERS, THOSE GOOD OLD DREAMS, BECAUSE WE ARE IN LOVE, and so many other songs.
By the time, Karen and Jonathon left, the party still went on and on, until after 2:00 a.m. in the morning. Jon Andrews and his new bride Karen Andrews were already at a deluxe hotel. The time they entered their bridal suite, they were both too tired, so they undressed and sank into the heart shaped bed.
They lay in each other's arms as they both closed their eyes. There would be time later, when they were in Canada. Tomorrow, there would be a gift opening, and making their debut as Jonathon and Karen Andrews. Then it was off in their jeep to Canada. They were so looking forward to their time alone.
