It was now midnight, and everyone was talking and sharing and reminiscing of Christmas past, when all of a sudden Jonathon dropped in front of Karen, on one knee, and grabbed a hold of her hand. His hand was shaking, and then Karen's was shaking.
The time had come. She had always imagined it this way, and now the time was upon her. She could feel everyone's eyes upon her, but she just focused on staring at the man of her dream's face.
"Karen, I love you so much. You mean the world to me, and ever since I first laid eyes on you, I knew you were the one. I was so afraid to let you know how I felt then, but now I know that you are the one. I am asking for your hand in marriage, for you to be my wife, and I to be your husband, who will protect and care for you always, through better and worse and sickness and in health. Karen, will you marry me and make me the happiest man in the world?" said Jon in a slightly shaky, yet almost controlled voice.
Karen's eyes were rapidly filling up with tears, as she nodded and the words elegantly slipped out, "Yes! I will marry you, my love!"
Jon slipped the 12 carat diamond shaped like a heart onto her finger, and they kissed with so much passion that everyone laughed and clapped. Everyone was glad the kids were in bed, otherwise the kids would have been saying yuck and gross.
Karen and Jon's arms were wrapped around each other as everyone gathered around them, and congratulated them. Harold's eyes were brimming with tears, and as always found it hard to say the words he wanted to say. Agnes kissed Karen and Jon and said simply but with meaning, "Welcome to the family Jon!"
Richard and Mary came by, and hugged them both. The neat thing was that both Richard and Jon took a liking to each other. They both were into classic automobiles, and had since Karen and Jon's first date, they had gone to several auto shows. Plus, he was Mark "BEAR" Rudolph's best friend, as well as Mary's.
Another surprise that evening was that Richard and Mary were expecting again sometime in July. Agnes and Harold were beaming with happiness. Harold seemed to have so much energy, it was almost shocking considering that his health hadn't been good at all. This good news seemed to have given him some extra strength.
Finally it was time for bed, but before they headed to the various bedrooms, they had to get the kids stockings filled and presents displayed. The living room looked like a children's department store with what seemed like several hundred neatly wrapped presents all over, all in different shapes and colors.
Karen was sleeping in the study, with a cot in it. She gave her huge room to her parents who were spending the night. Jon was sharing a room with his friend Mark. The huge house almost seemed small, but that was the way it should be. How awful to spend Christmas in a big house, with no one to share it with.
In the dark, while laying on the cot, she kept touching her ring. It was so beautiful, and made more so by the man she would be joining her life with. Even if it had been 1 carat, she still would have loved it. The ring didn't matter to her as much, but the symbol of their love. That would stand the test of time. Finally though she fell asleep for a few short hours before the kids came screaming down the stairs, wanting to open their presents.
Christmas Day. December 25, 1988 was here. A beautiful day for everyone. Jon was being so silly, with his hands all around Karen's body, tickling and teasing her. "Stop it!" she would say, and yet not really meaning it. She wanted to save herself fully for him on their wedding night for that special moment when they would become one.
Jon's parents gave Karen and Jonathon a beautiful Christmas present: a 2 week stay in Canada, and Karen was so thrilled. She and Richard had toured Canada a few times, and loved it so much, and had always wanted to go back for a leisurely visit, but their schedules never permitted. Jon and Karen decided to go there for their honeymoon, as they were planning their wedding for February 4, 1989.
Karen had wanted that date, because to her it was a symbol of a second chance at life. Six years had come and gone, and so much had happened in that time. She had grown, matured, found herself and found love. She just kept shaking all that day and the next for all this unexpected happiness that she finally found. It hadn't been easy, but now, it was well worth the wait.
She would soon be Mrs. Jonathon Andrews, and it was decided that she would be Karen Andrews. She wouldn't be known anymore as Karen Carpenter anymore. Now that her life was merging with his, she wanted to be by his side. Her career wouldn't be as important anymore, now that she had found what she wanted in life. She still wanted to sing, make albums, act on television, but these weren't her life anymore. She had made the choice. And she would stick by it. Of course it wouldn't be easy, as she would have people telling her that if she stayed away from the limelight too long, her fans and the general public would forget her. She didn't buy into that theory, as she knew that she would always have a healthy following.
Karen had been nominated for several Grammy Awards, and so she was excited. She would be married, and coming back from her honeymoon by the time she made her debut as Mrs. Jonathon Andrews. She couldn't wait. Preparations were underway for the Wedding of the Decade, or so the Society Papers said. There was excitement around Hollywood. Everyone wanted to be invited to Karen's wedding. Those who had been at her first wedding in 1980 knew how much a splendid affair it would be.
Jon wanted it to be a small affair, but accepted the fact that Karen was a public figure. So they chose the best caterers, lavish flower arrangements, best dance band, and everything to make it wonderful. Karen planned to have the ceremony outside her home in the beautiful back yard, which was now complete.
Karen had dropped some weight, and now weighed 106 pounds, but this was nothing serious. Just last minute stress added to the wedding plans. She still looked great. She was tanned, and looked as lovely as ever.
