Ever since 1970, when he first heard her crystalline voice on the radio singing CLOSE TO YOU or WE'VE ONLY JUST BEGUN, he was captured by her voice, and went out and bought the albums and singles. He got teased alot for being a fan of her voice and image. But he didn't care. How could you not like that voice? That voice. Incredible. He had never heard anything like that before. Sure he liked Helen, Barbra and Olivia, but they could not compare with Karen's vocals, her warmth, phrasing and intonation. No one could.
He wondered what it would be like to kiss her. He had imagined it for a long time, and it had seemed like a dream, when he got to dance with one of the biggest international stars at his friend Mary Rudolph's wedding. She was a dream, and he thanked his lucky stars for that chance to meet "the" Karen Carpenter, who was very sweet, fun, and loveable.
He loved her smile. Her teeth were so perfect. Her face perfectly formed. Her hair so silky and shiny. Her skin so smooth and satiny. Her body so formed. Everything about her was perfection, in his mind.
She gazed at him, looking him over, and memorizing the face in her mind. Every contour and every line of him, she focused on. She would never forget this man. She had never, ever felt this way before. She had thought she was in love before, but had never felt the sensations she felt right now.
They went for a walk, after the cheque was taken care of. Since it was a bit chilly out, Jonathon, like a true gentleman, took his jacket, and wrapped it around Karen's shoulder. Just the touch of his hand on her shoulders sent shivers down her body. He wrapped his arm around her waist as they went walking down the street. They talked of their lives, in more details, their hurts, their triumphs, their goals and dreams. They both learned even more about each other than they did in the restaurant. This setting was more intimate.
By the time, he dropped Karen off at her home, it was already after 2 p.m. They exchanged phone numbers, arranged for another date, and gave each other a warm hug. Karen wanted to kiss him, but felt it was still too early for that. Meanwhile, when Jonathon Mikel Andrews drove off, he was berating himself for not taking the opportunity to kiss her. He was so upset with himself. But he was not the only one.
As Karen watched him drive off, she was upset for not kissing him. The dual sides of her personality were at war with each other. One wanted to be free and kiss. The other side of her wanted to be careful, and wait.
She entered into her house, and everyone was asleep. It was quiet. She kicked off her heels, and rubbed her sore feet, as she leaned against the wall. She was too tired to grab a bite to eat, so she headed up to her room and went straight into her bathroom, to take off her make-up. She undressed and slipped into a nightgown. She settled herself into her cold bed, and lay there, hoping to get warm soon.
Thoughts of him were on her mind. She was in love. She knew it all along. He was the one for her, the one that she could spend the rest of her life with. She had never believed those who had said that a person could fall in love on sight, but now she wondered. Just the thought of him sent shivers down her spine. She knew that he wanted to settle down, as much as she did, and have a family. Soon though, she fell asleep, with thoughts of Jonathon in her dream.
