Chapter Twenty
One day, as Karen entered the front door, she saw her Auntie with a wicked grin on her face. Karen knew that something was up. "What's up? Why are you looking so devilish? What are you hiding from me?" asked Karen, trying to figure out what her Aunt was up to.
"Nothing…Just that I know someone who wants to have dinner with you…" said Bernice very slyly.
"Whatever are you talking about? With who" asked Karen, her voice rising higher.
"He wants to get together with you tonight for dinner. I told him that you would go, so he will pick you up at 8 tonight. So you better get ready, my dear niece," said Bernice, trying not too hard to smile like the Cheshire cat.
"You mean he's coming tonight?? Who is he? Do I even know him?? I'm not even ready!!!" squealed Karen in consternation.
"Well you better get ready, you only have 1 hour," said Bernice, as she hurriedly left the room laughing.
Karen just stood there, glancing at the clock. What should she do? Should she go, or should she just stay home. She didn't know what to do. Ooohh! She was kind of upset with her Auntie for doing this to her. She hated being set up with someone she didn't know. It wasn't her style. She just stared off in space, and all of sudden, she realized that if she did go, she would have only 45 minutes to get ready. Where had the time gone?
Karen hurried into her room, and began rummaging thru her closet looking for something suitable. She finally settled on a red satin dress. She stepped into the bathroom for a quick shower, and after that was done, she began to blow dry her hair, which was quite long again. She applied make-up and slipped into her classy dress. She wore red high heels with it, which enhanced her long, slim legs. She wore her hair long, but in a french braid. She wore silver earrings with a silver chain around her neck. The top part of the dress was like a blouse, which was low cut, but tasteful. For the belt, she wore a silver chain around her slim waist.
By the time she came downstairs, her Aunt had magically appeared, and whistled in amazement at how chic her niece looked. And very healthy looking too. Bernice had tears in her eyes. Her niece looked radiant and so lovely. The man she set Karen up with would she be surprised, and so taken with her beauty. She couldn't wait to hear how the evening went, when Karen would come home.
Karen went to the mirror, and began to adjust her make-up, and fix her hair. She was so very nervous, and that was why she kept fidgeting. The doorbell made her jump, as Bernice answered the door.
"Hello Jonathon! How are you this evening?" asked Bernice. Karen all of a sudden knew who it was, and her heart jumped in excitement. She didn't even have to hear his voice to know who he was. She knew. He had been at Richard and Mary's wedding, and had danced a few dances with her, especially to WE'VE ONLY JUST BEGUN. He was a good friend of Mary and Mark, Bernice's children.
He entered the house, and Karen could see him, framed there in the doorway. He was tall, about 6 ft 2, and about 185 pounds. He was muscular, with a good strong build. He was dressed well, and she could smell the cologne on him. He was dark haired with blue eyes, and a generous smile. The light shone on his wide shoulders, and she was just so mesmorized by him. Her mouth seemed to drop open, at this vision of a handsome Greek god before her.
He was taken by the beautiful creature standing before him. She was just as lovely as the night he had danced with her. Since that night, she had always been on his mind. He just couldn't seem to get his mind off her. Karen. Such a lovely name, he thought to himself. She had such a shapely figure, all in the right places. He had been too nervous to ask her out that night, and every night after that, he could have killed himself for not taking that chance. Sure, he had gone out with other woman in the past year, but none had taken her place.
"Karen, let me introduce Jonathon Andrews to you. He is a good friend of Mark's, and I am sure that you may remember him from Richard and Mary's wedding," said Bernice trying her best to keep the giggle out of her introduction.
"Hello Jonathon. Of course I remember you. We danced several dances together. Do you remember?" asked Karen, as her face deepened to a rosy red. She felt as if her body was on fire.
"You look even more fabulous than you did at the wedding. I am so glad that your wonderful Aunt Bernice kindly arranged this little get together. I want to spend some time getting to know you better, if that is alright with you?" stated Jonathon, in his deep voice.
"Well you kids just go out and have a good time!" said Bernice, as she shooed them off. Karen grabbed her purse, and they walked out to where his car was. It was a Rolls-Royce, and very well maintained. From the way he was dressed, it appeared that he lived a comfortable lifestyle. Like a gentleman, he opened the door for her, and she sat in the passenger seat.
They made some polite small talk in the car, on the way to the restaurant St. Germain, which happened to be one of her favorite restaurants. How did he know, or was it just a coincidence? She realized that he had probably talked to her cousin Mark, and that was how he had found out.
They arrived, and the maitre'd, upon seeing Jonathon and Karen, took Jonathon's reservations, and led them to the corner of the elegant room, where they were seated. Karen was seated first, and then Jonathon. Menus were brought to them, and a vintage bottle of wine was brought to them. The food was very fine, and tasteful. Karen felt a bit nervous eating in front of him, but she soon let her shyness vanish, as they reminisced about the wedding.
She found out that he was the owner of several restaurants all over the United States, and he was from an average middle-class family. He had 3 younger sisters, and 2 older brothers and 1 older sister. He had been raised in Saskatchewan, Canada for most of his younger life. As he finished high school, he started to work in Restaurants all over, and soon he made his mark. He had never married, as his life in the food industry and travelling all over took up too much of his life, but now he was ready to settle down.
Karen mentioned her family, her niece and nephew, her parents, her musical life and career. He shyly told her that he had always been a fan of her music and voice. He said that twice in the early 1970's he had been at a Carpenters concert, and always used to fantasize about meeting and falling in love with the gorgeous female drummer/singer. At this Karen blushed and let out a nervous giggle. Her heart started beating faster again. She really liked this guy. Almost as if he had known her thoughts, he said, "So what do you think Karen?"
"About what?" responded Karen in a coy smile. She felt all tongue-tied inside. There was so much that she wanted to say, and yet couldn't. She wanted her feelings to be made known, and yet she didn't want to rush it. But she knew that something special was happening between herself and Jonathon…call it chemistry. It was a feeling.
"Well you know…are you glad for us to be able to get together like this? Or is it just me, am I reading all the wrong signals?" questioned Jonathon. His forehead wrinkled slightly, and his eyes looked a bit concerned. She could just see clearly thru his blue eyes, so vivid, and eyes that she could stare at for the rest of her life.
"I am glad to be here with you…I must confess that I was a bit miffed at my well-meaning Aunt, but now…well, I am just glad to spend this evening with you. It's nice, I think…" trailed Karen, as she stared at her drink. She knew that if she continued to stare into his soulful eyes, she would never be able to stop. What was she doing? Was this what she wanted? Was she ready for a relationship? She knew the answers to those questions, and it made her so happy. She felt like a school girl in love. Here she was this 38 year old woman, acting all silly.
"So you think that we might have something here?" asked Jonathon, in what he hoped was his most nonchalant voice, but what really sounded too hopeful. His face reddened as he did not want to come across as desperate.
"I hope so," said Karen, carefully choosing her next words. She didn't want to seem too anxious. "I mean, well, I don't want to rush it, or anything, but…" her voice trailed off, not really knowing what to say next.
"I understand what you are trying to say Karen. I really do. I have been hurt in the past by other relationships, and I don't want to go thru that again. It's too painful," Jonathon softly said, as he gazed in her eyes.
She had such amazing eyes, yet so full of sadness. Her eyes seemed to match her voice which at times sounded so melancholy. Why did it seem that this extremely gorgeous woman always seem so sad. Even in her smile, he could sense pain. She should be given the chance to experience all the happiness in the world. Secretly, he hoped that it would be him, to lead this creature to the land of sunshine and laughter, where polkadots and moonbeams existed.
One day, as Karen entered the front door, she saw her Auntie with a wicked grin on her face. Karen knew that something was up. "What's up? Why are you looking so devilish? What are you hiding from me?" asked Karen, trying to figure out what her Aunt was up to.
