Chapter Eighteen
During the month of March, Karen was at various meetings taking a look at different scripts that were handed to her. She read through a lot of them, and some of them she was very interested in. Some was just plain idiotic, and would even be a waste to consider.
She met with the producers of LOVE BOAT and negotiations began for her to star as a woman who had lost her husband, who happened to be a superstar celebrity. She would change from a timid, shy, meek woman to someone who found love and also discovered her own musical talent. The singing part wouldn't be a stretch for her, but at least she could try her hand at acting. The only difference in her singing style would be that she would be singing all country and western styles, but that didn't seem to bother her.
Filming began near mid-March, and she was kind of familiar with filming and the boredom that goes along with it. They would stop and re-shoot, and start again. Over and over again. At least Karen got to meet the cast, who were equally excited to meet one of the popular female vocalist of all time. Karen was pleased, but a bit modest about being hailed as such.
Karen's character was a woman named Cristy Allen who had been married to Ross Allen, a superb vocalist who had sold millions of hit records. He had just recently died, and she had found out that all their money was gone, as he had made bad investments. She had enough to go on a cruise, to find out what she wanted in life. What would she do, as she was only in her mid-thirties.
Christy Allen went on the cruise with her friend Tracey Simon, who was a gorgeous blonde, curvaceous woman. Christy felt undesirable, and didn't think she was remotely good-looking. On the cruise, much to Christy's chagrin, Tracey enters her in a talent contest. Christy resists, but to no avail. The night of the contest, Tracey dresses up Christy, and Christy is shocked at how good she looks. She is very scared at how she will sing. She considers her late husband the singer, and not she. She opens her mouth, and everyone is amazed at how unique she sounds. The sounds just pour out in a beautiful melody, and she recieves encores. By the end of the cruise, she meets the man of her dreams, and falls in love. She has found purpose in her life.
Karen loved the opportunity to act, and plans were underway for her to continue being a special guest star as Country singer Crystal Allen, who changed her name from the plain Christy to the more sensational Crystal.
The night LOVE BOAT aired, it received high ratings on the Neilson's at # 3. A new aspect of her career had opened up. PEOPLE magazine came and interviewed cast and crew on Karen's debut on a television show titled LOVE SONG QUEEN AND A LOVE BOAT.
Since the LOVE BOAT episode with Karen as Christy Allen, she was invited back two more times and reprised her role as the now popular Crystal Allen. She had so much fun taping those shows, and the cast had been really accepting and warm to her. She loved acting, and wished that she had more time to do that.
Karen was back at the recording studio putting together some tracks for a future album, and listening to some demo tapes. One, among several caught her ear. She just was drawn to this song. There was something about it that she loved. It was almost intoxicating. Sounded very dream-like, which she adored.
It was titled "Beautiful" and was written by a guy named Rick Bond. It featured a Tony Peluso-like guitar solo which made her smile. Ever since his ground-breaking fuzz guitar solo on their 1972 controversial GOODBYE TO LOVE, musicians loved merging the ballad and guitar solo.
So long ago and far away
I was ready to say Goodbye To Love
But then I met the one for me
When I was feeling down,
He brought me above
Above the pain
Above the lonely
He called me beautiful
Tears came to my eyes
He called me beautiful
He put joy in my life
So she promptly went into the studio and recorded the full length version of the song. Her voice just melted itself to this song, as if this song came from her heart. During the recording session, she also recorded another song that she had written titled "What May Have Been."
I sit alone here
In the dark
Counting the hours since you left
Taking my shattered heart with you
Remembering all the love we shared
And all the plans we had for tomorrow
That would bring us joy and love
Yet I think of one line
Over and over in my mind
What may have been..
I don't know
And I don't care
Anymore
I just want to lay down
And close my heart
What may have been...
Is from some other time
And in another place...
The days go by
And turn into weeks
I feel fine and I smile at the world
Yet underneath all that superficiality
I want to lay down and cry
To scream my pain and sorrow
When I remember...
What you did to me
What may have been...
