Carpenters had 20 top 40 hits in the US (the hits were slightly different in Japan and the UK--two of their largest non-US markets).
Which hits in the US do you think have really stood the test of time? By this I do not refer only to Karen's voice, which is of course eternal, but also the arrangement, production, and lyrics.

Many musicians talk about "Sing" because it's very much to sing-along yet, has an extremely complex, sophisticated arrangement that can be discussed about for days. Personally, I think "Please Mister Postman", bacause of the same reason as "Sing" but it shows Richard's arrangement skills. (People of my age have started buying Beatles after they heard this song.) Many people think it's a Carpenters-song! For the same reason, "Jambalaya", though it was not as much a big hit, but still remains an evergreen, and when people hum these songs they sure are thinking of the Carpenters, no matter if you are a fan or not! I went to Karaoke with a girl raised in Texas. She hardly heard of the band the Carpenters. Still, she was singing "Please Mister Postman" as well as "Jambalaya" like on the Carpenters record. When I told her who wrote these songs she was very surprised because she just picked it from the radio which obviously kept playing the Carpenters-version.

Putting into consideration the vocals, musical arrangement, lyrics and overall sound I'd have to say these are the hits which have stood the test of time: Rainy Days And Mondays Superstar Goodbye To Love Solitaire Album tracks which have sttod the test of time: Baby It's You Sometimes A Song For You Road Ode I Can't Make Music Desperado Two Sides I Just Fall In Love Again I have a feeling that this can be different from people of different parts of the world.

We've Only Just Begun has really stood the test of time. It's remembered and known by young and old alike. I've seen it on alltime favorite countdowns. I still hear it on the radio from time to time. also Close To You, Rainy Days And Mondays and I won't Last a Day without You.

CLOSE TO YOU with it's classic keyboard opening is one of the best known openings of any song ever. And how about ONLY YESTERDAY which is the favorite among Carpenters fans.

:)I agree with Rick as far as songs..Superstar, We've Only Just Begun, Rainy Days, and I think For all We Know..but seems every song was special indeed when they got hold of it..and a Song for you is just another that truly and eerily hits the heart because all these deep emotions are felt by the singer as far as the ones listening to them. katt

and I must also add though that even if Karen's long-term anorexia did kill her in the end..I think maybe she was on the road to recovery not long before she did die. It had gone on too long I think and she felt out of control and trapped by her talent. In any case, heaven must have quite a chorus with her in the lead of things!
