All too soon, it seemed she pulled into her parent's driveway. No one came out to greet her, so she went inside.
"Hi Karen! Good to see you again!" exclaimed Evelyn Wallace, a small woman, with brown hair and glasses. She was in her 50's, and as friendly as a bee. She radiated love and energy. Karen and Evelyn gave each other a hug. Karen loved to give hugs, as hugs were seldom given in their home.
"I see you've made it," said an almost aghast Agnes, who did not seem too pleased to have Evelyn and Karen hug.
"Well I wanted to come home, check on how things are, look through my fan mail," said Karen, checking out the situation. She didn't want to rush into anything and regret it later. She needed more patience.
"That blouse. I've never seen it before. When did you get it?" asked Agnes. "Oh, just the other day. I needed some new clothes, so I got some stuff. I'll need more in the next few day," said Karen in a hopeful voice, hoping that her mother would help her carry what seemed to be this difficult conversation.
"Well, if you are interested, I was looking around and found some nice outfits that would look real nice on you. That is if you are interested, in my coming along with you," asked her Mother.
Karen beamed with happiness. Everything seemed to be working out. Her mother seemed to have done some thawing out. "Sure, that sounds like fun. What about this afternoon?" asked a jubilant Karen.
"Sure. First I have a hair appointment, so I'll go and we can go out for lunch. I'll fix Harold something so he can eat. He's out in the back, helping the gardener. By the way, you should see the new potted plants we just got yesterday. They are in full bloom, and look absolutely gorgeous," said Agnes.
"Oh, I am sure they are. Where is Richard? I thought he would be here by now," exclaimed Karen, her forehead frowning in simple concern. "He'll be by later on. He went to the studio and is checking out some of those demos. He brought some of them over last night, and we were discussing what songs would be perfect for your next album. I am sure that you will love them. From what I understand, is that you may be going on tour this summer and fall to Japan and England. The details need to be worked on, but that was what I gathered. We'll have a nice dinner tonight. I'll have to make some reservations, so don't make any plans for tonight, okay?" said Agnes in an almost authoritive way, but then gently added, "I am glad you came over Karen. It's good to see you."
Karen was so happy. Sure, she had gotten compliments from many major superstars like John Lennon, Barbra Streisand, Toni Tennille, her good friend Olivia Newton-John, Elvis Presley, Paul McCartney, Petula Clark, Dionne Warwick, Johnny Carson, Barry Manilow, Elton John, the Osmond and Boone families, Phoebe Snow, and so many others. But to have her mother say that she was glad to see Karen made Karen feel like a bubbly schoolgirl, once again.
She walked into the fan club offices which were situated into the huge and luxurious Carpenter family home. She saw bags and bags of letters, and she knew that Evelyn would be busy sorting through the vast amounts. She always loved the fan club offices because she felt warm, and a part of something very special. Here she really felt loved and by those who didn't really know her. They loved her unconditionally, and were so very fascinated with her superstar life.
"Is there something that you would like me to help you with, Evelyn?" asked Karen, as she looked around the room. "Shouldn't you be telling me what to do, after all you are my boss?" laughed Evelyn. They always liked to joke around with each other. "Actually would you mind coming and signing some autographs. I have a whole stack for you to go through, with a slip of paper with their names."
"Sure. I just can imagine how happy they will be to get my measly autograph. I can't believe how happy they really do get. I mean, I am human, just as much as they are. I am no different than them. What makes them think I am more special than them?" Karen said. "I guess they love to have the fantasy of what it must be like to live here in Hollywood, and all the riches a person can acquire here. I used to be that way, Karen," stated Evelyn.
"Yeah, I know what," exclaimed Karen, "I used to be like that…used to wonder what it must be like to be a star…to be on television…to get asked for your autographs…to be adored by millions. Now I know, and it's not always easy. My life is on show for millions of people, and to think they would love to be me!"
Karen remained silent, as she began to sign autographs. Dear Theresa, Thank you so much! Love, Karen Carpenter…Dear Alan, Thank you very much! Love, Karen Carpenter. Dear Rebecca, Happy Birthday to You! Love, Karen Carpenter. Dear Brian, Thank you for the wonderful get well card! I love it! Love, Karen Carpenter. So she signed and signed, until her arm ached. She knew what type of self-determination she had. She knew how much love her fans had put in for her, and it touched her. She could even feel the love radiating from their tokens whether it be letters, cards or artwork. Soft music played in the background, and surprisingly, it wasn't always always the Carpenters music, but other artists' work. She especially loved the Beatles, Barbra Streisand, and Olivia Newton-John, among others.
