Good idea! Starting off the New Year with upbeat, happy songs sounds like just the ticket we all could use. Lets see, for me I always enjoy watching Karen sing and play the drums at the same time. She exudes so much joy just being wholly involved. That said, my first song choice (but not my favorite) is "And When He Smiles". The whole band gets to jam together and the sound is quite airy and upbeat. A younger Karen sings to perfection, as usual, and gets to jam with the rest. Who could ask for anything more?

oNE OF MY FAVORITE UPBEAT SONGS IS "DON'T BE AFRAID" i LIKE ESPECIALLY THE LINE "DON'T BE AFRAID TO GIVE ALL YOU'VE GOT TO GIVE, ONE OF THESE DAYS YOU'LL FIND THAT'S THE WAY TO LIVE". "dON'T BE AFRAID IS REALLY NOT A CHRISTMAS SONG ...TECHNICALLY, BUT THE MESSAGE IS ABOUT LOVE AND GIVING AND THOSE ARE SURELY A BIG PART OF WHAT CHRISTMAS IS ALL ABOUT. i LOVE ALSO "THOSE GOOD OLD DREAMS".

Ooh, good choices smoothie2. "Don't Be Afraid" was one of their early song, too ... it just goes to show how fun the Carpenters were in choosing their songs.
Another happy song I really like is "Happy". The melody is a bit different. Sometimes, the way Karen's voice glides through the notes, I get the feeling that the singer is coming from a position of doubt or melancholy to a state of acceptance and happiness.

Oh yes, "Don't Be Afraid"... I love this siple little song. I especially like the line " don't be afraid to love and get love returned"... because a lot of people will give and give and give. They'll do everything to show that they love someone... but when it comes to letting someone else do the giving a lot of times we don't let that happen. It important to let someone else give (your loved one, a friend, a family member). It's just as important to receive as it is to give. "Those Good Old Dreams" is a nice tune... good lyric. "Happy"... of course we knew this one would come up in this topic. I love this song for many reasons. Take away the lyrics and just the music itself is outstanding. Musically it's one of Carpenters' best tunes. I love the extended musical ending. Put the lyrics in and we have a message of taking a chance on love. Great, great song.

How about "Breaking Up Is Hard To Do" because at the very end Karen and the band have a good time laughing and are obviously upbeat.

How about "One Love"?? I didn't see that one mentioned here, unless I scrolled a bit too fast. I love the way Karen's voice just flows in that song---almost dream-like!!

:(One Love is an excellent choice also...Karen's voice flows through grandly .... Even tho the lyrics of "It's a dirty old shame when all you get from love is a love song...." those lyrics are not too happy....the music is upbeat too and a "breezy" song.

One of the best "Happy" songs Carpenters ever recorded is "Dancing In The Street". This song celebrates joy and happiness. This should be our anthem of happiness in 2008! Callin' out around the world, are you ready for a brand new beat? Summer's here and the time is right for dancin' in the street. Dancin' in Chicago (dancin' in the street) Down in New Orleans (dancin' in the street) In New York City All we need is music, sweet music, There'll be music everywhere There'll be swingin' swayin', and records playin, Dancin' in the street Oh it doesn't matter what you wear, just as long as you are there. So come on every guy, grab a girl, Everywhere, around the world There'll be dancin', they're dancin' in the street. This is an invitation, across the nation, A chance for folks to meet. There'll be laughin' singin', and music swingin' Dancin' in the street Philadelphia P.A., Baltimore and D.C now, Can't forget the motor city, All we need is music, sweet music There'll be music everywhere There'll be swingin' swayin', and records playin, Dancin' in the street Oh it doesn't matter what you wear, just as long as you are there. So come on every guy, grab a girl, Everywhere, around the world They're dancin', dancin' in the street Way down in L.A., every day they're dancin' in the street Lets form a big strong line, and get in time, We're dancin' in the street. Across the ocean blue, me and you We're dancin' in the street

Nice choices, everyone. Top of the World has to be one of my all time favorite upbeat Carpenter tunes. Though it is a little bit country, I think it's a fine tune, and I like the idea of such a feeling coming over one and they just are so excited, they've got to sing about it. Another of my faves in this more 'upbeat' catagory is "Sailin' On The Tide." I recall vividly when I heard this one for the first time - it got my attention, and I thought Karen did it so well. SO well....such a lovely voice for such a fun song. Only Yesterday, of course, is a fave. Very positive read on this one, and I played it for my little brother's graduating class.... Richard sang several that were more fun and upbeat like I Kept On Lovin' You, and Saturday. Those were fun tunes, as well. Nice thread, Rick. I'm with you about starting 2008 out on a really positive note. Thanks.

"We've Only Just Begun" is one of my all time favorite Carpenters songs. It is loaded with an upbeat spirit.
The lyrical boost of "we start out walking and learn to run" and the musical build to "sharin' horizons that are new to us, watchin' the signs along the way, talkin' it over just the two of us, working together day to day" fill the song with all the hope and excitement of a new lifetime adventure.
