In this day and age, what role do the Carpenters play in your life?
Are they just a backdrop to the tapestry of your day or do they hold another place in your life?

The Carpenters are certainly more than a backdrop. I find it difficult to separate or compartmentalize the various aspects of life. Prioritizing one element over another doesn't seem natural (though for me, living active faith in Jesus- much more than a religion- does encompass everything.) Being a Carpenters fan is part of who I am; a devotion that helps me better excel in everything I do. Am I saying that the extended Carpenter community is as important as my family and lifetime friends? Of course not- but there is no need to diminish the Carpenter connections, because they enhance all parts of life- and hopefully help me help other lives a little. I am committed to The Carpenters in the same way (if not to the same degree) that I am committed to trying to stay healthy, my job, ministries, etc. And I know I've reached the point where The Carpenter identification exceeds my favorite sports team identification- the Seattle SuperSonics, whom I've followed (with a couple brief lapses) since 1969. Most people who know me know I'm a C's fan- I guess that speaks something.

Karen Carpenter touches my inside. I love Carpenters but it's Karen Carpenter that keeps me interested.
I'm drawn to people who have a heightened sense of artistic value (or expression). Karen Carpenter was an artist of the highest degree. She sang beautifully - though there was much more than beauty in her voice. Her voice was near perfect in pitch and tone. But even beyond that pitch and tone is a little something extra hiding in there. There was a certain determination in her voice coupled with an inborn yearning soul. Her voice was full-bodied and rich. Karen Carpenter is to music as what Picasso was to art. An artist who went beyond the conventional, a one of a kind, a unique soul. I am touched by the artistic works of people like Karen Carpenter, Pablo Picasso and Alexey Shchusev. The deep, the modern, the unique.
Karen Carpenter is a part of the circle of artistry in my life.

;DWonderful replies......Since I found this website, especially, I have learned so much about the Carps....it's always interesting, sometimes I think I'm a bit too drawn in by all of this ..but, actually, to be able to connect with others who individually are very interesting folks, well, that's just plain fun and a pick-me-up ....as far as the C's ...I agree with Rick...Karen is a big factor here.. .......yes, quite an artist...the C's will always be special group, the music timeless, the way they were as a team working and acheiving their goals for so many yrs. I admire them for that. I just enjoy them always....The only other singer that really was such a huge part of my life was John Denver. He will always be in my heart. And now I know and can appreciate that although he was a wonderful singer and environmentalist, he had many faults as we all do, but now that I'm an adult, I know now that: (a) won't get to marry him as I really thought when I was 16.ha...ha (b) hey he had many that helped him succeed he wasn't such a superman. .~~~~~~~~~~~now all kidding aside, I look at the C's as always the drawing point in my life.. they surely had faults also...and yet I only love and miss them as "The Carpenters"...even moreso now and appreciate them more now. And they really are never gone as long as the music goes on and it does......!!!!!1 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

This is a great topic authored by Wisejester... thank you for starting it.
I really like Ming's simple but to the point comment on how Carpenters make him happy when he's sad.
I've enjoyed reading what others have had to say... but am still curious as to what the rest of you think on this topic!
What's your thoughts here?

WJ7, the story I could tell you is pretty much unbelievable. Rick knows it, Tim knows it, E knows it, and Jim knew it. The short version was that I had to educate myself about the history of the duo, because I only knew the short version. You know, talented kids move from Right Coast to Left Coast, become big recording stars, story ends in a tragic blimp accident...stuff like that. But I never knew that there was more, and because of events, I had to learn how and why. I have managed to condense it into a few unrelated events. Stretch along with me, now... Agnes once worked at the aerospace plant in Downey which manufactured the Apollo spacecraft, and later, the space shuttle Columbia. I was "involved" with the Columbia Accident Investigation Board, and contributed several suggestions to the Return to Flight effort. Near the end of May 2004, I began having dreams about Karen...dreams that made no sense at all, because I didn't know what had happened during her life. I didn't care. It all forced me to consider things I had never thought of, and learn some rather basic philosophies all over again. Harry Chapin once sang that "all my life's a circle". It took all of the above for me to understand that concept. But it's been fun, and there have been some really great and helpful folks on here that helped guide a "rookie" towards the pathway of enlightenment. (OK, Rick, can I have a cookie now?
