Of any song Karen Carpenter has sung which would you say you feel are personally you. Which songs really get inside of you. It could be because of karen's voice or the music surroundiong her voice.
There are several for me and I will come back with some of them.
I will mention one right now.
"I Can't Make Music" - It's something about the shimmering sound of this song which really reaches inside of me and becomes a part of me. When I hear this song it's like it almost lives within me. Like as if it's my heart beating inside.

Well, the first song that came to my mind was 'Little Altar Boy'. Karen sings as if she is somewhere between deep prayer and hopeful longing that her life can be what it should be. The hook is that you are privy to her very personal moment of reflection. She carries you right along with her on a very personal, emotional, and reflective journey.
There are many others for me (Christmas and otherwise), but like I said, this song just popped out immediately.

I'll go with only a couple, at first. There are so many. I'll come back with the others. These are songs that we feel personally reflect us, and/or get inside and grab us, right?
The first is "A Song For You." In a similar thread, I have responded how much I love the lyric to this song....it speaks about something that was actually (is, actually) a part of my real life - singing a song....for you! It is not an easy accompaniment to sing so beautifully by, especially at the beginning - I mean....it's just Karen and a couple of laid down piano chords. There is nothing to really "aid" the vocalist, here. The fact is that Karen Carpenter had such a quality, wonderfully spot-on voice, that it seemed effortless for her to read the beautiful opening lines "I've been so many places in my life and time....I've sung a lot of songs, I've made some bad rhyme..." Then the story - oh, just chilling and haunting.
Road Ode is another. I lived it. I remember it. The song goes all over and through me, each and every time I hear it without fail.
There are more. I'll be back. Such a lovely thing to think about. Nice thread, Rick. Tim

"Look to Your Dreams" really captures my belief in trying to hold fast onto ideals and dreams even when life beats you down. "Sometimes" expresses my gratitude and love for family and friends, if not always adequately articulated through words and actions.

Dreams... I have to go along with you on "Sometimes". That song really crawls into my inner being. This is a song which can bring tears to me. It really makes me think about who and what is really important to me. It makes me remember that it's more important to forget about it always being about me, me, me and be grateful for the people and things in my everyday life. To be grateful for those things often overlooked or taken advantage of.

Very good thoughts stated, of course it all depends on the day for me and/or what happens but, i really don't go around depressed all the time, but, the first song I think of is "RAINY DAYS AND MON." This was the first song(yes, i know I've said this lots of times, but..) that I recall hearing on the radio way back when by the C's, and it struck me right then, that song was me that day and time, and Karen became a friend...I just wanted to say...hey there, who sings this....doesn't have to be raining either....raining in my heart and mind. Anyway, i guess I automatically am downtrodden in my view of things more often than the other way around, BUT... I survived many a heartache just as anyone else and I am thankful for many things. Overall, those who know me, consider me mild-mannered and optimistic. To the point of being a bit too much in a "dreamy state." TIM, A SONG FOR YOU also gets me. and i really seldom can listen to SOMETIMES cuz it also can really sadden me. i look for a good laugh too...

My personal song is " We've Only Just Begun" because since I started listening to Carpenters after work it has helped me balance out the 10 hours of mandatory blazin attitude of "Hip Hop" music at work.

"One More Time" is very personal to me. It's the way Karen sings this one. This one really digs inside and pulls in all the right places. By the time it's done I have this feeling of awe.
Another one is "Jambalaya" this one reaches into my inner person in a different way. It fills me with jubilance and that feeling of sunshine. This song reminds me that all things do not have to be dark and gloomy to be deep and thought provoking.

Good Topic Rick there are so many but here are a few Someday this one just represents the 60s to me innocence and love just brings me back to what that decade was about when I hear it Crescent Noon Karens voice and the immagery in this song just floor me everytime I hear it. Simple yet so powerfully stated Superstar simply brilliant and chilling perfect vocal and great arrangement Only Yesterday another near perfect vocal and powerful 60s style arrangement this ones "off the hook" as they say Caught Between Goodbye and I love You A longing tear jerker always gives me chills when I play it even after all this time You beautiful pop song with nice piano and guitarwork Two Sides another beautiful country flavored number excellent guitar overdubs Sailing On The Tide just a fun song that brings me up Making Love In The Afternoon another bring me up that was love at first listen and never grows old on me. There are many more but these are the main staples that are most personal to me whether they are a pick me up or a song that keeps me glued to the head phones absorbing every beautiful note Karen sings all these songs get to me on a deeper level and are most personal to me. Man I love that Karen Carpenter/Carpenters!

Hi Guys, For me, it would have to be...hmmml.
ONE LOVE...just a beautiful song
CRESCENT NOON...a very dark themed song, but I can relate to it, especially with my dark themed past.
SOMEDAY...almost a part two of Crescent Noon. "Someday, rested from hours of sleeping..." kinda reminds me of someone with depression. As I know from personal experience, some people with depression sleep and sleep, and you wake up so tired....but anyways a wonderful song
I CAN'T MAKE MUSIC...a song that is definately a gem. The opening lines get to me..."Here I am just sitting around...with a piano in a vacant room...and the same old feeling's come again..." such a line with feeling and pain.
ONLY YESTERDAY, I have always claimed as my theme...."After long enough of being alone..everyone must face their share of loneliness...in my own time, no body knew the pain I was going thru..." Such an aching song that turns into a happier song.
SOLITAIRE...Need I say more. She sings it beautifully, but portrays the pain eloquently.
These are the ones that REALLY get to me.
My thoughts, Cameron

Great choices- I especially appreciate the references to "Little Altar Boy" and "Crescent Noon"- real favorites. The song that more than any other turned me from a casual Carpenter fan into a fanatic, even though it's not among my very favorites, is "For All We Know." it's the first selection on the Singles C.D., and there was something in the pronounciation of the word "two" (the 5th word of the song) that cemented Karen's ability to personally relate to listeners, and sure drew me in.

Hi Guys, For me, it would have to be...hmmml. CRESCENT NOON...a very dark themed song, but I can relate to it, especially with my dark themed past. These are the ones that REALLY get to me. My thoughts, Cameron Hi Cam, "Crescent Noon" is also on my list of "personal songs". It's interesting how each person can feel something different from the same song. To me "Crescent Noon" speaks of the cycle of life lighting the way through the seasons into a full life which has come and is now lived.
Feather clouds cry A veil of tears to earth Morning breaks and No one sees the quiet mountain bird Dressed in a brand new day The sun is on its way To a falling crescent noon
To me this verse speaks of the rain which leads to a beautiful clear morning sunrise whcih brings a new day leading to the night fall. It's a very poetic way of describing the happening of a day.
You and I were Born like the breaking day All our seasons All our green Septembers Burn away Slowly we'll fade into A sea of midnight blue And a falling crescent noon
This verse speaks of a new life (birth). Then growth and maturity which in turn leads to our passing - a natural part of life. I find this song to be a fresh awakening.
Either way you look at it "Crescent Noon" is definitely a very personal song.
Another song which is very personal to me is "Don't Be Afraid". I love the lyric: Don't be afraid to love and get love returned. This song speaks volumes. It's very important to just love and let others love you. There's nothing wrong with love. Even more important there's nothing wrong in loving yourself - exactly for who you are.

Let's see... Rainy Days, I need to be in love, and Solitaire I was pretty lonely growing up and never thought I would find love. So much so, that I never even looked for it. I guess I always related to the more introspective songs. "You" and "I just fall in love again" are songs I always loved. Maybe just maybe, I would find that special person that I could love and be loved in return. They are both a very hopeful and dreamy kind of song for me. (fortunately, I did find that special lady and got my happy ending!)
