I recall this topic being brought up when I was first at Carpenters Online so I thought I would reintroduce it as it was interesting at the time and still is. Here's the question. What Carpenters song is the best fit for you as a person. Its not your favorite Carpenters song but one whose lyrics, style and or whatever else in the song best suits you as a person. Tell us the song and why you chose it (ie how it fits you as a person etc). I will come back later with my pick.

What an excellent topic and question- it'll take thought and consideration but will be helpful to each person who considers it, and we can get to know and support one another to a great degree through this- let's hope as many people as possible get involved!

I have a few in mind. It's hard to narrow this down to one song. But if I had to chose just one song which really fits my personality it would have to be "Boat To Sail".
First because the song says; "I'm a California label from the top of my head". As you all know I was born in California and have lived here all my life. I'm proud to be a Californian.
The song also has a smooth easy-going feel. My life is generally smooth and easy going. The song is also artsy and creative - just like me. Hmmm...

"...I've been so many places in my life and time.... I've sung a lot of song, I've made some bad rhyme.... I've acted out my love on stages with ten thousand people watching... But, we're alone now, and I'm singing this song for you.
I know your image of me is what I hope to be... I've treated you unkindly, but darling can't you see... There's no one more important to me... Darling, can't you please see through me.... Cause we're alone now, and I'm singin' this song for you.
You taught me precious secrets of a truth, withholding nothin'... You came out in front when I was hiding... But now I'm so much better and if my WORDS won't come together... Listen to the MELODY, cause my love is in there hiding.
I love you in a place where there's no space, or time... I love you for in my life you are a friend of mine.... And, when my life is over... Remember when we were together... We were alone, and I was singing this song for you.
We were alone, and I was singing this song.......for YOU..." THIS would be the song I would think best represents me ~ the person I have (I hope) become. As a young man, just out of high school, I went on the road....(been so many places....sung a lot of songs....bad rhyme.....acted out my love on stages.....). I have ALWAYS been involved, somehow, someway, in/with music. It's been a HUGE part of my life. As I hope you can tell by the reviews I have written about Palma's music, I have a sincere passion for good music; good, well executed, beautifully structured vocal harmonies; and good, quality lyrics. Lyrics that tell a story. Lyrics like we have here in this wonderful Leon Russell masterpiece, "A Song For You." You (metaphor for all the people in my life) taught me precious secrets of a truth......withholding nothing. You came out in front (meaning, to me, that you taught me by example) when I was hiding. (so - thank you everyone for teaching me things I needed to learn about how to live my life). But, now I'm so much better (Look! I did actually learn something) and if my words don't come together (though I may not know how to tell you I've learned something, I have, so) listen to the melody, cause my love is in there, hiding. (See, sometimes my words don't say what's in my heart - but, hopefully, when I sing a powerful song with wonderful lyrics, I am telling you from my soul what is on my mind.....listen to the melody, cause my love IS IN THERE, hiding.... "I know your image of me is what I hope to be (I may not really be all the things people hope I am....the may very well "project" an image onto me that they HOPE me to be).....I've treated you unkindly but (people) can't you see (though I may have had a bad word to say, or though I may have, at times, come across angry, rude, or hostile, in reality) there's no one more important to me - (people) can't you PLEASE see through me (more often than not, people, especially those who truly love(d) me could and would take the time to see through me, to the real me) cause we're alone and I was singing this song for you. Yes, consider the words in this song not as man to woman, but as man to a whole world full of people - people from all walks of life - people like you all who, like me, loved Carpenters and their music - people I've met in my travels that I may never meet again, but that I did have the opportunity to meet and, hopefully, learn something from, because of the time I spent on the road, and on the stage. And so on, and so forth. I think A Song For You tells my story. I hope that when my life is over, you will remember when we were together - we were alone.......and I was singing this song, for YOU. All my best, Tim

Tim, That is a great and appropot reflection on and application of this song- all the more true in your case because youare a musician. Thanks for the example of music- and life that you are consciously and unconsciously setting for so many people. O.E.

Good choice on revisiting this thread, Enigma.
My first thought was Tim's choice, "A Song for You, but since he chose that one, there is always another option.
When I was a young girl, another favorite of mine that seems to pin-point myself would have to be "All of My Life" as I was always looking for just the one right for me.
Although it took many years for me to finally find the right soul-mate, now I would have to choose the song "You". This song is exactly how I feel when it comes to finally being able to share my life with that someone special.

:)Yes, Rick and Tim your songs do really seem to fit you guys! I guess "You" fits me best, even though I wasn't "born to belong to the words of a song" although I love music and to sing to it. I have no special ties currently with a special guy, and so to that end I say "I Can dream Can't I?", but my "Carps" are real friends here, more than I would let on to some folks....so "You ( every one of you)are the ones who make me happy when everything else turns to gray. I must admit I don't reach out to people as I should for friends, so friends have always been big part of my life. ....guess that'll hold til later...

Excellent choices, everyone. I've not yet heard "You" and will look forward to that number. Since about the 3rd time I heard it (I'm going back less than a year), I've kind of adopted "When You've Got What It Takes" as a good song to live by- part of a life mission. It speaks of pride in having what it takes, and I apply that not in a sense of flaunting or feeling superior, but rather in a humble and thankful recognition that I have been blessed with a unique combination of gifts and talents, leading to opportunities to do things that no one else could quite accomplish. The song talks about giving, and keeping the promise of love (seeking the best for people.) Truly, when I have a heart to give and to help (and it's a struggle sometimes) the blessings that come back are manifold. Though life is still difficult I am now in a realm of being beyond surviving, to being really alive- many Bible verses come to mind- one of them St. John 10:10. Besides the inspiration of the lyrics, the upbeat 70's style kind of reflects what I like, and as with all Carpenter songs, the mix of instruments is superb- I especially enjoy the harp in this one. Thanks to everyone for your reflections too- interacting with you all is becoming a pretty big part of life. O.E.

More great songs and interesting comments from everybody.
In my post I chose "Boat To Sail" as my song - which believe me if you knew me you'd say it fits me to a tee. It's just such a wonderful easy going, smooth sailing song.
Though, there are others I feel I can relate to just as much.
One such song is "Home For The Holidays". This song carries such a sunny disposition, it seems to have a big smile on it.
"Crescent Noon" is another. It's deep and colorful. It filled with images of nature. The song is mysterious. It's filled with new life and awakenings. The song has symbolisms of romance and affinity.

I sure agree Rick, "Crescent Noon" has always captured my imagination and has been one I would like to think about in more detail. All in all, from the "Close To You" album, it's the most influential selection for me.

There are so many, it's tough to single one out. "Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft" suits part of who I am, the dreamer who has his feet grounded in conventional science, but has enough imagination to believe in what science considers "impossible". "Sailing On The Tide" calls out to the part of me that wants to just lie in a hammock between two palm trees on a tropical island somewhere, somewhere "southeast of disorder" as Jimmy Buffett sings. "Only Yesterday", a song that reminds me of the "transition" between my college days and the return home, also applied to a transition I went through only three years ago. "The Rainbow Connection" speaks to my love of travel, to see what's around the next bend in the road, or what's on the other side of that rainbow? But perhaps it could be summed up with "We've Only Just Begun", a song mostly associated with weddings, but which was the final wake-up song played for the astronauts on the final day of the last Moon mission, in December 1972. If I have my way, and can tickle someone at NASA with a sense of history, it will be the final wake-up song played for the shuttle Endeavour's crew on the final morning of the final STS mission, in January 2010.

I will add my pick to this thread at this time it is actually 2 songs My first pick is my main pick and its Yesterday Once More not only because it is my earliest experiance with the Carpenters and as such had alot of influence over whose music I would like then and all my life but also because its a nastalgic song talking about the past musically speaking and I find I like past decades music and I am nastalgic just like the song, Honorable mention will go to Crescent Noon based on Ricks descxription. The song is mysterious as I tend to be hense my name here. Also the natural imagry in this song is alot of who I am more at home with nature than anywhere else also it is a simple basic song as I truely am.
