"Don't Cry For Me Argentina" from the 1977 album "Passage". What do you think of this song? Do you listen to it or do you skip over it?
*Note: "Don't Cry For Me Argentina" is introduced with an operatic recording of "On The Balcony Of The Casa Rosada". For this particular poll we are only reviewing the song "Don't Cry For Me Argentina" not it's predecessor.

The Carpenters' recording of "Don't Cry For Me Argentina" is the definitive recording of the song. Many others have recorded the song and Madonna has probably had the most success with this song. But I feel as time goes on (and fads wear off) the Carpenters' version will be the one that holds the test of time.
Peter Knight's orchestration is outstanding. He turned this song into a momumental event. Karen's vocal performance is rich and pure. It's as if she was born to sing this song.

I never mind hearing this song, because, as you have all mentioned, Karen sings it beautifully. I do like the wonderful dynamics she brings to it - the story she is telling is that of Eva Peron, and it's quite a story - Karen has all the urgency in her voice, and the other qualities that make this a beautiful listen....however.....I don't knock myself out to find it to listen to, and depending on the mood I'm in, I'll just skip over it many times. I know we're not reviewing "balcony" but had Richard actually made those seperate CD tracks, I might just skip that part, and listen more often to Don't Cry. As it is, I mostly will just skip the entire thing - both songs. Tim

Funny, although I rated this song a "Love It" because I do love this fantastic song - I also usually skip over it. Even if it didn't have the "On The Balcony Of The Casa Rosada" on the begining I would still skip over it. Could be because I played the album "Passage" a countless amount of times between 1977 and 78 anded "Don't Cry For Me Argentina" was a prime cut that I would generally play repeatedly. "Passage" is undoubtedly one of my five favorite Carpenters/Karen Carpenter releases ever - I love every song on it - even "Man Smart, Woman Smarter".

I have always loved this song. I also wondered what it would have sounded like in concert. Well I got my wish the other day when I got a recording of the song that was recorded live in Los Vegas in 1977. It was just as incredible as the album verson but more personal. Karen sings it with just the orchestra and harp etc. Also just before singing the song she jokes around about everyone all worked up about such a big number to perform... It really was cute and her personality just shined. My god the girl could sing....
