Here's a poll including 18 songs written by Richard Carpenter (most with his writing partner John Bettis). Richard wrote quite a few more songs. But for this poll I only included songs recorded after Carpenters were signed to A&M. I chose the songs which include a lead vocal by Karen. I also left out songs which were relaesed as singles. If I were to include the singles then most likely "Only Yesterday" and "Yesterday Once More" would get the most votes. So, I left the singles out to give other songs a chance to shine for a change. Great topic, Rick! Can we have the short but sweet "Aurora/Eventide" as an option as well? Are we allowed just one vote? Some of these songs are appealing for different reasons, so it's going to be tough to decide...

???Tough choices indeed...I chose Maybe it's You although I Have You and Don't Be Afraid came very close. I've always felt this was one of their finest. Even though it's one of the most familiar of their songs at least to me, ...I just love it.

Gee, now that I think of it I should have added "Aurora/Eventide" as one choice along with "Invocation/Benediction". Unfortunately the poll can't be edited. Originally my thought was no bookend songs or reprises - only full length tunes.
Anyway my choice on this poll is "(I'm Caught Between) Goodbye And I Love You". Karen's voice on this song was just so excellent. I just love her deeper somber tones. I also love the low key easy country pop feel of this song.

Lyrically and musically "Crescent Noon" and "Maybe It's You" stand out from the other selections for me. In both songs, the lyrics, melodies and orchestration work in synergy with each other to create a metaphor for human emotions with rich images of nature. (By the way, I enjoy "Aurora/Eventide" for similar reasons.) While "Crescent Noon" is filled with the dark and haunting drama of the changing seasons, "Maybe It's You" is reflective and dynamic --- starting with a trickle, punctuated with the exhilarating pounding of the surf, and ending with an ebb. Karen's deep, rich intonations and Richard's piano accompaniment on these songs are excellent. However, if I were forced to choose only one, "Crescent Noon" would be the one.

A very tough choice Rick. I went with Caught Between Goodbye because it's such a personal and powerful song. It displays Karen's growth as an artist and as a woman. To me, it showed Carpenters growth from the more simple love songs to ones of more depth and life experience. I believe that throughout their career both Karen and Richard continued to evolve and slowly change their music to reflect their growth. I would love to have had them record more songs in this vein.
