It was tough chosing a song from "Horizon" to feature on the "Love It or Leave It" series. Every song on "Horizon" is outstanding. There's not one loser on the album. I was almost going to take the easy way out and chose either "Aurora" or "Eventide" but decided against that and went with only the full songs - not bookend songs.
I chose "I Can Dream Can't I?" because I have heard people saying everything from they love it to it's the worst song Carpenters ever recorded. Where do you stand on this one?

Have always loved the song because Karen is such a natural on singing any song, but I love hearing a "re-do" of all the old songs....one reason for me on this is that these classic older songs perhaps from the Big Band era, are different than the regular C's songs they're famous for. It's like hearing a brand new song...and Karen really does those very well. In fact, I have had this song on my mind quite a bit lately for some reason even though it has been a while since I listened to it, since I only have "Horizon" on vinyl. I agree that there's nothing wrong with any of those songs on the record. The album is really one of their best I think.

In the radio program I listened in 1975, this was the third song I heard from the Horizon album. Compared with the moving songs PMP and Only Yesterday, at first, I didn't like this song, but now, it has grew up soooo high in me! I LIKE IT!!

I love it. This song is different than anything on the record making it stand out. It may be my least favorite off of Horizon but hey we're talking about Horizon here I consider it the Carpenters masterpiece so even a least favorite song gets a I love it which says alot for the rest of the record. Still a great song love the lyrics as well.

Love it. I don't think it is good when I first listened to it, but when I tried to listen to this song once again, I found that it is very good.

This one has always been a "wow" tune for me. I have loved it from the moment I first heard it, and can sit and listen to it over and over again to this day. I love the fact that Karen uses a very low as well as a very high register in this song - I love that it was arranged as a wonderful old 30's tune - I love the fact that there is a beautiful trombone chorus in it,and I think, next to This Masquerade, which everyone should know by now is my all time favorite Carpenter's tune, that I Can Dream, Can't I is my next all time favorite. I can picture a 1930's Karen Carpenter behind an old-time flat mic all done up in one of those great 30's long dresses, with a hair style befitting the era, singing her heart out, as she does on the recording. It's just a fantastic song, and I'm so thrilled that they included it on an LP. Love it, love it, love it. Tim

Love it! I didn't like it when Horizon was out in 1975, but I was only 9. As I grew up, I have totally changed my mind about it. I love the old lyrics and melodies of the classics. It was like discovering the great old black and white movies that I didn't like as a kid. Thank goodness we grow wiser with age! I just wish The Carpenters had a chance to do more old standards. They would have been awesome!

This is a "LOVE IT" all the way.
I loved this song from the very first time I heard it in 1975. But than again anything Carpenters did was like pure honey to me and still is.
And as Enigma stated this is also my least favorite song from "Horizon". Yet I still love the song immensely - just goes to show what an excelllent and strong album "Horizon" is.

Personally, I don't understand why this song made a thread like *Love it or Leave it*..., songs like *(I'm Caught Between) Goodbye And I Love You*, *Love Me For What I Am* and *Desperado* would have *gone to court* much faster than this one, to me.
' love it..., no question. [glow=red,2,300][/glow][shadow=red,left,300] [/shadow][shadow=red,left,300]Roland Chayer[/shadow][shadow=red,left,300] [/shadow]

"I cant dream Cant I " Carpenter's version was recorded in 1975. The time that pop artists doing a 1930's something song in the same 1930's arrangement were unthink of and uncool. The Carpenters, from my knowledge was the first pop artist to do so. And WOW! what a great version. It shows that the Carpenters can do songs from soft rock to old classic standards. It was a big step for them and a big gamble. YEARS................later Linda Ronstadt released three albums in the same forte and was a big success and from then on other pop artist would be releasing old standard albums including, Natalie Cole, Toni Tenille, Rod Stewart and more recently, Carly Simon. Just to mention a few............
And by the way, "I Can Dream Cant I" was the B side of "Love Me for What I am" and both songs were big big big hits back then, In fact Horizon was the biggest selling non-compilation album by the carpenters here in the Philippines. The only songs that were never released as a single and were not hits are bookends Aurora and Eventide. There was even a scheduled concert for them here but they have to cancelled it due to Karen's health
