Hi Everyone: I just posted most of this information under the thread "Karen Carpenter Story", but wanted to get this to your attention - Paula Zahn's show, Paula Zahn, Now, on CNN, will feature an entire hour-long segment on the eating disorders Anorexia and Bulimia this coming Wednesday Night - check your local listings for times. Paula interviewed Jane Fonda for a "teaser" about the show, as Fonda has a new book out - she is 67 years old, currently, and suffered from both disorders for 30 years. She indicates she is recovered, and is living happily for the first time in her life. She stated that she began having problems with both A and B at a young age, in order to gain her father's approval (how sad is that I ask you). Of course, we all know that Karen was doing the same thing - suffering from Anorexia in order to find acceptance/approval, and to be in charge of SOMETHING all her own in her life. I have no idea whether or not Karen will even be mentioned during this hour-long special, but if I were a betting man, I would guess that she will be. Karen, as we know, afterall, brought the issue to the forefront of society. I wanted to pass along this information in enough time that those of you that happen to check the forum would have time to make plans to watch it, or be able to set your VCR's/CD's/TIVO, etc. It's not a wonderful happy subject, but it might give us some more insight into why Karen had to/suffered the way that she did. Happy Halloween everyone. I wish you all the very best every single day of our lives!!! We love you, Karen! Tim

thanks for the info Tim...I usually have watched just about every movie about anorexia ...even though it is a terrible addiction, I like to gain whatever insight and info. that I can about it.... Recently, I saw the movie Seabiscuit about the famous race horse and it's owner. I had forgotten one part of it which was that the owner as portrayed by Toby Maguire... being a jockey...he has to watch his weight. I don't know if he in real life suffered from anorexia, but I can see how jockeys would be prime targets for it. This was something I hadn't thought of until I watched the scene in the movie where Toby (or Red)..is sitting at a table, and he doesn't want to eat ...he doesn't want to do anything that would lessen his chance of winning the race of course. well, ...anyway, just happened to think of that....I will check into the Paula Z. special.

Interestingly, Karen was not mentioned during this hour...not even hinted at..... I don't know whether to feel good or bad about that. Any feelings about this out there? Tim

There've been several programs dealing with eating disorders which don't mention Karen at all. But on the other hand almost every program dealing with great female vocalists definitely mentions Karen. Usually Karen is ranked fairly high.

Of course, that would ALWAYS be my preference - if Karen was going to be mentioned on a program, I would much rather it be because of her unparalleled, absolutely amazing voice, rather than the fact that she had anorexia. So, it does not bother me that she was not mentioned on this show. Knowing that Karen's was really one of the very first celebrity cases of anorexia that people read about should definitely make hers the most widely known case, nevertheless, it remains that her amazing musical talent tells the story of the true Karen Carpenter. How wonderful is that? To my way of thinking - it's as it should be - definitely. Tim

I would rather have Karen be mentionned in programs with Eating Disorders. She still will always be considered the most FAMOUS and BELOVED woman to fall victim to Eating Disorders. She brought it to the forefront with her death. Ironically, she had planned to go back and thru talk shows, talk about her own battle. Imagine how much coverage she would have recieved...the other person at that time, to have some national coverage was the other female singer Cherry Boone O'Neill. Another Gospel singer, Chris Christian's wife suffered from eating disorders, and wrote a book on it...(Chris Christian wrote Want You Back In My Life by the Carpenters)....in this book, the wife of Chris, mentions meeting Karen at Big Bob's Restaurant eating with Karen's Mom and Dad...actually she never met her, but saw her...and then a few weeks later found out Karen passed away when Karen died on Feb 4th. How sad is that.
My thoughts, Cam
