Since Jim has mentioned quite a bit about unreleased material and the possibility of another album of previouly unreleased material I thought this may make a good topic.
Of course we all know there are the nine unreleased Karen solo songs - which nine songs is enough to be an entire album of it's own with maybe a tenth track being an extended remix of "Don't Try To Win Me Back Again". I would love to have an official release of these nine songs. It could possibly be called "The New York Solo Sessions".
As for other songs that I think are prime for release, is the studio recording of "Thank You For The Music" which was done in 1978 during the "Christmas Portrait" sessions. There's also a full length version of "Dancing In The Streets" also done during the 1978 "Christmas Portrait" sessions.
Both songs have shown up in other forms such as the live recording of "Thank You For The Music" featured on the Tonight Show and the short version of "Dancing In The Street" on "As Time Goes By" which was taken from a medley performed on the TV Special "Space Encounters". But to actually have the full length studio versions of both of these songs - which do exist - would be excellent.
Any other songs that you guys know about which are prime for release?

Oh HEAR HEAR!!!!! Couldnt agree with u more pal and in about 5 years time ( when he needs some more "Mooolah" ) along will come a "new album" which will feature more beaut songs in the vien of Rainbow Connection etc... which he just suddenly will have "found" & graciously release em to appease us Carps fans. Yep carps1000 being sarky but it has happened b4 on many occassions. Wish hed stop worrying bout the "image/legacy" thing as I dont want to find fault...just listen to some more new & beautiful songs. Carpenters never put out junk & never sung it either. Mind you we can always xpect another G H package with the same old songs on it......nearer chrimbo. Carps 1000 Ken. Ps Mooolah is a slang word for money in case ya didnt know.

The songs that Rick mentions from the New York sessions were not associated with Richard and not approved by Karen for release as the recordings from the solo album were. Richard said Karen sang too high on those songs and I can bet strongly that he doesn't like them one bit. I know there was a second solo album planned, but I doubt it ever would have been released. The other couple of Carpenter songs are not enough for an entire album. And yet there are Beatle songs and Elvis songs which continue to be "discovered" and release many years after the end of their careers so who knows.
I don't think Richard deliberatly holds stuff back. He is just busy with other things now. Raising five children is tough no matter how rich one is. Anyway, he created all the music and arrangements and should call the shots on it and reap the financial rewards. He gives freely of his money to many causes. Let's not begrudge him life's rewards for hard work well done.
Just my thoughts. Rob

Rob, I have to agree with what you've said here. Dave, I love the idea of your album title and cover. That would be awesome. Richard has eluded from time to time that there were perhaps more Christmas tunes that never made it past the cutting room floor....so maybe there are some bits and pieces of those. I bet there are "bits and pieces" of other things too - attempts that went south - things they'd done a mere lead vocal to so the band had something to work with - we know some of these actually made it to final recorded works in some instances. Oh, how I wish that, if there are more, Richard would let us hear them. He was a fan of the Beatles. He has been in the "fan" place - and I'm sure he is aware that "fans" would gratefully appreciate anything he threw at us, insofar as being able to hear Carpenters do music we have not heard before. On the other hand......I have to appreciate the fact, too, (and this has been mentioned already) that Rich is a perfectionist, and there are just some things he won't do. Perhaps releasing unpolished recordings is just one of those things. Who knows. It ain't over till its over, right? Pirate! Tim

Let's not begrudge him life's rewards for hard work well done. Just my thoughts. Rob My thoughts on what Rob has to say about Karen's unreleased solo songs. Please do not take what I have to say the wrong way - but I feel I must make my response Rob's post.
As for the songs not being associated with Richard does not make any difference in the fact that I like the songs.
If Karen did not approve the release of these songs. I wonder how many of the songs on "Lovelines" or "As Time Goes By" were actually approved by Karen. Quite possibly none of them were.
As you all know I am very protective of Karen's solo songs. First because I love her solo work tremendously. And second because Karen loved her solo work also. Originally the solo album was to be a double album and I'm sure Karen did want all those songs released - but somehow the brass at A&M decided it should be a single album.
On Richard's comment that Karen sang too high on some of the songs on the album. I respect Richard immensely and he's is very talented - but he's not the "be all end all" of the music industry. I have an excellent ear for pitch, range, tone and the mechanics of vocal interpretation. And for the most part on Karen's solo work she hits the high notes perfectly. Maybe on "Truly You", and "Still Crazy After All These Years" Karen does sing a bit too high for her natural range. But then again to be fair about it she sang a bit too high on some of the songs on "Made In America" - primarily "Because We Are In Love" - she hits a few notes that are just slightly off on that song. Though songs like "Guess I Just Lost My Head", "Making Love In The Afternoon", "If I Had You", "Love Making Love To You", "Lovelines", "Remember When Lovin' Took All Night", "Don't Try To Win Me Back Again", "Midnight", "Something's Missing" and several others Karen's vocals are right on the mark.
So this fan - raises a hand too vote for Karen's unreleased sessions to be released. Those songs are fantastic.
Now for the comment about not begrudging Richard anything, I agree. He (with Karen) has given us a lifetime of wonderful music and I will always be grateful.

I would love to hear those Karen solo songs. Also i was reading the booklet that came with the Essential Collection cd. On the description for the song "you'll love me" it says they formed a group "summerchimes" and got a deal on time at a new studio, United Audio. They recorded 9 songs and this version "you'll love me" recorded in 1967 is one of them. I wonder if they are going to release the other songs?

I am always up for more unreleased material. It could be a mixture like "Lovelines," with solo and Carpenters' work together. I am always hopeful....
