I am so happy that along with all the wonderful music Carpenters recorded they also filmed their television specials and many television appearances.
From their five specials what are your favorites skits or parts from you just love watching over and over again?
I'd have to say my favorite part of any of the specials is from the first special when Karen, Richard, John Denver, Victor Borge and the group perform "Close To You" in vaudeville style ala Spike Jones. They are hilarious. And they actually do an excellent job with the song. It's musically tight. I would love to see this song released on a future CD.

my favorite so far is the PBS special that Richard Carpenter co hosted in 2004 because that is how i learned about the Carpenters. The part that attracted me the first time i played the recording was the segment on "Superstar". I played the tape at work and one coworker said some of those songs gives him chicken skin because he has not heard them for so long.

Just to add a few more favorites. I really enjoyed the drum solos Karen did in the first special and also in "Music, Music, Music". she was terrific and looked like she really enjoyed performing these parts.
I also like the "Fun, Fun, Fun / Dancing In The Street" high school dance segment from "Space Encounters". Another part from "Space Encounters" that I really like is the performance of "Goofus", Karen really looks cute there.

Richard Carpenter did a fund raising show to help Public Broadcasting station raise money. They sold dvds for about $100, i did not pay attention to the exact titles. The host would ask questions to Richard, he would answer , then short 30 seconds clips of the Carpenters performing a song, probably exactly what is on the dvds. My vhs recording of this special did not come out good, the video blanks out, but audio is ok. I dont have cable. I remember they said if you buy the gold package you also get a dvd of this special too. I think the pbs website may have dvd for sale. i hope this helps.

Okay, let me just get this straight... Beth... You're talking about the 1997 PBS Special. I taped this one on PBS, then, bought it again a year later on VHS and DVD when it was for sale in regular music stores.
Makapip... Is this the one you're talking about too? Close To You : Remembering The Carpenters?

Just to add my two cents here. The only PBS Special I know about is the one Roland mentioned which is titled "Close To You: Remembering The Carpenters". This DVD can be found in most stores that sell DVD's or on any website that sells music and DVD's such as Amazon.com. This is very easy to find.
Note - the DVD does not have Richard being interviewed in between by the PBS commentators. It's just the documentary itself.
It usually sells for something between $12.00 to $25.00 depending on if you purchase a used copy or a brand new copy.

okay , i played the tape, this special is "Remembering the Carpenters". Lori Blasco is host, $90 contribution gets you singles cd, interviews with John Bettis, Herb Alpert, Gary Sims, Burt Bacharach,, Paul Williams. On the bottom of screen is pbshawaii.org, it is blurry. also later Greg Sherwood talks about contributions for pbs, $120 contribution gets a dvd or vhs of this program. for $250 gets a top of world cd, singles cd and this program. hope this helps

Makapip here's a link to Amazon.com's listing to the DVD. It costs considerably less through Amazon.com and it's the same exact DVD as offered through PBS.

8-)I also find watching Karen go to town on that drum kit, in the segment of remembering the carpenters, when they apperad on Your all American talent special. Performing Dancing In The Streets
You can just see her smile trying to hide her anxiety but when the music starts, she is flawless.
I know Richard has said that these specials will never be released in there entirety due to royalty issues and such but if he can provide segments of TV specials, then it seems to me the stars who worked with them would overlook these issues and view the bennefits of exposure, that may generate interest in there own record sales, many of these stars have faded into obscurity.
I still find it hard to believe that John Denver suffered with inner conflicts that led to the world losing another genius of music.
Entertainers really suffer as a result of public critisizm. If only people would realize that yes they are star celebrities but first just people like you and me. I think many lose site of this simple, unavoidable eqation. The man who walks in the shoes of others, realizes how much we are all like each other. no matter what life kind of life we are given.

Another favorite performance is from "Space Encounters" when Karen sings "Man Smart Woman Smarter" with Suzanne Somers.
