Much the same as the thread where you got to pick out what album cover you were on, or what you'd have done differently in the management of the Carpenters...my question to everyone is this.... If you could have worked with the group - either singing, playing, lights, hair, make-up, stage management, dance, etc., what role would you have liked to have played in their lives? For me, I would have loved to have been able to play drums with and sing with Karen, and perhaps a duet with Richard, both vocally and on the keyboards. Now, that would be awesome. And, if I were asked to do something right now in this day and time, I would hope to be able to contribute a vocal part on a Richard Carpenter album. I would give my eye-teeth, as they say, to be able to work with Richard in the studio. I wouldn't be so vain as to think I could do solo work, but being a background vocalist and overdubbing those rich harmonies that Richard is famous for arranging - well, that would really be a treat for me. How about you all? What would you have liked to have done? And, what would grab your fancy at the present? Looking forward to your responses. Tim

Choosing Karen's fashions, doing her hair and making her look SUPERB, HIP and CONTEMPORARY would have been my thing...
My thoughts, Cam

???Very interesting questions...I don't play any instrument nor sing very well, so I guess I'd like to have been in on behind the scenes....helping Karen with wardrobe, or just acting as a type of "water boy"...such as at games..providing water or food, or attending to last minute stage props. :)Just to have been able to help out in any small way with K. and R. would have been great....
As for these days, if I could work any where at their Performing Arts Center...selling tickets, or part of the clean up crew...I surely would! ::)Even though I realize that R. and K. surely were perfectionists and there were surely big problems they faced back then, I would have surely wanted to help in some way. I think it would be just so very grand grand and more grand ;Dto have worked with them. In fact, THEN and NoW...>>> I really think they needed someone who they could just be their normal selves, not the celebrities, to talk with and be friends with. I can't read or play music, but it would be such an honor just to know them. ;D ::)Or>>>><<<>>helping them come up with ideas for album covers....

Doing Karens beautiful mane of hair would be a cool job also an opportunity to know Karen better on a personal level. But a more enjoyable job would be as a member of the band drumming with Karen would be cool or playing Tony Polusos part as lead guitarist would be great as well as the odd vocal part like Doug Strawn(sp) did in some oldies Medleys that were performed live. As for working with Richard the intimidation factor would be such that I could not ever work with someone like Richard. Plus he is a perfectionist and very set in how he does things which would never work with my personality It would probably be the same for Karen had she lived.

What a very interesting topic Tim.
Since being on the road is not my cup of tea I would chose a job in the studio. Writing songs with Richard would suit me fine. I can write the music and lyrics or I can write lyrics for Richard to put music to and vice versa.
I can also see myself as a producer. The producer works with the budget in hiring musicians, caterers, renting studio time, organizes all the legal stuff and all the other things which make the recording process happen. Sometimes the producer has a hand in helping select or find the songs to be recorded.

Oh I definitely would have been one of the marketing guys. I was never happy with the way they were presented so I would have fought to get the album designs and pictures that would have elevated their image to be in line with the quality of the music.
Now, I'd like to work directly with Richard to come up with ideas and plans to expand Karen's legacy in the decades to come. I know he can be quite difficult, but I intensely admire his talent and values. Together we could ensure that the memory and appreciation of Karen will live way beyond our lifetimes.
I would make that one of my life's goals.

What great answers to this question. If we could all have a part in the Carpenter's camp, I think we could really make an impact. We could then have made them look wonderful - have added to their stage presence, their shows, their management, their production. It would have been a gas. And, now, we could not only have a great deal of fun working around Richard, but we also could continue making Karen's legacy stand out in front and be noticed, as it should be. I agree with each of you that there is work we could be doing, and boy, wouldn't we have a ball doing it? I just think it would be so much fun, and I'm like Rob - would dedicate myself to it wholeheartedly, given the chance to do so. Looking forward to hearing more from you all on this topic.

Tim I think we already are making an impact. Sites like this insure Karens legacy and memory live on. I feel we are doing all we can with our limited power to keep Karens legacy and memory alive. I hear where your coming from though one always feels or wishes they could or should do more but we must not forget what we have and are doing and we should be proud of that. Rob Richard is doing a great job with Karens legacy and has as much if not more passion for it than we do. You can work with him by writing him on his web site with any suggestions on how to better make Karens legacy last. This "wish" or "role" seems like it could be a reality even if you are not directly working with Richard. Hope I did not misread what you two were saying and I hope this makes sense to y'all just some thoughts on the whole legacy thing.

I think the perfectionism in both Karen and Richard would intimidate me too much to be comfortable working on the road with them. Plus, I can't sing or play an instrument. I think I would prefer to be working for the fan club. I would go out and see them on the road for a few days and ask them the fan's questions and then come back and keep the fan club informed. I am very organized, so I could make sure orders are correct and every fan is kept happy. Maybe be around for an input on a song or album cover....

Another job that may be interesting is being a personal assistant to Karen.

Enigma, I hear you loud and clear, and you're absolutely right - sites like this DO, I feel, have a significant impact in keeping Karen's legacy alive. I feel as if those on this website truly help to make her legacy come "alive" if you will, so couldn't agree with you more. And Moe, your idea would be super as well - working with KC and RC in any fashion would be a gift, in my opinion. just some additional thoughts. I agree with you both! Tim

I would have liked to have their personal assistant where I could get what they needed and make sure they were as comfortable as possible. If not that, part of the stage crew would have been fun.
Over the years as my voice began to create harmony, it would have really nice to be able to sing a tune with Karen......the ultimate!!!!

I would have loved to have worked with Richard in production. I can listen to a song over and over and never get tired of the repetition. I hope someday to work as an engineer but my only fear is that I am just way to stuck in the 70's and I just can't for the life of me find much to get jazzed about in what most people are into these days. I keep hoping that like fashion the style of the 70's returns as main stream. Brian Wilson songs are never left behind..

JIM Hi Jim, the good (great music) is still there you just have to look for it. It seems that most of what's on the charts right now is very disposable but believe there are some greats out right now. I like a vast variety of music but in the pop genre of the current day some of the best are Norah Jones, Diana Krall, Sarah Brightman, John Mayer, and Jack Johnson.

Hey Rick you are right, there is a lot of good music out there but you just have to go to XM or other alternative places to find it. I was telling Smoothie2 about Matt Bianco's new album featuring Basia, its very Carpenteresue. I think if Karen had lived, this is the type of material they would be doing. Daryl Hall and Jhon Oats have an album titled Our Kind Of Soul, with some great covers. She Used To Be My Girl and Me And Mrs Jones Wow!!
