Today, I just happened to be watching E! Entertainment Television, and a special was airing called E!'s Most Shocking Moments in Entertainment.
Imagine my surprise when they said "and now, our #30 moment...Karen Carpenter's Death from Anorexia Nervosa."
It was a very nice tribute to Karen (and Richard). They told about the Carpenters metioric rise to success - the fact that Karen had an unbelievable voice - that a doctor had put her on a diet to lose 20 pounds in 1969, and that she had gone to a gaunt 88 lbs, and then came back to better health, married, yet only to be found dead in her parent's home from heart failure due to complications of the disease."
They also showed some really great photos of both Karen and Richard, and there was some other nice commentary.
At number 26 or so, was the Ellen DeGeneres/Ann Heisch story - but the neat thing was, Ellen was quoted as saying something like "It's all about love - it's nice - like singing a Karen Carpenter song."
I couldn't believe 2 separate references to KC almost right in a row.
I was sad to think that Karen's death had to be a part of this particular show, but pleased to know that her death was shown here as having made quite an impact on the music world. Many, many tragedies came BEFORE Karen's death, and in the rankings, #30 was of relatively HIGH importance in this particular countdown.
I'm curious to know if anyone else has seen this, and what you thought about it.
Cheers! Tim

no, I don't think I saw that one, although, I think I saw some of most shocking I think in music...maybe the same thing, the one that stuck out in my mind, was when the singer Charlie Rich burned the announcement telling that J. Denver had won for I think Entertainer of the yr., but John was not there in person, they had a taped thing of him saying thanks and beaming from ear to ear of course not knowing what was going on. Charlie was more of the "old school" of country music, and did not like Denver's "crossover" sound. Of course knowing John as he was in public, had he been there....I don't think he would have made a scene....he may have just laughed it off...anyway, I may be getting that mixed up with the country music station show.... I do watch E! quite a bit...so maybe I'll catch the one you're talking about. Thanks for the info Tim. God, how I miss the C's as they were! ;D And, by the way, I do recall seeing when that happened on that awards show, AND was not too fond of C. Rich doing that. BUT I heard Charlie was a little tipsy at the time, AND.... I think Rich was a very talented guy, and still like his songs..(Hey, have you seen,) The Most Beautiful Girl in the World", "Behind Closed Doors"...

Hi Tim, thanks for posting this information. I'm going to check out the E!TV website to see if they're going to air this again. I definitely want to see it.
Yes, #30 is relatively high. A few years back on VH1's 100 Most Shocking Moments, Karen's death came in at around #80. E!TV's placing is much higher. Seems as time goes on Karen becomes more and more improtant in the history of popular entertainment.
