Hi All, I am giving this song another listen. Have not heard this song in months. Such a beautiful song. Hard to believe it was a work lead by Karen. She sings it effortlessly with such ease. This is another song tailored for Karen. I love her vocal inflections. I also love the violins in the background. It adds to the feeling. She sings with such power and passion. Her voice has a lilting feel to it. Her vocal is almost akin to a smokey reading. I love the chorus where her lead is doubled along with Richard adding his voice.
My thoughts, Cam

No doubt about it Cam this is a great discovery Richard made in his tape collection. Great vocal good arrangement and yes it is amazing that this was only a work lead wonder how it would have turned out had Karen officially recorded it for an album. This song put Barry Manilows version to shame. Yes I love thiis song!

Oh Cam you could not have chosen a better song to talk about. This is one of my most favorite of any Carpenters songs ever.
I love Richard's fantastic mid 90's power pop arrangement with guitar solo and emotive keyboards. and topping it all is Karen's rich and deep vocals.
I just love the "bloodhound" lyric. It's adds an edge to the song that is absent in Manilow's recording. His recording is definitely very good. But Carpenters is much more dark and soulful. And you just can't top Karen's vocals. Carpenters take this song into a complete different direction and I feel surpass any other recording of this song. In my mind their's is the definitive recording.
I rate this as one of Karen's finest vocal performances of her entire career.

Well Rick, I wouldn't say it quite like that...after all SOLITAIRE and AVE MARIA were her BEST performances...LOL...but TRYING TO GET THE FEELING AGAIN was one of the top ten gems she ever sang...
And she sang a dozen dozen of gems...
My thoughts, Cam PS. I like at 1:40/41 ...she says the word SENSATION...just a lovely quality to that word...

This is definitely an awesome song. The only way to improve it would be to have Karen's voice with Richard's doing the backgrounds. I remember how excited I was when I stumbled upon Interpretations in the Import section of a new music store. This song is such a stand out Carpenters' classic. I wish it would be featured in a comercial or movie so the public at large could hear it.

I think Richard says the Carpenter version is the way the song was originally written. I think the duo's version is better than Manilow's. Too bad it took until 1991 for it to be found on a master tape at A & M. Well at least we have this wonderful work lead version. I think Karen really nailed the original intent of this song.

I agree the Carpenters definitely nailed the original intent of this song. I really think the writers of this song meant it to be a dark deep soulful song with a little bit of a bite or maybe grit. And Carpenters certainly acheive that.
btw... Carpenters' recording is the original. Eventhough theirs was released years after Manilow's the Carpenters actually recorded the song atleast six to seven months before Manilow did. Same with "Can't Smile Without You" Carpenters recorded that song before Manilow also.
