Hi Everyone, A good song that Karen would have done wonders, almost tailor made for her, and one she would have fun with... FROM NEW YORK TO LA sung by Patsy Gallant. I can hear Karen singing this disco tune... Cam

Hi Cam! Thanks for the heads up. I did a search on Patsy Gallant only to find out she's been around since the mid-late 60's. First doing jingles for Ford Motor Company and McDonald's. Soon after she started recording her music. She's Canadian.
Anyway she's had several hits in Canda and UK. Her disco hit that you mentioned was accompanied by her own disco variety show "The Patsy Gallant Show". And even more interesting in 1993 she played the lead role in the French version of a biographical play about Edith Piaf. Edith Piaf has always been a favorite of mine.
Now I need to hear "From New York To LA" just to hear what you are talking about.

???My dream cover for Karen which is always changing but when I hear One Less Bell to Awnser by the 5th dimension. The pitch, phrasing and lyric make for an arrangment that Karen would have nailed and could have been a hit had the album been given a proper promotional treatment that of course in 80 might have been as many said a bad career move. However in 97 there was very little promotion for an album released so many years after her passing, i feel held the potentential to spark public interesrt due the unique nature of its material. I know the first time I played that album I was just blown away!
One more 5th dimension item. I think that Up Up and away would have been a great track for MIA.
Jim

Since Karen recorded with Billy Joel's band, I think she should have tried In A New York State Of Mind. I really like the lyrics to this song. Karen would have done such a wondnderful rendition of this. In fact, it could have been the title to her solo album. Everybody would have known that Karen was on her own of this album and that it would be different from the Carpenter sound.

NYSOM would have been a tremendous selection for Karen to have covered. It suits her to a "t".

NYSOM would have been a tremendous selection for Karen to have covered. It suits her to a "t". I have to agree here also. "New York State Of Mind" would have been an excellent choice for the solo album. They could have put a slight "smooth jazz" feel to it like they did with "Still Crazy After All These Years".
"Still Crazy..." I felt was one of the best musical arrangments on the solo album. What a great build up and mix of instruments.
And yes, "New York State Of Mind" would have been a great title for her solo album.
This makes me wonder if Karen, Phil Ramone and the gang even considered recording any Billy Joel songs. I would have still loved to hear Karen record "It's Still Rock And Roll To Me" - I really feel she could have done an outstanding job with it - something in the style of "Making Love In The Afternoon".

I would have liked Karen to cover the Louis Armstrong giant 'What A Wonderful World'.

I often hear songs that I imagine would have been great for Karen. Following the recent posts about Karen/Madonna, Madge's "Take A Bow" springs to mind. It could have been a massive hit for the Carpenters. I might be wrong but I think it was inspired by "I Need To Be In Love"....the line "the show is over, say goodbye" is almost identical in melody to "the price I've paid is high enough for me..."
Also Sheryl Crow's latest song "Always On Your Side" would have been ideal for Karen. Sheryl sings it in a very Karen-esque way, I feel.
I often wonder what Karen would have sounded like singing the sort of material her pal Olivia Newton John recorded on the "Physical" album - I feel that Karen's sparkling ability to sing upbeat tracks is often overlooked in favor of the more melancholy sound - had she branched away from Richard for good around the time of "Made In America", I reckon that's the direction she might have gone in.....who knows? How many times have we wondered what might have been, eh?
Best, Leo

For Karen's solo album...
As menitoned earlier - "It's Still Rock and Roll To Me (Billy Joel) Smooth Operator (Sade) The Best Is Yet To Come (Frank Sinatra) All You Do Is Dial (Heatwave - written by Rod Temperton)
The last song I listed was recorded by Heatwave - the group founded by Rod Temperton. Rod, as most of us know, composed most of the vocal arrangements Karen sang on her solo album. He also wrote a few of her solo songs. "All You Do Is Dial" is very similar to some of the smooth jazz grooves which take up a majority of her album.

"One Less Bell To Answer", - oh my, this would've been SUCH an amaaaazing song for Karen to have cut. I can't get this one our of my head now! It's as if I can hear the finished product, - oh gosh, Karen's voice and personality were perfect for this Bacharach/David gem. Kindest regards, magiclamp

Hi, MagicLamp; I hate to have to tell you that Jim passed away in January of this year. Rick put up a memorial page to him. We all miss him very much, but Karen has another friend to hang out with...

Hi, MagicLamp; I hate to have to tell you that Jim passed away in January of this year. Rick put up a memorial page to him. We all miss him very much, but Karen has another friend to hang out with... Hi Dave, I apologize to you, and to all here, for the loss of your friend, Jim. Being new to the board, and still not having had the chance to look at the many sections of posts, I was unaware of Jim's passing and of the enormous loss you've all suffered. I've lost several friends in the last few years, one of whom was a great fan of the Carpenters, and who like Karen, lost her battle to Anorexia Nervosa [at the age of only 29 yrs]. No matter one's age, or reason of passing, the loss of a friend is one which we never quite get over. My heart is with all of you, as you celebrate the friendship you shared with Jim, - and to his family and loved ones, may his memory always put a smile in your heart. G-d rest his soul. Sincerely, magiclamp

Jim was a wonderful person and I miss his contributions to the forum. Though, he's no longer with us in body - he is still very much alive in spirit.
Here are a few more songs which I feel would have fit well on Karen's solo album.
Most of these songs have a funky jazz feel to them as that's what it seems Karen was after with her solo album.
After The Love Has Gone (Earth Wind And Fire) Easy (Commodores) Feel Like Makin' Love - (Roberta Flack) Just The Two Of Us (Grover Washington Jr. and Bill Withers) What You Won't Do For Love (Bobby Caldwell) For Once In My Life (Stevie Wonder) How Deep Is Your Love (Bee Gees) I'm Every Woman (Chaka Khan) Colour My World (Chicago) You Belong To Me (Doobie Brothers, Carly Simon) I Keep Forgettin' (Michael McDonald) Got To Get You Into My Life (Beatles) Crimson and Clover (Tommy James and the Shondells, Joan Jett)

There are several songs that I'd love to hear on Karen's voice and style, among others:
Ngiculela-Es Una historia- I'm singing (Stevie Wonder)
Coming Around Again (Carly Simon)
How Deep Is Your Love (Bee Gees)
If Leaving Me Is Easy (Phil Collins)
I've Got You Under My Skin (Frank Sinatra)
regards

;DWonderful thread going on here...I agree with all these that have been mentioned. My mind is getting fuzzy w/ sleep., but I have thought of a few: "Til I Kissed 'Ya" (Everly Bros.) ........................................"DREAM, DREAM, DREAM (also Ev. Bros.) ........................................."CROCODILE ROCK" (Elton John) ...................................."CRAZY" (Patsy Cline) ......................................."JUST ANOTHER WOMAN IN LOVE" (Anne Murray) ..................................."YOU'RE THE ONE I LOVE" ( Shania Twain) ..................................."BLUE BAYOU" (L. Ronstadt) ................I may think of others also later. ::)yes, today I thought of another one: the old classic recorded over the yrs. by several artists I'm sure, but mostly I think of Peggy Lee's "FEVER" (OR YOU GIVE ME FEVER).... I feel this to be a perfect one for her solo album since she really went out of her way to show the other side of her...herself away from Richard...a beautiful sexy take charge kind of attitude..and Fever in its' day I'm sure was pretty risque (sp?) but will always be a real heatwave of a song ... ....

Here's a couple I think Karen could have done well...I think some of these were listed on a "jazz" concept album we'd discussed at one point, nevertheless: Round Midnight - Theloneous Monk - This is a dark, brooding number, but our Karen could have pulled it off without any trouble whatsoever. Love this beautiful, haunting tune. Cry Me A River - several artists have done this one, but I can sure hear Karen sing this tune. It's another sort of sultry jazz tune that Karen could have pulled-off so incredibly well. My Life - Billy Joel. "Keep it to yourself, it's My Life..." I could hear Karen on this one easily like some of the more upbeat rockin' tunes on her solo CD - She'd have torn this one up!!! If I Only Had The Words - another Joel tune. Beautiful song - Karen would have lended her incredibly achy touch to this one and brought it to life. And So It Goes - my final Joel selection. It's a lovely number - again, sort of dark, but not too much so. It just seems Karen could read this one with lots of savvy. Interesting choices from everyone. And...yes, Jim is ALWAYS being thought of as I post and read through your posts, everyone. He loved this forum, and he loved the Carpenters. He lives on, here. Tim
