First of all, I would have to say that Merry Christmas Darling is my most favorite Carpenters Christmas song even though I like 'em all a lot.
About MCD, when I hear this song like in a store or at work or some place where a lot of people are, the song gives me a good feeling;
HOWEVER
when I'm alone at home, especially during the hours of darkness, especially in cold weather, and I hear Karen performing Merry Christmas Darling I'm overcome by feelings of extreme loneliness (did I mention EXTREME?). Especially if it's just after Christmas which for me is a sad time, it's like the climax of the holiday season is over, as the song states "... the Christmas rush is through". I can hardly bear listening to "Merry Christmas Darling" under those conditions.
As I've said, in the car or in a public place, no problem; but at home it's a hangup. That's when I have to immediately chase it down with Sleigh Ride or Jingle Bells, etc.
Anyone else know what I mean?

Yes Mistercoffee, I know exactly what you mean. Like you, in public, the song is just a great Christmas song. Alone, at certain times, if I really listen to the words and Karen's voice, it makes me very sad. The Christmas season can do that anyway, but couple it with that song and yeah, it gets to me. I love the song though.
