In terms of the voice - unique and clear and idenfitiable - Its hard to pinpoint that to today's sounds - because i think music is in a horrible place right now -
But if i had to choose - somebody who is in the same league as Karen (nobody is better) - i would choose Amy Winehouse- she has pipes and she can bring it
Sadly, Amy is even more self-destrutive than KC ever was
I'd loved to see Amy Winehouse work with Richard Carpenter, Burt Bacharach, and of course with Hal Blaine -
Those who never heard of Amy - she's great
Dead singers - i think Dinah Washington, Laura Nyro, and Billie Holliday were in the same league as KC

This is a very interesting topic - and I was really really surprised to read of Amy as the "new Karen Carpenter"..
I love Amy Winehouse, let's say I love her music - her album Back to Black is the best album of the last years I guess - every single song is perfect in every way. But I have to say that I love Amy for different reasons than Karen - like Rick said her voice is far away from the quality of Karens voice.
I'm interested in other suggestions because I can't think of any artist right now..
Again, I'm kind of surprised about your liking for t.a.T.U - I think I'll have to listen to their music again.

Karen Carpenter would never ruin peoples holidays in a posh hotel by crawling over to peoples tables blind drunk asking for drinks & swearing also asking people to let her join them in their rooms for a little bit of "hows your father etc" especially covered in tattoos & wearing the revolting rags she had worn all week... Amy sings in one distinction of voice which is the same tired ole gangstar dont be a hero drawl that grates on you after a few mins....Im sorry my opinion but only 2 other singers have any type of voice to match Karen & they are Donna Summer & Barbra Striesand

this was a mistake on my part and let me explain. I love Amy Winehouse - i love her voice, i love her music, and i think she is a true original in today's wasteland of music -
However - there is Karen Carpenter and no one else - no one can replicate her voice!! So, its futile to even try -
Amy is somebody who makes me stand-up and listen. Her self destructive tendencies and her addiction to drugs and self-attention is disgusting to see - Her raw talent is incredible -
Karen Carpenter was a giant - I put her up there with the greatest of all time : Frank Sinatra, Ray Charles,Dinah Washington, Billie Holliday.
So there you have it - My mistake was putting Amy anywhere near KC - and for that i was wrong

I find Amy to be an OK artist and have alot against her demeaner and the way she presents herself but its ok if some people love Amy and her voice/music but she is far from Karen in demeanor presentation and voice Amy is a completely different artist than Karen. Just my opinion kc1950 don't want to gang up on you or anything.

Tim, I'm waiting for the day in 2039, when you will get to appreciate Amy's music - please, let me know!! ; ) It's not that I want to win round anybody or so, I just want to tell you why I love her music. When I talk about "her music" I think of the songs she produced together with Mark Ronson, who is an excellent producer, I think. I don't care that much about her first album "Frank" - it's a good, really jazzy album - nothing more nothing less.. My favourite song on "Frank" is the Bossa Nova-esque "Cherry".. www.youtube.com/watch?v=weSWHT93sLoHer second album "Back to Black" that she produced together with Mark Ronson is one of my all-time favourites.. I heard the song "Rehab" one night and it was "love at first sight", the next day I went out to buy her album, without knowing anything about her.. Since then (2006) I listen to this album regularly without skipping one single song.. Even though the album is very short ( ca 35 min), I just don't get tired of it and listen to it again and again.. It's not that much about the quality of her voice - it's just the mixture of the great instrumentals and Amy's expression. From the beginning I felt like the style of this album was made perfectly for me (not only for me as I know today).. It's hard for me to name one favourite of the album.. Love is a losing game www.youtube.com/watch?v=GfC6CCtZjxkMe and Mr. Jones www.youtube.com/watch?v=SEM8DuubngASince I've listened to Amy's music for the first time I had high expectations.. I don't know how to explain, but I just felt like there was much to come from this person. Today I know that this is not assured.. One last word concerning Mark Ronson, who has an high impact on Amy and her music. I just love how he arranges the wind in his songs, not only Amy's songs.. He released an album called "Version" featuring many great artists.. My favourite on this excellent album feat. Paul Smith (Maimo Park) - Apply some pressure www.youtube.com/watch?v=7tAKUIqGhI4

Have you guys listened to this girl called Rumer, she's very new, doesn't have an album yet. Lots of people have been comparing her with Karen, She is Karens biggest fan.
She has been working with John Bettis and Burt Bacharach.
Look her up on youtube her first single is called "Slow".

Rumer reminds me more of Norah Jones than Karen Carpenter, though I must admit I do like her music.

yep, wow, how do we always seem to pick these things? I bet nobody has even looked at this thread in a while & we both knew Amy would be dead soon. Friday, Jul 29 2011 6PM 17°C 9PM 14°C Amy Winehouse, 27, found dead at her London flat after suspected 'drug overdose' Amy Winehouse has been found dead at her home in London. The Back To Black singer was found at the property by emergency services at 3.54pm, and it's believed Winehouse's death was due to a suspected drug overdose. Winehouse was apparently 'beyond help' when paramedics arrived, according to Sky sources. Sources have also claimed Winehouse's death was due to a drug overdose Two ambulance crews arrived at the scene within five minutes and a paramedic on a bicycle also attended, according to a spokeswoman. 'Sadly the patient had died,' she added. A statement from Winehouse's U.S. record label read: 'We are deeply saddened at the sudden loss of such a gifted musician, artist and performer. 'Our prayers go out to Amy's family, friends and fans at this difficult time.' In a statement, the Metropolitan Police said: 'Police were called by London Ambulance Service to an address in Camden Square NW1 shortly before 16.05hrs today, Saturday 23 July, following reports of a woman found deceased. 'On arrival officers found the body of a 27-year-old female who was pronounced dead at the scene. 'Enquiries continue into the circumstances of the death. At this early stage it is being treated as unexplained.’ A Metropolitan Police spokesperson said in a press conference this evening that no cause of death had yet been confirmed. He said: 'I am aware of reports of a suspected drugs overdose, but I would like to reremphaise that no post-mortem has yet taken place and it would be inapproporaite to speculate on the cause of death. 'The death of any person is a sad time of friends and family especially for someone known nationally and internationally like Amy Winehouse. My sympathy extends not only to her family but also to her millions of fans across the world.' A spokesman for the late singer said: 'Everyone involved with Amy is shocked and devastated. AMY WINEHOUSE - THE LATEST MEMBER OF THE '27 CLUB'The singer's tragic death at the age of 27 puts her in a pantheon of famous musicians who have all died at the same age. Amy follows now joins the notorious 27 Club, also known as Forever 27, which is a group of musicians who have all died at the age while struggling to cope with fame. Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain was the most recent victim and in 1994, pumped with heroin and valium, he turned a gun on himself. Decades earlier Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison and Brian Jones all died at 27. Rolling Stone Jones drowned in a swimming pool in 1969; Hendrix choked to death in 1970 after mixing wine with sleeping pills and singer Janis Joplin suffered a suspected heroin overdose the same year. Doors star Morrison died of heart failure in 1971. www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-2018020/Amy-Winehouse-dead-London-flat-drug-overdose.html
