Back in L.A. Karen is meeting with Herb Alpert to talk about her solo album. Originally they were going to meet at an out of the way cafe in Santa Monica. Though Herb's schedule changed and they ended up meeting at his office at A&M Records.
Karen sat comfortably in Herb's office as she waited for him. He was uncharacteristically late.
"Karen, how are you?" Herb asked warmly as he walked into the office. "I am so sorry. I hope you didn't have to wait to long."
"No, problem Herb. I only waited about five minutes"
"Can I get you something to drink?" Herb offered.
"Um oh, sure" Karen hesitated, "Yeah how about an iced tea."
Herb walked over to the refrigerator in his office which sat behind a fully stocked bar.
"You know Karen I always keep a fresh pitcher of iced tea just for you. I know it's your favorite".
Karen giggled and smiled and bashfully batted her big brown eyes.
"Oh you're too sweet. You're gonna spoil me Herb."
"You're worth spoiling", Herb quickly responded.
"Karen, let's talk about your solo album," Herb continues speaking, "I have a someone in mind to produce it for you."
"Well Herb," Karen comments authoritatively, "I have someone in mind myself."
"You do? Go on Karen." Herb commented with a surprised look on his face.
"Herb, I want Phil Ramone to handle the business for my album. He's done an excellent job with Barbra Streisand on her last album. He's very thorough and is an excellent business man. I'm especially impressed with the publicity campaign he put together for Billy Joel's "52nd Street" album. You know that album is #1 right now."
Herb sat there in his chair contemplating what Karen just said.
"Hmmm..." Herb gestures, "Well Karen, he lightly tugs his earlobe, "You know, I can see it. I like Phil too. Okay, you've sold me. I'll call Phil and set up a meeting."
Karen stands up and walks toward the window with her iced tea in hand.
"Herb," she looks at him with her sparkling brown eyes, "I thought I'd call him myself." This is my project. I want it to be all me for a change. I want to call the shots."
"Well Karen," Herb responds, "You know A&M is financing this album."
"Herb," Karen pleads, "If I can't do this my way it won't be worth it. I'll just be going through the motions."
"Okay, okay Karen it's you. This is your album you can contact Phil. I'll have Joan get the number for you."
Karen now smiling lilt-fully says, "No need I already have his number."
"Looks like you've got all bases covered Karen. Time to hit a home run now," Herb says with a sense of humor in his voice.
