Sometimes not often enough. We reflect upon the good things......U Know the song. A few more complimation LPs followed & as I write this its march 2005 & the Cs are still in the top 75 UK charts with Gold Greatest hits.. a rather badly thought up planned hits album with fillers instead of hits on it. Im not wasting my time with A & M any more with their choice of songs included as Im just glad that the Cs are in the charts again. A while ago when the weather was good my partner & I went to that little part in the country where I was born, where so long ago & far away I walked with my mate & his dog listening to his radio..... my mates not the dogs by the way. Its been 30 years but the field is still there & the woods to one side but the cows have long since gone & with it the little country lane . It was a beautiful sunny day & all was quiet. There was no skylarks singing in the sky either rather sad really, all built on. The old styfence that I sat on listening to Sha La La La all those years ago was still there tho & I stopped & remembered & was transported back & you know? Im certain that through the breeze I could almost hear the music to that beautiful song I once heard that started my love of Cs music.... Well there You have it its all done now. Ive done some things Im not proud of & done some things that were pretty dumb & stupid but Id do em all again if I could because with it it bought a legacy that is irreplaceable in my life. Richard & Karen Carpenter. The Carpenters!

Hello Ken (Carps1000)! Thanks for sharing your interesting story. A lot of great insights. I must say though that I don't agree with your comment of "Gold" being "badly thought up". There is not one filler cut on it. Every song is quality and the best of what the Carpenters recorded. Granted not every song on the compilation was a single or hit. But there's already more than enough compilations with all hits on them. I think "Gold" is a great set because the hits are there along with lesser known gems. This way the new fan gets the chance to discover songs they did know before instead of just having the hits. I feel Richard made excellent choices of songs to include on this set.

Hi Rick. Thanx for your feedback. I am sorry if I caused offence about the "Fillers" quote regarding Gold. I also didnt realise Richard thought out the track listing on this album. I assumed A & M did. I still stand by what I said tho. Over in the UK We have had Only Yest: Love Songs: Interpretations: Gold: Gold Reissued 2005. All of these albums have had basically the same listings give or take 1 or 2 songs only juggled around a bit. The Only decent "Hits" album was apart from 69-73 & 74-78 was "Yesterday Once More" as this album included Hush/Good old Dreams & a few more. Theres a kind of hush was No 22 over here & 12 in U S A so was mega hit in my view so why does is it not get included on hardly any "Hits albums?? Carps at their best that song was. A couple of good Carps addicts of mine are of the same opinion that keep releasing the same stuff over again is rather naughty & also does the non Carps fan no favours in furthering their appreciation of the Carps other songs. It is not fair on the loyal fan either & reeks of "Innit fer the money pal" Something that Karen would of never had wanted for her fans nor would of allowed. I do feel sometimes Richard or A&M treat the fans with slightly less grace than they deserve & especially the ones who NEVER deserted them & who are still life long fans. Please forgive my impertinence its just the way I see things sometimes.........dont ban me from here.....pretty please!! Regards Ken

"Gold" is a very nice collection of hits and album tracks. I would have made some different choices, like including "Now" instead of "Your Baby...", but there's really nothing major to quibble about. "Gold" is a much better compilation than "Yesterday Once More," IMO. What's great about it is that it's a wonderful introduction to the Carpenters for younger folks just discovering them.

$% Ken - your stories were amazing. I could clearly picture you in the bank with your passbook for the first withdrawl to get that single. How great that story is. And now - still a devoted fan. Just doesn't get any better than that! Karen and Richard's recordings are a good listen on any given day. Always a treasure. I look forward to your input on more posts. ~Best, Tim @@

Ken, in rereading your entire story this brought back many memories for me in my life with the music of the Carpenters. One of my fondest memories was in December 1974 (just before Christmas vacation break). I was in my first year of high school, age 14 - soon to be 15. We were sitting outside on the phys ed bleachers. This guy walked by with a big "ghetto blaster" (as they called it back then - I grew up in Santa Ana, California). And "Please Mr. Postman" was blasting away out of his speakers. It was a bright sunny day. This was only the second time I heard the song. But I just knew right then and there that this song was going to reach #1. Sure enough a few weeks later the song was #1 and was played like crazy almost the entire year of 1975. What a great song.

Hi Tim. ( Yesterday Once More) I ll never forget that 1st time in the bank either as I really was worried & guilty as hell & I forgot to mention I DID get caught by my mum to wards the end as one withdrawal of funds ended I turned to see mum standing at the end of the Q ( Yep we always Q in the UK ..even then) & she had a face on her that would have turned you to stone....I owned up...When you are young sometimes you do somethings that are really outrageous. I shudder some times at myself, but at least have grown up an awful lot since then. Thanx 4 your comments of my offerings & yep I will be contributing more things in the future..so be warned ( I can hear Rick groaning). This Website iis fantastic. Ken (Carps 1000)
