Michelle was the ugliest girl in the entire school ( I know boo hiss shame on me) she resembled the elephant man & stunk & Im sorry to say that I was shallow enough to agree with the others but there was one thing...she was a fellow carps addict & up until then I darent let any one know that I too was one as Id of got beaten up yes its a sorry state of affairs when you get victimised on your choice of music & as I write this I realise just how awful I was as a kid to some people but then arent most kids any way some how she found out about my Carps addiction & one day in class she quietly put this book she had called Carpenters Special Souveneir in my desk. I was so grateful & humble I sat with her for the rest of term ignoring the threats from other kids & well we became good friends till I left school... She also took me to a little known record store in another town where they had an archive of all the old Cs singles & where I spent hours sitting on the floor there deciding which singles to buy now & which later..untill the owners got fed up with me threatened to throw me out..It was Michelle who told me when I got angry as to why I couldnt get for the life of me the For All We Know single & why it was on the B Side of Superstar.."Some singles are only released in the U S A & not over here or with different b sides" she said quitely one day when I was ranting yet again. I have never been nasty to anyone else since unless they have started it 1st. This was the 1st time I realised that to like the Cs wasnt cool & so I never told any one who I loved as a singer. I left School & was employed but the week Passge came out i went into the store & bought 4 copies of the LP & took em to work & displayed them on my desk confused as to why no nasty comment was made by my older workmates. Singles 74 - 78 & the Xmas Lp followed & I was back to scanning the charts with baited breath. I had also made a friend with a girl who worked in the P & P at A & M in London who was like Gold to me telling me of all future releases so I could go & order ASAP. She sent me a demo record Xmas Song which I promptly wore out & have regretted it to this day for not taking greater care of it. Then Came the gap.. Nothing new from Cs. I moved house to live by the coast made new friends & one day I spotted an article in the news advertising "Touch me When were dancing" I rang A & M in London & "My friend no longer worked there & they had no Idea about the new release to which I repiled that ID send em a cutting of the new release & also a job application to work there as they obviously didnt know their job...I ended up talking to a ring tone. Made in Am hit our no 12 spot & I was back on form in my jublilation. I managed to get hold of a cardboard cut out of the LPs cover & made my best mate drive all around the place with it fastened to the roof of his 1st old banger, closely followed by the men in white coats & straight Jackets. I made a good friend of the owner of the local record store who 9 outta 10 times had me banging on the doors to get him to reopen so as I could order the latest release or to have a go about not giving the window space to the new Lps when the arrived...& I got a way with it....BIG Bloke He was too. Then came the phone call at 10pm on that awful night. It was february 4th 1983.
