As I was listening to the car radio this morning and heard Brother Louie by the Stores, it occurred to me that there are so many One Hit Wonders out there.
A few of my favorites from the 70's are:
Precious and Few by Climax Spirit in the Sky by Norman Greenbaum Heaven on the 7th Floor by Paul Nicholas Playground in my Mind by Clint Holmes
What are some of your favorites from any period of time?

$? Wow, there are tons of great one hit wonders. starting out with "Brother Louie" by Stories. This is such a great #1 hit from 1973. You'd think as good as this song was that these guys could have come up with another hit. Here's a few other one hit wonders I like: "Smiling Faces Sometimes" - Undisputed Truth 1971 "Cars" - Gary Numan 1979 "Expreessway To Your Heart" - Soul Survivors 1967 "Please Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" - Santa Esmeralda 1977 "Don't Leave Me This Way" - Thelma Houston 1976 "Lovin' You" - Minnie Riperton 1975 "Run For Home" - Lindisfarne 1978 "Pilot Of The Airwaves - Charlie Dore 1979/80 "Captain Of Her Heart" - Double 1986 "Pop Muzik" - M 1979 "Funky Town" - Lipps Inc 1980 "Driver's Seat" - Sniff N The Tears 1979 "Got To Be Real" - Cheryl Lynn 1978 ( note - Cheryl Lynn did have a semi hit in 1979 with "Star Love" - the song reached #62 on the charts.) Technically Jimi Hendrix is a one hit wonder in the U.s. reaching the top forty only once in 1968 with "All Along The Watchtower" - it reached #20. Hendrix did make the top 100 U.S. singles chart a total of seven times. His second best showing was with "Crosstown Traffic" reaching #52 in 1968.

Each song was a big favorite for me at one time or another. Janis Ian is the correct name.

Actually, a couple of these are two-hit wonders...Climax also sang a ditty called "Life and Breath", and Gary Wright had a couple of more top 40 tunes, mainly "My Love Is Alive" from the same glorious album, "Dreamweaver."
But, let us not all forget Mouth and McNeil's "How Do You Do" and The Bells' "Stay Awhile." (I didn't read all the postings...these two just immediately came to mind!)
This is a very fun forum...thanks to all who conceived and who participate! What better way to spend a Saturday night!!!

This is a very fun forum...thanks to all who conceived and who participate! What better way to spend a Saturday night!!! Hi boxboypab, welcome to the forum! We can take Gary Wright one step further. He was a three hit wonder. In 1976 he had two hits; "Dream Weaver" and "Love Is Alive" and in 1981 he reached the top twenty with "Really Wanna Know You". Enigma I love Starbuck's "Moonlight Feels Right". I love the marimba in that song. They had two other songs I liked. A song called "I Got to Know" which reached #43 in 1976 and sounded quite a bit like "Moonlight". and they had one called "Everybody Be Dancin' which made it to #38 in 1977. Although they made the top 40 twice "Moonlight" is really their one hit. Afew more one hit wonders to add to the list: "Jackie Blue" by Ozark Mountain Daredevils "Sky High" - Jigsaw "Love Hurts" by Nazareth "Chevy Van" by Sammy Johns "Jeans On" by David Dundas "I Can Help" by Billy Swann Does anybody remember the semi hit of 1977 "Ariel" by Dean Friedman?

Does anybody remember the semi hit of 1977 "Ariel" by Dean Friedman? What a coincidence Rick I was just listeneing to that one yesterday its on a 70's compilation record from K-tel that I have a nice song but not one I listen to all that often. I gonna rack my brain and come back with a few more additions to the one hit wonder list that I like.

Hi All!
I even have the Gary Wright CD with "Really Wanna Know You", as well as most, if not all of his others, albeit on vinyl. With nothing better to do, I also reminisced my tainted youth by recalling, in no particular order:
"One Toke Over the Line" -- Brewer and Shipley "Sweet Mary" -- Wadsworth Mansion "Ring" -- Cymmaron (I am sure misspelled) "Signs" -- Five Man Electrical Band "Toast and Marmalade for Tea" (can't recall artist) "Billy Don't Be a Hero" -- Bo Donelson & the Heywoods (?) "Shannon" -- Henry Gross "Timothy" -- ? (supposedly about cannibalization?...it is very late, and I must soon retire.)
I could go on...why is it that one can recall trivia like this, but can't remember what one ate for breakfast?
If anybody is into Three Dog Night, the CDs with two of the three top dogs (Wells and Hutton) and the London Symphony is very entertaining, as is Chuck Negron's Live CD of a couple years back...I believe both these are imports...I should know this since I have them, but again, I can't recall!!
Again, lotsa fun!!

hi everybody..and welcome boxboy!...Lotta great music that's been mentioned..and many I didn't know to be one-hit wonders. I think somewhere on another thread maybe, that David Soul's "Don't Give Up on Us Baby" was also a hit but he may have had another .. I recall one called "Last Song" by Edward Bear(?) in the early 70's...I really liked that, but don't know if that was his only one. I do love Dream Weaver ..and I surely had forgotten about "Moonlight Feels Right".. I like that synthesizer part... and how about one called "Dead Skunk in the Middle of the Road" by I don't know who...(yes, it was a song) How bout "I'll Give You a Daisy a Day"...by Ed Strunk... just my stray thoughts smoothie

Hi!
I actually saw Starbuck perform in concert (how many of them could there have been?) at Lambuth College in Jackson, TN, way, way back in the mid 70s, probably 1975 (or 6); I got a personally-autographed photo of all the band members (save one who was on a beer run after the concert)...I have since misplaced the picture. There were all of about 200 wild screaming college and high school types on the Lambuth College gymnasium floor to here live versions of the hit(s). I don't believe there was an opening act!!

The 70's had a fairly wide spectrum of genres on the top 40 hits, including soft rock, country, soul and R&B. Some of my favorite one-hit wonders from that era are:
Al Wilson - Show and Tell Babys - Everytime I Think of You Bellamy Brothers - Let Your Love Flow Blackbyrds - Walking in Rhythm Brothers Johnson - Strawberry Letter No. 22 Climax - Precious and Few Cornelius Brother and Sister Rose - Too Late to Turn Back Now Gilbert O'Sullivan - Alone Again (Naturally) LeBlanc & Carr - Falling Maria Muldaur - Midnight at the Oasis Skylark - Wildflower Stampeders - Sweet City Woman Starbucks - Moonlight Feels Right Three Degrees - When Will I See You Again William de Vaughn - Be Thankful for What You've Got
Some of these singers might have had other minor hits as well, but these songs stood out the most for me.
