Chapter Fifteen
Karen sat in her gynecologist’s office two months after her wedding to Nathan. She didn’t want to believe she was pregnant, but she was over a month late for her period.
There was only one night in question for Karen. She and Nathan had been out to dinner and they’d both had a bit too much to drink. When the couple had returned home they had fallen to bed. Nathan had come on strong and Karen hadn’t had a chance to insert her diaphragm, and in her drunken state of mind she figured it was a one in a million chance that she would conceive.
Now, Karen sat across from Dr. Drew Nelson. He’d had Karen for a patient since she was twenty-three, she had been referred to him by her family doctor to be fitted for a diaphragm. He read the chart in front of him and then looked up at his patient.
“ There is no doubt Mrs. Yates. You are almost seven weeks along.”
Karen’s mouth dropped open and then she covered her face with her hands
“ My God. When is it due?”
“ I would say sometime in October. I take it by your reaction that this was not a planned pregnancy?”
Karen looked up at her doctor with a look of fright in eyes.
“ No it wasn’t. God, Nathan and I wanted to wait for a few years before having children. He’s not going to take this very well.”
Dr. Nelson had seen this before in his patients, he leaned forward on his elbows and said gently.
“ If you like Karen, you still have time to terminate this pregnancy, and your husband will be none the wiser. It’s your choice. However I would strongly advise against such action. With your medical history and your recent heart failure, you may not be able to have children later. Your thirty-five now. You don’t have much time left.”
“ Thank you Doctor. I will talk it over with my husband and family.” Karen stood up and left.

It was just after dinner when Karen finally drove home to the condo. The nanny that she and Nathan had hired help look after Christopher had her jacket on and was sitting at the dining room table.
“ Andrea, I’m so sorry for making you wait so long. I needed a little time to myself.” Karen said breathlessly as she opened the door. “ I will make sure that your paid for the over-time.”
“ It’s quite alright Mrs. Yates. I understand. I was able to get my sitter to stay for an extra few hours.” Andrea said as she gathered up her things. She was a rather tall woman with blonde hair that she always kept up in a bun. She wore conservative clothes that boarded on a uniform in appearance her saving quality was her warm personality. At the door she said.
“ Christopher has had his dinner and bath. He is currently watching TV in his room. Have a good night.” And she was gone for the evening.
Karen went to the kitchen and opened fridge door. Her mouth was dry. She took out the ever-present jug of iced tea and after retrieving a large glass from the cupboard she poured. Sipping it, she walked to the living room.
Karen sat on the end of the U-shaped couch and glanced at her watch.
6:50pm it read. Nathan was due home in about ten minutes. She sipped her iced tea again and then started to think about what to have for dinner. Karen had just decided on shake and bake chicken with potatoes and green beans. When her husband came through the front door.
He set his briefcase on the dining table and then slipped off his shoes and jacket.
“ Karen, I’m home.” He called out loudly, then he saw his wife sitting waiting for him. He walked over to the sofa and sat down, kissing Karen on the cheek.
“ How was your day?” Karen asked as she normally did.
“ It was uneventful, just a basic day in the life of a doctor. Nothing out of the ordinary.” Nathan leaded back on the couch and put is feet up on the coffee table. He then asked.
