Chapter Twelve
Summer 1984.
Karen sat in the living room of her condo with Rosie. The two women where looking over bridal magazines and samples of cloth for Karen’s wedding dress.
“ I was thinking of going with something simple but classic. Nothing over the top.” Karen said as she remembered back to her wedding to Tom. She didn’t want to have to fight with her dress the way she did the last time. No, this time all she wanted a short white skirt with a white blazer, She’d have white panty hose and white high-heeled shoes too; Karen had opted to not wear a veil instead she would be wearing a tiara. The brides maid’s where doing to be in baby blue and white satin. The only thing that was the same as her last wedding was Karen’s choice of flowers, lilies of the valley and babies breath.
“ Karen the wedding is going to be wonderful. I’m so happy for you and Dr. Yates. He’s a fine man.” Rosie smiled as she started to gather the up the mess that the two of them had made.
Karen smiled as she went into the kitchen. She took a glass out of the dish rack and opened the fridge. She poured herself some iced tea and then closed the door with a nudge of her hip.
“ Karen, I’m home.” Nathan called from the front door.
Karen looked up at the clock. 1:15pm he was home very early indeed. She walked into the living room and watched as Nathan kicked off his shoes. When she saw his face she knew something was terribly wrong.
“ Nathan what’s the matter?” Karen asked with alarmed concern.
“ It’s Jennifer. I got a call from her this morning at my office. She went to her doctors for a routine check up and during her breast exam he found a lump, he thinks it could be cancerous.” Nathan said in a distant tone.
For a moment Karen was to bewildered to speak. She led Nathan over to the sofa and both sat heavily.
“ What about Christopher. Does he know about this yet?”
“ Jennifer has not said anything to him yet she wants to go for the biopsy first. When they know if it’s terminal or can be treated then she will tell Chris.” Nathan sighed and then said. “ Jennifer has asked if we’d take Chris for the next few months.”
Karen agreed without hesitation.

Karen and Nathan managed to get on the red-eye to the East Coast that night. They arrived at four in the morning, because of the early hour the airport was deserted and for once Karen didn’t have to deal with a mob of fans. In the terminal Jennifer was waiting for them. She’d left Christopher at home with a sitter.
When Nathan and Karen met at the arrival gate she was not her normal distant self. This time she was relieved to have someone there for her. She hugged Nathan and then greeted Karen warmly.
“ Nathan, you and Karen are welcome to stay in my guest room for as long as you’re here. I won’t hear of you staying a hotel.” Jennifer said as Nathan gathered the luggage.
“ Thank you, Jennifer. When are you supposed to go for your biopsy?” Karen asked.
“ Three days. I’d like it if you would have Chris out of town before then. I don’t want him knowing that I might have cancer until it’s for sure.” Jennifer led the way to the parking lot and out to her Ford Tempo.

The following morning Christopher was so happy to see his father and Karen, and for the next few days, Nathan, Karen and the boy visited the local Water Park and the zoo. At the Water Park someone recognized Karen so she was swamped with requests for autographs while Nathan and Chris enjoyed themselves on the water slides and in the wave pool.
The trip to the zoo was much better for Karen she was able to spend time with her fiancé and future stepson without being harassed by fans. She held on to Chris’s hand as they went from one cage to another. They enjoyed having ice cream cones while watching the whales and dolphins at the marina. And Karen laughed along with Nathan when one of the whales kissed Chris’s cheek.
When it was time to head back to California. All three where ready. At the airport Jennifer said a long goodbye to her son. She was tearful as she watched Nathan and Karen walking with Christopher through the boarding gates.
