For me, it would be a few...SOLITAIRE. It is just filled with such sadness. I CAN'T MAKE MUSIC is another song filled with Sadness. CRESCENT NOON, ANOTHER SONG, SOMEDAY, MAYBE IT'S YOU, A PLACE TO HIDEAWAY, WHERE DO I GO FROM HERE? are some wonderfully sad songs. Karen was so gifted at recording sad songs. Another one is WHEN IT'S GONE and AT THE END OF A SONG are other ones as well that fall in that category. There was obviously something in Karen that she was able to convey into a song...some sort of truth, she might not have been really aware of. What a marvelous talent she had though...
My thoughts, Cameron

Solitaire is my sad song. Superstar is also kind of downbeat.

I think Rainy Days and Crescent Noon would be the two saddest. Crescent Noon was holds mostly all depressing feelings with little or no hope. Rainy Days at least has a positive note in that she has "someone to run to and someone loves me".

"Rainy Days," "Goodbye to Love," "Solitaire," "You're Baby Doesn't Love you Anymore." I would have to add "Now" to the list, simply because it was the last song Karen recorded. That makes it sad for me!
Take care-

I Need To Be In Love is a song about loneliness - I think this one fall into the "sad" category.

Yeap, I would say "I need to be in love" too cause surely there must be reason why Karen chosed it to be her favourite Carp's song.Perhaps the song strike so fittingly with what was in her heart and she tried conveying and connecting it wholeheartedly in the song?
Another particular song would be "I have you".This song has such a melancholic feel to it one can't help but feel the the sadness in her voice( particularly Karen's shivering voice at the end) and somehow personally this song sounds like it has some "mysterious sadness" to it..

"I Can't Make Music" ... Love the way it builds at the end. And love the composer Randy Edelman in general. I think they should have also covered his song Pistol Packin' Melody that was a minor hit for Randy in '74 or so. That would've been a great song for the Carpenter's, a very powerful pop tune and a divergence from what K&R generally covered.

Sad songs? The list is ENDLESS....Ordinary Fool, Superstar, Rainy Days, Now, Goodbye to Love, Rode Ode, Where Do I Go From Here? Those are ONLY a few of them. Karen sang so many sad, melancholy songs. But, she did them SO well.......

"Solitare" is a very sad song. That would would get my vote. It is sad, but absolutely magnificant. This song was yet another that I heard from my parents collection of 45's. I fell in love with it upon first listen.
"A Song For You" also really has a way of making me sad. The part where Karen sings: "And when my life is over....remember when were together.....we were alone and I was singin' this song for you" jerks at my heart strings because I think of how her life was over much too soon. I miss Karen so much.
"Cresent Noon" has a very sad musical tone, and Karen does a great job of reflecting this low, sad tone in her voice.
"Now" is a song that particularly bothers my mother. She remembers hearing this song in the car when it first came out, and she thought that it sounded as if Karen was saying goodbye in the song. Of course, Karen passed away shortly after. Indeed, this song makes me sad as well.

Goodbye To Love most certainly. I've always thought Eve was a dark and sad song. But probably my favorite of the sad songs is Solitaire, that one just really hits home. For so many years I was a loner. Solitaire was my game.

I have a friend who is divorced and her ex lives a very lonely life and whenever she hears the song "Solitaire" she thinks it is so much of him. Personally, I think "Goodbye to Love" is. You know you're low when you are saying "no one ever cared if I should live or die". Oddly enough though, it has always been a favorite of mine. Beaner
