Bouncing around the net today,I found an interesting tidbit on another forum about a long rumored legend about Karen's almost connection to one of my favorite movies...here's the quote "It has been said that either Karen Carpenter (The Carpenters) or Toni Tennille (Captain and Tennille) were originally considered to perform the vocal [to the love theme "Can You Read My Mind" from SUPERMAN], but there is no existing proof that either one actually did it."
Here's a link: www.youtube.com/watch?v=nydABYGxzbE Now,as a fan of Superman and Karen...It blows my mind that Karen may have almost had a direct connection to the film that made me believe "a man can fly". John Williams score for that movie was one of the reasons I love the film so much, and I always thought that a Karen treatment to the lyrics (that Margot Kidder spoke in the film),married to Williams and the London Symphony Orchestra would have been epic.It has been said Karen had an interest in acting,in both musical and non musical roles. So,I had a crazy idea...a "What If" idea. What if Karen had auditioned for the role of Lois Lane for "Superman:The Movie",and got the part? I'm not sure she was even interested in such a role, and it was a pretty high profile way to jump into acting in a multimillion dollar budget blockbuster, but I think she could have done it.Aside from her physical resemblance to Margot Kidder at that time (although Karen was prettier by far),she would have done a pretty decent job portraying Lois, and I think she would have hit it off with Christopher Reeve and they might have had good chemistry. Now,that would have ment that some of Rich & Karen's projects (like "A KIND OF HUSH" and "PASSAGE" )might have been delayed or worked around as filming was around 1976 and 1977 with some reshots in 1978,(and they would have probably stopped touring completely.which i'm sure A&M would have NOT been happy with). Also,Karen's anorexia would have been problematic for the film makers as her weight seemed to have been in flux, going from healthy to incredibly thin and back again, not to mention the toll it took on her physically. However, taking it all into account,it might have been a great move for all involved. The movie would have still been a hit, allowing both Karen AND Richard a foot in the door of Hollywood.Karen would have probably been offered other roles,Richard would have probably been involved in a single version of "Can You Read My Mind?"for Karen, maybe opening opportunities to score films for Rich.Plus, the good publicity might have even increased sales of "Hush" and "Passage". "Can You Read my Mind" might have seen a return to the Top 10 for Karen and Rich, giving the Carpenters the momentum they sorely needed to go into the 80's strong. Who knows? It might have even started a chain of events of good fortune for Karen that would have made February 4th,1983 just another day. So,what do you guys think of my "What If?"Am I on to something,or all wet?
