It's interesting how we have such varied interpretations of what is going on based on a single moment in time. Since this candid picture was taken in a space that was not generally accessible to the public, the photographer must have been a close personal or professional contact or someone specially authorized to be in the room. I think that if Richard and Karen were really at odds with each other at the time, they would not have allowed pictures of this unflattering private moment to be captured for posterity, let alone be released to the public. The photographer would not have wanted to risk the consequences of breaching his or her trust and confidence with them. Therefore, it seems more likely to me that they were just deep in concentration about what they were listening to. Since there are reasonable alternatives to the interpretation of this photo, I hesitate to subscribe to the worst-case scenario without understanding the facts and contexts better. Like a Rorschach inkblot test, our interpretations may reflect more of who WE are than the actual subjects at a glance. Capturing a moment in time... Unflattering private moments have been captured and released before..ie. Karen and Richard at odds with each other in their A&M office in 1981. I think they were doing interviews about 'Made In America' then. Reasonable alternatives to the interpretation of the photo is what this is all about. ;-) We are just playing...using our observation skills and then making speculations about what might actually be happening. And, Yes, we do reveal a little of who we are when we make our speculations. That is the fun part, too. All of us are multi-faceted. We each see things differently...the same way people who witness an event will notice DIFFERENT aspects about the exact same event. Well said wisejester! I could not have said it better myself. Interpretations of photos are just good fun no harm is ever meant nor is anyone (I hope) being misleading or disrespectful of K&R or anyone else. The interpretations may be right or may be way off it really shouldn't matter accuracy is fine but alternate takes on this or any picture make these games FUN thats all that matters in the end as far as I am concerned.

This photo is considered a "rare" find....it was taken in the UK in the fall of 1971, and is considered a "British Stock" photo. Vary rare. Thanks to Chris "neverbeenalone" for that bit of information. I see "pensive" expressions on both faces....Rich looks so intense - to my mind, they MUST be listening to themselves, and though they may be enjoying what they're hearing, they're not going to crack a smile or discuss anything until the last note is played. Karen looking out the window gives me the distinct impression that she has much MORE on her mind than just this playback, though it is getting the attention it needs. She looks like she's very tired, and "expectant" somehow. I love how the mic is in the middle of the photo, splitting the two. Richard is so stoic and rigid - Karen, meanwhile, is sitting to the side with her legs crossed - appearing more comfortable (with everything - the sound, herself, her surroundings) while Rich seems to straight - look at the way he's sitting straight up for goodness sake! Karen looks as if she intends to be comfortable, no matter what the circumstances, if that's possible. Pensive....that's the word I'd use to describe the expressions.....pensive. Tim

Since I know more about this picture - such as it is not at their home - my interpretation of the picture has changed.
Here is my new interpretation:
I see the picture as being somewhat reflective and serious. K&R were in an office of some sort - possibly a recording studio. I don't see this as an angry or upset photo - I see this as a professional type thing. It looks like K&R were there for some sort of music business reason. Richard's listening to the music and someone else in the room has caught Karen's attention and is saying something to her - but not too loud as to not disturb Richard's intense listening.

More interesting takes. It does seem like the initial reason K&R are in the room is business related. I also note the microphone in front of them indicating an interview or recording of some sort being made and yes Karen does appear to be talking to someone off camera (or mostly off camera) rather than looking out the window as it appeared to me. Maybe an interview between songs or a meeting setting up the recording of a particular song (person off camera may be an interviewer or personel involved in making the records such as an engineer of some sort). I like these various takes on the picture it broadens my idea of whats going on in the photo and offers viable alternative. Lets see what other interpretations are out there some good stuff here!

It's interesting how once we found out a little more information on the picture (via Tim) our interpretations changed a bit.
