;DI really love this pic. of R. and K. It might be they are at an airport since it's crowded where they are. They truly look happy and well rested. They both appear to be looking at the same thing or people. My guess is that perhaps they have returned to home after a long tour, and they see their parents, and really glad to see them.

The Carpenters look nattily dressed in evening wear in this photo, Richard in a ruffled yellow shirt and black jacket (and possibly a black bow tie as he had once appeared at the Grammies) and Karen in a satiny red top with a purse strap over her right shoulder. The woman behind Richard is similarly elegantly dressed, further indicating this is likely a formal event. With wonderful smiles on their faces, they could be just exiting a show or an award ceremony, and are greeted by the paparazzi. The metal pipe scaffolding in the background looks like that used for a tent or umbrella in set-ups for passageways to some glamorous red carpet Hollywood after-parties.

It is evening/night. The night has just begun...not all the tent lights are on, yet. The Carpenters have just arrived at some sort of event/party. . . ('just arrived' because they are still real close together). R & K's hair looks recently styled...all hairs still in place, but it's early. Karen still has her purse...the shoulder strap sparkles. A glitzy affair. Both are dressed to the nines. Her shoulders are bare...so a warm evening. K & R both look happy to be there. A fun, relaxed evening must be in store for them. Huge smiles are worn by both. There is something going on just ahead of them that is very entertaining OR they see people they want to spend some time with. Richard's eyeing something/someone to his left. (Is that Randy Bash on Richard's left??) Karen's eyes are more straight forward. Perhaps they are being greeted by different people.

Karen and Richard have just arrived to a huge outdoor celebrity event. The paparazzi is not there, though choice members of the media have been invited. As K&R walk in a photographer takes their picture - though neither K&R see the photographer until after the picture is taken. K&R are looking at different people who are smiling at them as they walk into the party.
Karen is having a wonderful time and looks absolutely stunning. Richard is also dressed to the nines - but would rather be in the studio working - though he maintains a smile to keep up appearances.
There are several celebrities in attendance, including Vicki Lawrence who can be seen just beyond Richard's left shoulder.

:)Right on target folks! It was late and I was mostly sleepy when I posted what I did...but, even so, I think y'all are absolutely right. They both look so ready and dressed up for a very fine evening. ALSO RICK...love the current background pic with the record player.... But oh my ...OH MY...yes, I will happily AdMiT that I still have a record player and quite a few of those LP 's... BUT....alas it may have to go into the trash....it's an 80's style thing and I dusted it off some mon. ago and ever since the speakers and or volume and...Whatever...Does Not Work... Anyway...sorry I got off target...here..but the record player was and still is a very nice invention. Those records are so much a part of Me growing up ! >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>><<<<<<<<<<<<< ::)s

This is one of my favorite pictures. I think Karen is quite attractive in this one. I also like the silhouette look - reminds me of the pics with their logo.

Can anyone really make out who is on Richard's left? So far we've had 3 names floated out there...Randy Bash, Vicki Lawrence, and Olivia Newton-John.

I don't think it's Randy Bash either as she didn't come into Richard's life until 1974 and this pic is from 1973. I mentioned Vicki Lawrence because the person has a similar hair color and style to her.

I mentioned Vicki Lawrence because the person has a similar hair color and style to her. Back in the 1970's, Vicki Lawrence sometimes sported a similar hairstyle which was trendy at the time. However, the exact hue of hair color, direction of the flip of her hair and her eyes looked different enough from those of the person in the photo in question. Compare this photo with Vicki Lawrence's album cover for "Tne Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia" at: thursdays.com/pic200/lawnight.jpgThe person behind Richard could simply be a stranger just passing by.

I agree.. at best the person's hair color and style are just similar - and really not close enough to be Vicki Lawrence. Although for my interpretation of the picture (what I saw in my mind's eye) I commented that it was Vicki Lawrence - eventhough I knew in reality it wasn't Vicki Lawrence.
btw... I do happen to own that particular Vicki Lawrence album. It wasn't the greatest album ever released - but I surely love the hit "The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia" - what a great song.

I believe it is Maria Galeazzi as there's a similar photo in the Coleman book of Karen, David Alley, Richard and Maria at the premiere of Neil Diamond's "Johnathan Livingston Seagull" Oct 29, 1983
