It seems the connection could be Billy May. Billy May is the great arranger of the song " I Can Dream, Can't I" that Carpenters recorded on the Horizon Album. Billy provided the piano work for Sam Harris on his debut Album, and did some of the arrangements for him, as well.

Okay here I am with the connection...
Before I give the answer I had to go back and read the credits clearly to make sure I didn't miss anything as Tim had mentioned that Billy May provided the piano work for Sam Harris' debut album. I looked at the credits very close and Billy May is not mentioned once. Although Bobby Sondstrom, Robbie Buchanan and John Barnes are listed as playing all piano and keyboard parts. Out of curiousity Tim, where did you find this info about Billy May?
So, here it is... the connection is that Tony Peluso (Carpenters guitarist extraordinaire) along with Steve Barri produced Sam's debut album which includes the song "Over The Rainbow" and his top 40 hit "Sugar Don't Bite". Tony Peluso also played guitar on a few tracks. As if that's not enough Tony also Engineered the album.
Another minor connection is Maxine Willard Water and Julia Tillam Waters provided backup vocals for Sam. Both maxine and Julia did backup vocals on the Carpenters' "All You Get From Love Is A Love Song".
