A fun song, no doubt. It's one that I enjoy listening to but don't seek out to play. I enjoy it when I come across it. This one gets 4 stars from me. Tim

Five Stars
Another excellent pop tune. This is one of my favorites of all Carpenters singles. I usually include this one my homemade Carpenters compilations. I love the upbeat feel to it. And again Tony Peluso just shines. Best of all Karen is playing drums on this one.

I play this song often. I've loved it since the first time I heard it in 1974. I love all Carpenters songs but I like the upbeat songs the best. Karen had such a great voice for upbeat happy sounding songs like this one.

Rich got Karen to double track her entire lead vocal on this world-wide smash hit. Her younger, cleaner, more decisive edge is THE highlight of the song in my opinion. I especially love the section..."wait a minute, wait a minute ooh....come on deliver the lett-A, the sooner the bett-A ahhh". Pure pop heaven!
A couple of years ago I had the pleasure of meeting a former Marvellette! She informed me that she hadn't sung on the original recording 'Please Mister Postman', but she had sung it live a few times. For the Carpenters though, historically 'Postman' is extra-special because it marked their commercial peak. The promo-video filmed at Disneyland features a dazzling 24 year old Karen smiling and having fun. Gone was the pudding bowl hairstyle and granny dress. Here was a trendy, healthy, gorgeous young woman at the top of her game.
5 Stars. L

I recall when the Carpenters rendition of this song came out (I liked the group then but wasn't a big fan- seldom listened except when they were played on radio) that I thought it was just a little subpar compared to most of their other big hits. My view has sure changed now! The tone is very upbeat, as others have noted and as is the case with everything Carpenters did, it is so well orchestrated. Though I've probably heard the song 30 times in the past 18 months, I stilloften pick up things I haven't heard before. I would give this a solid "4."

I always wondered why she sings it that way "deliver the lett-A, the sooner the bett-A". I'd be very happy if you could explain it to a non-native speaker, like me. Is is it just for fun or is she imitating someone..
By the way, I really like the song: 4 stars

Interesting observations about the word pronounciations. Since I am from the east myself and accustomed to that type of dialect, I never even noticed it until you pointed it out.

Aha! Thank you for the interesting information, Rick! Like you Karen's pronunciation caught my attention from the first time I heard the song. It's my favourite part of the whole song. It sounds so cool. So, ps11932 you seem to have a very nice accent/dialect!

It's interesting, now that I think about it, that there are probably at least 5 or 6 different accents or pronounciation styles in the U.S.A. that are so distinct that people could often detect a person's region of origin jist by their speech. Are there different specch patterns characteristic of various parts of Germany (and other countries) as well?

It sounds so cool. So, ps11932 you seem to have a very nice accent/dialect! That's funny indeed! The whole song is great, the things you mentioned, but funnily enough: I'm always looking forward to those two words ! There are some other songs that make me appreciate Karen's pronunciation of some words, like "(Want you) Back in my life again" for instance. Not that obvious as PMP, but I love how she sings the words "heart", "start" and "part".. Sometimes it's about details and nuances.. Oh yes! There are various dialects and accents in German. I'm from the Ruhr Area (Western part of Germany) and went to Munich (Bavaria, Southern part) for an internship. The people in Munich had only a slight accent but when I talked to true, elder Bavarians it was very very hard for me to even understand them. I always thought I would speak without any accent, but during my internship everyone told me you can hear that I'm from the Ruhr Area. There are a few TV shows, Theater companies and clubs in all parts of Germany that try to preserve the respective dialects. Apart from PMP, can you detect an accent or maybe even dialect in Karen's and Richard's speaking? Is there anything special?
