No hesitation...5 stars...It's a great song and especially coming from Karen...whatever song came her way, she handled it, happy or sad...also a good song to fit in with Horizon as a whole. Several songs on Horizon have mention or have to do with the outdoors..."you were the dawn breaking the night" (from On. Yest.).. "As we view the earth's horizon bend, earth and sky seem to meet and end" (I'm almost positive those words are wrong somehow..sorry) and then "don't your feet get cold in the winter time....and the sun won't shine"
well, anyway, you get my drift I suppose...ha..

5 stars. I love this song. Eagle's version is good, but Karen's version is the best.

I think Karen's voice is warm and perfect in this reading of Desperado....I am always amazed by the way Karen seems to be able to have so much air to sing like that!.......... there's also such a lonely feel in this song...which can be so nice at times when someone is in kind of a sad mood.....Horizon is one of my favourit albums!!

Five Stars
What a remarkably beautiful song. This song truly contains that "chill factor". I feel this is one of Karen's finest vocals ever - deep, rich, pure, strong and soulful. Karen was truly at her vocal best when recording the fabulous album "Horizon".
We could make comparisons to the Eagles or Linda Ronstadt (even Bonnie Raitt or Kenny Rogers), but that is pointless because each is special in it's own way. The Carpenters' recording stands on it's own. The musicianship is intense - dark, intricate and soulful. The song is tender and smooth yet bold and edgy. Again we have an outstanding performance by guitarist Tony Peluso. Richard Carpenter was very smart in showcasing Peluso's work quite a bit on "Horizon".
I have alway felt that "Desperado" should have been released as a single it would have been a huge hit.

One of my favorites from Horizon. The harmonica is great. This is one of Karen's very best vocals ever.

"Desperado" is a handsome song both melodically and lyrically. The Eagles' orginal version is a mighty fine record, covered since '75 by many artists - surely testament to it's enduring appeal. Yet the Carpenters ability to simultaneously capture its unadorning beauty and towering splendour, has undoubtedly secured theirs as THE greatest recording.
If I had to choose my all-time favorite Karen vocal - this has to be it. For me it sums up everything she is - each one of her contradictions and complexities. Her voice - plaintive, knowing, warmly engaging. Wise beyond her years, yet intriguingly innocent. Possessed of a bleak desperation, yet somehow feminine and sunny. On the chorus she commands a youthful edge that would give today's Mariah's and Miss Aguilera's a run for their money! Seldom does any performance by ANY vocalist evoke such richness so unpretentiously. Without the usual cushion of backing vocals, Rich's chillingly simple country-tinged arrangement, complete with trademark close-miked tom fills, and mournful harmonica, allows Karen's voice to naturally bloom and shine before our very ears.
Recording a cover version of a song which had already been a big hit, and especially so SOON afterwards, clearly concerned Rich. But no wonder he changed his mind when he heard his sister sing it. If I'd written the song, I would have considered Karen's recording of it like a lifetime's worth of birthdays, Christmases, and non-work days coming in the space of 3 minutes 37 seconds!
Can I give it 100 stars Rick!? L

I also love the way she sings the "freedom... ah, freedom" to "you're a prisoner walking through this world all alone..." part...
Tommy Morgan's harmonica at the beginning and the end gives the song an additional wistfulness that really tugs at the heart... This song really SHOULD have been released as a single...

Freedom ah freedom, that's just some people talkin', you're a prisoner walking, through this world all alone.Don't you draw the queen of diamonds boy, she'll beat you if she's able. No the queen of hearts is always your best bet. Now it seems to me some fine things has been laid upon your table, but you only want the one that you can't get.Just these 2 verses and the power in which she emphasises them alone makes this song the best version for me. She Sings with complete sincerity. There's only a handful of songs which I can identify fully with and this is one of them, as like an angel she sings it to beautiful perfection
