Five Stars
Absolutely one of the Carpenters' finest finest recordings all the way around. It has a dark and mysterious mood about. Karen sings this one to perfection. Outstanding!

As many of you already know, this is my favorite of all Carpenter songs. A beautiful ballad written by the incredibly talented Leon Russell, this dark moody piece does, indeed, fit Karen Carpenter's basement voice to a tee. A brilliant read by a brilliant artist. Of course, Richard's arrangement of this classic tune is perfect for Karen's vocal, and lucious in all the right places, though certainly these areas are few, and so tastefully inserted. In fact, I believe it safe to say that This Masquerade's simplicity is actually one of it's highlights. I would agree that lyrically, the song matches the life of Karen in many ways, and I found its use in The Karen Carpenter Story in the perfect place - as she was still making music following a grueling schedule, while being married to Tom Burris, who was NOT getting any quality time with her, as she was wasted after giving her all to her work. A sad state of affairs, but it showed us the devotion Karen had to her career, and sadly, the state of affairs regarding her marriage to Tom. This piece is full of drama, mystery and intrigue, and it all comes across so beautifully as sung by a talented Karen Carpenter. Definitely the highest possible rating - 5 stars. Tim

Deffinetly one of the finest recordings by the Carpenters. It has a smoky jazz feel and the lyrics apply to so many relationships. Richard was a genius when it came to choosing lyrics as well as melody Jim

I do not like "This Masquerade" very much, and I feel somewhat baffled as to why this is. It just lacks a little inexplicable 'something' for me - which is weird considering that it has all the fine ingredients of a Carpenters classic. When I was introduced to the Carpenters, I felt it was boring in comparison to what I'd heard up to that point and undeservedley included on Greatest Hits albums. Maybe I've never really got over that. Contraversial I know, considering that the vast majority of fans consider this an ultimate favorite. Don't hate me!
3 Stars. L
