Ticket To Ride was totally rearranged by Richard from the uptempo creation of Lennon/McCartney. The result is a resplendent Karen infusing each word with the passion of despair in love lost. The arrangement and vocals are seamless and I never tire of listening to this great song.

Fraid I dont Like the Beatles & I much preferred the remixed (singles 69-73 album ) version than this. This tho made a long stay as a very 1st single release in the billboard charts at 54 so it must have been really good in some peoples minds. It had a very 60s feel to it which Im not a great fan of. 1 Star

3-stars
I love the Carpenters and I love the Beatles. But "Ticket To Ride" is not a favorite for me by either group. It's a good song though and Karen really does an excellent job with it. But like "Someday" there are parts where Karen's vocal is less than perfect. Fortunately Carpenters did rerecord this song in 1973 and I think Karen's new vocal is far superior to her 1969 vocal which is what we find on the "Ticket To Ride / Offering" album.
What I do find outstanding about the 1969 recording is Richard's keyboard work and the strings arrangement. This song was really a great tune in 1969 and it did capture the attention of many people in the music industry. With this song Carpenters certainly made an impression even though it was not a mega-hit.

I really like this version. When the second verse at the beginning rolls around, Karen really sounds out in it and it appealed to me very much.

I pretty much agree with the latter part of Rick's review on this song, which I have excerpted above. In addition, I think R deserves a lot more credit for having the vision and ability to transform the Beatles' boisterous, light-fluff version of this song into a more melodious and reflective ballad. I simply enjoy R's rich, brooding orchestration on this one. However, K's lead vocals sound forced, strained and a bit off-key in this original version of "Ticket to Ride" (even more so than "Someday" on this CD/album). Perhaps first-time jitters in the recording studio? Taking these opposing factors into account, I give a rating of 3 stars for this version. (The superb, much-improved later version on the "Singles" CD/album truly deserves 5 stars!)

I agree with previous comments regarding Karen's lead vocal on the "Offering" version of this track. I've just listened to it for the first time in years, and I know it sounds harsh but I think this is Karen's poorest recorded vocal performance. I'm suprised that Rich or Karen settled for this lead vocal considering that Karen was (by this stage) recording some top-class vocals on the majority of their recordings (even the home demos). I wonder whether there were time constraints or deadlines in the studio, or other such factors which forced the Carpenters to settle for a sub-standard vocal? I can well understand why Karen wanted to re-record this in '73, AND why she did such an amazing job on the new vocal (she had a point to prove!). That aside, I like the arrangement on this track (prefer it to The Beatles) and Rich clearly had fun indulging himself in that lengthy piano-intro! 3 Stars. L

I'm listening to this song as I type, because of reading everyone's posts up to now. Interesting thoughts about Karen's vocal on this one....This one definitely took me by surprise the first time I heard it - especially considering that I'd heard the Beatles do it for so many years before this. I would have to agree that this is not THE most special reading of a song for Karen, but I truly don't see as much wrong with what Karen did with it, as I do in the mix - vocally, on the "He's Got a Ticket To Ride" and a couple of other places, it seems to me that Rich is too high up in the mix - his tenor notes overpower Karen. Maybe this was done as an attempt to "cover" something Karen and Rich didn't like from the main vocal, but I doubt it. It just screams "I hear Richard" and normally, the harmonies are so tight that doesn't happen. Otherwise, I think Karen does a great job with this song, and I like the arrangement - much more now, though, than I did at first. Guess I know what to expect now when I didn't used to. I gave it 4 stars. Tim

I like this one. It is one of their earlier songs. And, what Richard did with it is crazy!
Richard took an uptempo song, which actually had rather sad lyrics and turned it into something hauntingly beautiful. I guess I am in the minority, because I like both of Karen's "takes" on this song. The ending alone, you know, where she sings: "..think I'm gonna be sad..."
I feel that, historically, this song showcases her lower register rather well. And, that her vocal is a precursor of grand things to come.

Seeing today's update, I'm actually reading these reviews for the first time (new material sure helps stimulate interest), and find myself in hearty agreement especially, with the first and last posts. I have always felt that the C's interpretation of this number was beautiful and on target with feeling of loss and separation. (The Beatles upbeat version gives the feeling of "the girl... is going away"..., well, good riddance.) And I think this was the first Carpenters song to place on the charts. Overall, this isn't a favorite or a great song by Carpenter standards but I still give it a "4".

:DI wasn't aware that I didn't comment or give a review of this at the time, but I just watched the video tape of Remembering the Carps. and altogether, I give the song 4 stars. Perhaps, technically in comparison to other ventures, or versions, not Karen's best, but I don't have a very technical ear I guess. IN ANY CASE, DOES ANYONE HAPPEN TO KNOW WHERE THEY WERE , WHAT LOCATION was used for this early video...or what background pictures were used ....It looks like they are in the Rockies, but anyway... I've always thought that video seemed a bit odd for Ticket to Ride... but perhaps they were there during a Christmas or something. It sure is a beautiful setting though. Guess I'm ready for cooler weather.

The fabulous "Ticket To Ride" video was filmed in Squaw Valley, California which is in the Lake Tahoe area. The same area which they took the album cover pictures for the repackaged "Ticket To Ride" album cover... you know that neat boat picture. Since Karen and Richard were (are) residents of Southern California (well now Richard is in Central California) most of their videos were filmed in various parts of our beautiful California (and in the 70's California was even more beautiful than it is now). Other locations for videos include... "Please Mr. Postman" - in Anaheim, California at the famed Disneyland... I only live about eight miles from there... "Only Yesterday"... like the song this is my favorite video was filmed at Huntington Gardens in Pasadena, California. "Those Good Old Dreams" in Hollywood... with some scenes at A&M Records.

Thank you Rick for the info. As I've stated before, I was 8 yrs. old when my family and I drove for 2 days to California, the naval base at S. Diego where my sister was. I do know about Squaw Valley, by chance also, cuz my brother and a friend went there after their hi school graduation. They learned to ice skate there, and then went on to S. Fransisco just for the fun of it. I still have a Squaw Valley pin he brought me from there. It was a gorgeous place from what he said. ....And clearly it is. Must be nice to go to a beach. Yes, those Pasadena Gardens are beautiful in the Only Yest. vid. California has much to offer to anyone.
