I gave it a 2. I think I actually like Benediction better.

I gave this one three stars. Like Rick, I love the a capella harmonies, and of course, they're right on pitch, and blend with the ease of an entire choir singing. The only thing that bothers me about this song is that I felt Karen's high range wasn't "captured", if you will, as well as it was when she used it in other songs. On the word "peace" where there is a very dissonant chord that passes into a resolve, though it's sung right- on, but because it's that higher Karen voice, sometimes it just sounds as though someone was asking her to sing not using that strong, real true Karen Carpenter voice we all know and fell in love with. I think, had Karen been truly singing in "her" voice, the piece would have been a lot prettier than it turned out to be, though I have always enjoyed listening to it.

I concur with YesterdayOnceMore about the rating of 3 and the dissonant chord on "peace." Although I understand the ambitiousness of this acappella piece and the album concept bookending with "Benediction," it is just "OK" with me.

Hey guys. It's hard to judge such a short song on it's own merit when taken out of context of the album. But I think "Invocation" is pretty enough for an album opening, so I give it 3 stars. Karen is clearly singing the higher harmony in her falsetto "head" voice rather than her upper chest tone voice (which she used more commonly); it was probably deliberate to give it a more choral, secular feel. Having said that, the moment I love is when Karen slides (in a very pop-like way) into the word "whose" in the first line.

Power Sureness Blending/Meshing of vocals +more all make this introduction to the C's very noticable and attention grabbing. You knew the talent was there...and after Invocation you just waited for the unfolding of a sumptious feast to commence!
