If it's been a while since you've read Part 17, it may help to go back and read the last few paragraphs as a refresher as to where we left off last.
This chapter deals with several controversial topics.
FRIDAY OCTOBER 19, 1979
Karen stood there shaking with fear while the apartment manager spoke with the police on the phone. "What is your name ma'am? The police want to know," he asked. Karen was shaking uncontrollably and could not respond to the man's question.
"Do you know who you are?" the man asked kindly.
Karen began crying as she softly and nervously said, "I need help. Please!"
"She won't tell me her name. I think she's in shock," he told the police.
After he hung up with the police he took a blanket over to Karen and draped it across her shoulders. She quickly wrapped her shivering body with it and this helped to calm Karen down.
"You can sit down over here ma'am," the manager directed her to a small sofa in the office.
"Thank you," Karen said as she sat down.
The man looked at her and said, "You look familiar. I've seen you around here before, haven't I?" the man asked.
"No," Karen answered, "I've never been here before."
"Oh, I remember you," he said in a wry voice, "I've seen you sleeping alongside the empty donut shop across the street. That was a month ago. I manage that property also."
"No, that wasn't me," Karen said, "I need help, why are you doing this to me?"
"Oh, yes you remember," he continued talking, "I woke you up and told you to leave."
"No, no," Karen said, "You've got me confused with someone else. I'm Karen Carpenter the singer."
"Oh yeah lady and I'm Wayne Newton," he said sarcastically, "You don't even look like her. I saw her on T. V. the other day. She's a good looking lady unlike you. And what would Karen Carpenter be doing in these parts anyway?"
Karen began sobbing with disbelief.
Right at that moment the police entered the manager's office. There were two police officers. One who looked to be in his late twenties named Officer McConnell and the other middle aged named Officer Carlen.
The manager spoke to the police before Karen could say anything.
"I think she's in shock," he said, "She thinks she's Karen Carpenter. but, I've seen her before, she's a nasty vagrant."
"Sir, we will determine that," Office McConnell answered.
McConnell walked toward Karen and spoke to her, "Hello ma'am, I'm Officer McConnell. I just need to know if you are injured in any way?"
"Other than the scrapes and bruises, no I am not," Karen answered lucidly. Karen remained quiet and let the police do the talking.
"We're going to have to investigate the apartment to find out what has happened," Officer Carlen said, "Another squad car will arrive in a few minute. They'll take both your statements. We also have an ambulance coming to take you to the medical examiner," Carlen said to Karen.
"Is the guy who did this still in the apartment? Is he alive?" McConnell asked Karen.
"he's still alive," Karen said, "But he's not in the apartment. He left for food and said he'd be back in about 45 minutes."
"How long has he been gone?" McConnell asked.
"I would guess about a half hour by now," Karen answered.
The police asked the manager for the keys to the apartment and left to do their investigation.
Karen, who was calm by now, continued to wait on the sofa knowing that soon they would discover that she is Karen Carpenter. Outside she could see a little girl with dark hair and bangs staring inside the window to see what was happening in the manager's office. The police asked the girls mother to take her inside while they do their investigation.
They entered the apartment and looked around to make sure that Bill was still gone. Next, they closed the front door and locked it so Bill would think Karen was still in there and walk right into their trap.
On the floor near a lamp they found a small green purse. They opened the purse and found Karen's driver's license and other effects inside. They immediately walkie-talkied the back-up police (who were now in the manager's office with Karen) to confirm that the victim is Karen Carpenter. With this discovery the apartment manager made a face of surprise and apologized to Karen for his accusations.
Karen continued to give her statement to the police while McConnell and Carlen forged ahead with their investigation in the apartment. A few minutes later McConnell and Carlen heard the cylinder of the dead-block lock turn and Bill entered the apartment holding two brown paper bags. Upon his entrance McConnell and Carlen quickly apprehended Bill and handcuffed him. They read him his rights and told him he was being arrested for kidnapping and aggravated assault.
Carlen checked the paper bags Bill carried in and found three exacto knives of various sizes, a pair of large scissors, an extremely sharp carving knife, two boxes of large Hefty trash bags and more duct tape.
"What were you planning on doing with these things?" McConnell asked in a barking manner.
"Nothing, I was going to do some gardening," Bill answered.
"With exacto knives and a carving knife?" Carlen said.
"It was that baby," Bill grievously spoke, "That baby ruined everything. She was supposed to be mine."
McConnell jerked on the handcuffs which made them tighten around Bill's wrists, then lead him out of the apartment to the squad car and drove him to jail.
Back in the manager's office Karen finished giving her statement and was already on her way to the hospital.
At the hospital Karen was examined and it was determined that both she and the baby were unharmed.
Richard had been waiting for Karen when they released her from the hospital. He gave her a big hug and asked her if she was alright.
Karen was concerned about her car being left in front of Coco's Restaurant. Richard ensured her that he would get her car back home to her.
Richard drove Karen to mom and dad's house where Karen would stay as to not be alone during this ordeal.
Mom and dad both had grief stricken expressions on their faces when Karen entered the house.
Mom ran toward Karen asking as she sobbed, "How's my baby? Did he hurt you?" she hugged Karen tightly as if to never let go.
It was now 10:45 p.m. and Karen was exhausted so she walked upstairs to take a shower and go to bed.
TUESDAY OCTOBER 23, 1979
This week's chart positions:
"Love Makin' Love To You" in it's eighth week on the chart is now in it's third week at #1 and is in it's fourth week at #1 on the Adult Contemporary Chart.
"Karen Carpenter" (the album) spends a second week at #1 on the album chart racking up a total of 11 weeks on the chart.
"The Singles 1969-1973" moves up to #141 up 23 spots from #164 the previous week. Now in it's fifth week after re-entry with a cumulative total of 110 weeks on the Top 200.
By now Karen's abduction was in every newspaper, gossip magazine, news show and so forth. Exactly what she wanted to avoid was now happening. A complete media frenzy was in full swing and Karen just did not have the energy or desire to deal with it, so she remained in seclusion.
Still at mom and dad's house Karen received a visit from Police Detective Brett Hansen. He told Karen that there is a possibility that herb Alpert may be behind her abduction. There is evidence that Alpert paid Bill Carlie's brother $75,000 to have her abducted and killed. Detectives said that Alpert is nowhere to be found, but they are investigating this lead right now.
Karen found this hard to believe as she and Herb have always had an exceptional friendship and working relationship.
"Well Karen," Hanson said, "We're investigating this. Nothing is confirmed yet we still haven't been able to speak with Alpert. Is there any reason why he'd want to hurt you?"
"None that I can think of," Karen answered. "This is just all to unbelievable. It doesn't make any sense. Herb is like a big brother to me."
Scratching his head Hanson asks, "Have you met Bill Carlie's brother Jim before?"
"I met Bill at a party in march," Karen answered, "he said he worked for Capitol Records".
"yes," Hanson said, "He told us that also. Bill has never worked for Capitol Records. He works for a catering company. The same company that catered the party you met him at in Malibu earlier this year."
"Really?" Karen shrugged with discomfort.
"Yes," Hanson continued speaking, Carlie's brother Jim owns the catering company which has five branches throughout Southern California. Bill Carlie claims Herb Alpert paid his brother $75,000 to kill you. Jim paid Bill $40,000 to do the job. But as I say none of this is confirmed. We do have confirmation of the $75,000 being transferred to Jim Carlie's account from Herb Alpert and $40,000 to Bill from Jim. Other than that we don't have any more information. We'll have more certainty in the next few days."
FRIDAY OCTOBER 26, 1979
Today Karen's attorney, Rodger Peden, met with Bill Carlie and his lawyer. The case is due to start in the two weeks the outlook for Carlie is bleak. He does not have a chance of getting away with this. He will be going to jail. All the evidence is in place. Peden is here to put an offer on the table.
"Okay Carlie," Peden said, "this is the deal, we have more incriminating information. We checked further into your Herb Alpert story and guess what we found out. Herb Alpert has nothing to do with this. your story doesn't fly. Alpert purchased two original sculptures from your brother totaling $75,000. Shortly after that your brother paid you $40,000 which your share of an $80,000 inheritance left to you and your brother after your great aunt Jean Thornton passed away. You haven't been straight with us Carlie.
Bill sat there stunned and motionless.
"This is all hard fact Carlie," Peden continued speaking, the way I see it you go to trial, you lose, you spend forty years in San Quentin.
Bill's attorney, Randall Sharp, took him across the room to go over the reality of what's happening.
"take a look at what they have Bill," Sharp spoke, "There's a lot of evidence. and we're talking Karen Carpenter. If it were anybody else it might not be as tough. Karen Carpenter is a well loved person. She's highly respected in the public eye. Bill, there really isn't an easy way out of this for you. Herb Alpert is going to be a witness against your character - we're talking powerful people Bill."
""What do you suggest?" Bill asked in a quivering voice.
"I say you take their deal. It'll be considerably less time than if you go to trial. I'll work on negotiating them down."
"Okay," Bill begrudgingly says with a sigh, "Let's do it."
Sharp and Carlie took their places back at the conference table as Sharp spoke, "What's your deal Peden?"
"This is it Carlie," Peden glared directly into Bill's eyes as he sternly spoke, "We have a load of evidence against. it is all compiled properly and admitted into trial. We can use all this evidence. We have several powerful people including your brother who are testifying against you. it does not look good for you. We're looking at abduction and aggravated assault with intent to kill. We're offering 30 years with possibility of parole in 20. You go to trial it's 40 years with possible parole in 30 years. It's your choice."
Sharp spoke up," The thing here is Karen is alive and unharmed. We want 20 years with possible parole in 15."
"Not at all," Peden yelled out, "The only reason Karen is alive is because she was able to escape. If not for that Karen would have been killed by Bill Carlie that day. Karen and her unborn baby. And why because Bill Carlie felt betrayed. This doesn't fly Carlie."
Sharp looked over at Carlie and raised his eyebrows in question.
Carlie sat quietly for about a minute then reluctantly nodded his head "yes".
"Smart move Carlie," Peden said, "you'll be a middle aged man when you get out of jail."
Later in the day Karen felt relieved to hear Bill Carlie was in jail and wouldn't get out for at least 20 years. She was relieved that this did not turn into a huge court case. That's the last thing she wanted. The paparazzi is already going crazy over all this as it is.
TUESDAY OCTOBER 30, 1979
"Love Makin' Love To You" remains at #1 for it's fourth consecutive week, with a total of nine weeks on the chart. The song is also in it's fifth week at the top of the Adult Contemporary chart.

THURSDAY NOVEMBER 1, 1979
Although it's been near two weeks since the abduction Karen is still quite shaken and hasn't been able to sleep properly. Eventhough she knows he's in jail she still has this dark fear looming over her.
Olivia Newton-John called Karen last night to make plans for lunch in L. A. but Karen made up an excuse to get out of it. Karen hasn't left the parent's house since she got there on October 19th.
At breakfast mom, dad and Karen sat on the patio, as it was a beautiful sunny morning. Rosina Sullivan (one of the newest members of the Carpenters' personal staff) cooked a beautiful meal consisting of a three cheese, avocado and spinach omelet and hash brown potatoes. Rosina is known for excellent omelets.
As the three were eating mom voiced her concern.
"Karen," mom said, "How about we take a drive to the Beverly Canter today? I saw a cute purse I thought would go great with your green jacket."
"No, no mom," Karen responded, "I have other plans for the day?'
"What Karen," mom said, "Another day cooped up in your room. It is such a beautiful day. You need to get out."
" I have some phone calls to make," Karen answered.
"Phone calls?" mom retorts, "It doesn't take all day to make a few phone calls. I know that Olivia called last night. I spoke with her earlier in the day. Why didn't go out with her?"
"That's none of your business mom," Karen blurted as she broke into tears. She threw down her fork and ran inside and upstairs to her room and slammed the door shut.
"Agnes, Agnes, my dear love," Dad says with understanding and compassion, "I love you so very much Aggie. But please you try and understand what Karen has been through. Please be patient with her. It's going to take sometime for her to get over this."
"You're right Harold," Mom said as she sniffled trying to hold her tears back, "Talk to her Harold, you understand her better than I do. Please tell her I'm sorry."
"Yes, Aggie, yes I will," Dad said as he got up to go talk with Karen.
Dad caught his breath as he stood in front of Karen's bedroom door. As he knocked on her door lightly he calmly said, "Sweety, it's your dad."
In a muffled and faint voice Karen said, "Come in daddy."
Dad walked into Karen's room and sat on the edge of her bed. She was lying there underneath a thick patchwork quilt.
"It'll be all right Karrie," Dad said in a comforting manner, "You know your mom loves you. She just doesn't know how to say it."
"I know daddy," Karen said between her tears, "It just hurts. It all hurts, everything. I'm afraid. I'm afraid of everything and everyone. I can't handle this."
Dad, while holding Karen's hand give her a warm fatherly smile as Karen sits up and continues talking.
"I mean a few nights ago I was watching TV," Karen spoke slowly, "And I saw a man on a commercial who reminded me of Bill Carlie. All of a sudden I became chilled and started shaking. I was so scared."
"Karen honey," Dad said, "Why didn't you get me? I'm always here for you."
"I know you are daddy," Karen said, "But, it's like I was paralyzed. I was frozen in fear. All I could see was the shadows on my bedroom wall getting bigger and bigger and everything seemed to close in on me."
"Karen," Dad said, "You don't need to go through this alone. You have a strong support system in your family and friends. Frenda has been very concerned about you. She's been calling every other day. You should get on the phone and call her."
"You're right Dad," Karen says, "Frenda is so sweet and I don't know why I've been this way with my friends. I guess I'm afraid. It's like something in me is broken."
"I know you don't want to hear this Karen," Dad says, "But, I was looking at the newspaper a few days ago and read about this facility in L.A. which Connie Francis made a large donation to recently."
Karen cuts in right away, "Dad! Connie Francis was raped. I wasn't raped."
"I know, I know sweetheart," Dad consoled her.
"Oh, I'm sorry dad," Dad Karen said, "Please tell me about this place."
Dad continues talking, "It's a place for well known women like politicians, celebrities, the wealthy. It's for women who have been victims of violent crimes. Helen Reddy has done quite a bit of work with them."
"Oh yes," karen nodded in acceptance, "I remember seeing Helen on the Merv Griffin Show last year. She mentioned the clinic and the good work being done there."
Dad looks at Karen and raised his eyebrows at her as to make a plea.
"Okay, okay dad," Karen said, "I'll look into it."
"There's a group meeting tomorrow night," Dad spoke, "Loretta Swit is giving a presentation."
"Hmmm..." Karen said, "Tomorrow night. That's too quick."
"It's up to you Karen," Dad said.
"Oh dad, oh daddy," Karen said, "All I want to do is wallow in my room and never deal with this. I want to hide from the pain. But, I can't do that. Soon Richard is going to want to go back into the studio, and what I am going to do run and hide? Okay, I'll go tomorrow night."
