BEFORE READING PLEASE REMEMBER THIS STORY IS 100% FICTION AND NONE OF THIS EVER HAPPENED. THIS IS ONLY A STORY.
Back home in Century City, Karen is sitting at her vanity applying the finishing touches of her eye shadow. After she's finished she looks at herself in the mirror and blows a kiss at her image. Karen walks into the kitchen and grabs a bagel and spreads some cream cheese on it with a sXXXXX. She wraps the bagel in a paper towel and tucks it into her purse which is hanging on her shoulder.
Karen leaves her condo with the current billboard magazine in her hand as she walks toward her car. Within minutes she's on the freeway toward Downey to give her mom and dad a surprise visit.
When she reaches their house she finds Ev in the kitchen brewing a pot of fresh coffee.
"Karen," Ev says surprised as she walks toward Karen with a hug. "What a nice surprise. How was your visit to New York?"
"Oh Ev it went great, Karen responds as she sits at the table pulling out her bagel, "Phil Ramone and I really hit it off. Ummm, that coffee smells good."
"I can take a hint Karen, Ev comments, "The coffee should be done in less then five minutes."
"You're great Ev", Karen smiles and continues speaking, "Where's mom and dad?"
"Your dad is next door visiting with the neighbors and mom is upstairs. She should be down any minute."
Ev sets a cup of black coffee in front of Karen, "There you go dear, enjoy."
At that moment Mom Carpenter walks into the kitchen and takes a seat at the table across from Karen.
"Oh Karen what a surprise," mom Carpenter comments, "you should have called first. You know how I don't like unexpected visitors."
"Mom, I'm your daughter, not a guest," Karen says.
"Yes, that's right," mom Carpenters remarks. "How did things go in New York?"
"Great mom," Karen happily exclaims. "I really like Phil. He's a great guy."
"Karen, I was thinking again," Mom says, "That maybe you should just give up the idea of this solo album and take a nice long vacation. You just finished working on that beautiful Christmas album. You've been going non stop now for about ten years. It's time for a break."
"Mom," Karen quickly snaps back, "We've been over this before. My mind is already made up. I am making this album and I'm making it with Phil."
"And that's another thing Karen," Mom Carpenter speaks authoritatively, "Who is this Phil. How do you know if you can trust him. He's just not Richard. We need to be careful about letting anybody else into our Carpenter circle."
"Mom please!" Karen shakes her head in anger, "Let's just drop it. This is my project. Not yours, not Richard's, but mine."
At this point Mom Carpenter motions her index finger at Ev and Ev leaves the kitchen.
"Karen you're the daughter. I'm the mother and I know what's best for you."
Karen now fuming gets up and walks toward the door to leave. "Mom, I'm your daughter. I'm 29 years old. I have a career. I have my own home. I am capable of making my own decisions."
Mom Carpenter gets up out of her chair and runs toward the door hollering out, "You better not leave young lady. Come back now!"
Mom Carpenter goes back inside and calls out with tears in her eyes, "Ev, come here. I need you Ev. She's blown up at me again. I just don't know what's wrong with her."
Ev walks back into the kitchen where Mom Carpenter is crying and walks toward her with a big sisterly hug. "Oh Mrs. Carpenter", Ev says in a comforting voice, "It will be all right. Don't cry Mrs. Carpenter."
