Karen is lounging back on a comfy plush sofa in her condo on Avenue Of The Stars. She's barefoot wearing a baggy t-shirt and sweat pants. She's talking with her mom on the phone.
"Yeah mom I'm flying to New York tomorrow to meet with Phil Ramone."
"Are you sure you should do this solo album, Karen?"
"Mom, I'm going to do this", Karen answers sternly.
"What if it's a flop? Are you sure you can handle this without Richard?"
"Mom, it's not about whether it will be a flop or a hit." Karen says, "It's about being independent. It's about discovering my own voice. It's about growing and trying something new."
"Well Karen," Agnes scolds, "I think you're making a big mistake. And I just can not support you in this."
"Well Agnes," Karen huffs back.
"What did you call me?" Agnes commands.
"I called you Agnes," Karen says in an angered voice. I simply do not care if you approve or not. I'm not making this album for you anyway. And no matter what you say it's still going to be done." So get over it mom."
There's a silence for a few seconds then Agnes responds.
"Don't speak to your mom that way."
"Don't speak to your daughter that way," Karen speaks back. Karen continues speaking softly, "Mom, I don't want to fight. I really don't. You know I love you mom. But I'm almost 29. I'm a full grown adult. I think it's time for me to make some decisions of my own. All my life it's been Richard's way or your way or the record company's way. Well now it's my way and I will see this to the end. And if I want mom I'm going to go to New York and I just might howl and scream like Janis Joplin. Or maybe I'll make a disco album and moan and groan like Donna Summer. Whatever nobody is going to intimidate me. I'm going forth with this.
"Karen," Agnes says, "I think this conversation needs to end."
Before Agnes can say another word Karen says, "No problem mom, goodbye," and she hangs up.
Karen sits there alone on her sofa. An episode of "Archie Bunker's Place" is on TV. She has a sniffle in her nose and a tear in her eyes. and she says to herself, "All I want is for her to just listen for once, that's all."
